  • changing differential fluid

The differential on my Miata (2002 Torsen Type II) is noisy (whine at constant speed or throttle off) and I'd like to change the fluid. Since it is a LSD I'm sure there is a specific fluid or type needed. Can anyone help with that.

I've always used Redline 75W-90 GL-5 oil. It takes 1 quart.

Also be sure to remove the fill plug before the drain plug. ;)

While you're under I'd check the PPF alignment. I see that causing a whine way more often than a diff. Check the u joints too while you are there.

Don't forget some NB2's had a Tochigi-Fuji differential with a higher failure rate for whatever reason. Don't know if it was the design, a bad batch, or what. I think the problem didn't crop up until 2003, but it's something to keep in mind if the noise doesn't clear up after a few attempts.
