  • Dyno tuning

I'm going to take Mike's recommendation and call Ed tomorrow from Balanced Performance to see if he can dyno tune my car tomorrow. I am hoping he has a window open.

    Questions:

    1. I am down a fan, and haven't received new ones in the mail yet (just ordered today, per Eric's recommendation) It shouldn't make a difference having a slight missing load (of the fan being on) that would effect the dyno tuning? (I am assuming no, but want to be cautious)

    2. What sort of PSI is safe, being that I have wiseco 9:1 forged pistons, crower forged rods, APR head and bottom end studs. Stock 99 head, 550cc rx7 injectors, PWR aluminum radiator, 2560 turbo (from the Flyin Miata FMII kit) whatever spark plugs FM recommends, 8.5mm spark wires. Fast Forward Superchargers fuel rail, Hydra ECU, 93 octane.

    That is all.

Firstly, did you get the engine built somewhere? I haven't seen a build thread on this thing, just curious.

You should be able to run prodigious boost. Crowers are some damn nice rods. The Wisecos are right up there with them. Nice bottom end.

Yeah- summarize the build. I think you built something capable of destroying (5spd) transmissions. You'll be ok on the dyno with one fan. I think your turbo will run out of steam around 330whp with your setup. If you've got a built bottom end, I say go for 300rwhp, which might be around 260-270ftlbs torque. I'm gonna guess that's no more than 20psi on that FM kit with the 2560. That should keep you happy long enough to find a six speed. :D Ed will set you up with a safe tune too.

with that setup I would run 15psi to 20psi.

Granted each turbo is different, you motor can easily handle 25+ psi.

Yeah, his motor can handle it. The transmission not so much. ;) But as long as he's not beating on the trans, it'll survive the power.

By the way, did you ever find out what was going on with the fans in the first place?
What time you heading to the dyno shop?

Not a bad price, but not the best either. Waiting patiently and watching the forums will usually get you one around $500. :D

but from what ive read how long does he really have to wait with 300hp?

Depends on how hard the car is driven. If he's burning out everytime he takes off, he's likely to grenade the transmission, but if he's smoothly delivering the power, it'll stand up to the torque output better. Remember, it's not the HP that matters, it's the torque.
Yeah, it'll probably break at some point, but there's quite a few people that have been using 5-speeds on the track, thrashing the crap out of the car, and have comparable power output and they haven't broken them yet on the other hand. It's one of those gambles. Fortunately for him, this isn't his only car, and if a 6-speed isn't readily available, he can snag a replacement 5-speed for cheap. There's people that just do that too.

not sure how old he is, but the likely hood is that it will be tested. i know i sure as hell would test it.

sorry for the wait, i was out. anyways... thanks for the compliments. the engine was purchased from someone who built it up last january, also when i had put it in. not ready to switch to a 6 speed yet, as I am still overcoming the price of this turbo right now, lol. I think i'll talk over my build with Ed, and see what he formulates to try to keep the 5 speed from grenading, and also to have a good amount of power. 14psi felt pretty wicked, and thats mostly on basemap, so I think a dyno tune will be excellent, and may bump the psi up a bit.

 That's the point of having all that power right? FWIW, I thrashed on mine every now and again and it didn't break. Wasn't quite at the 300 lb/ft mark, but still making enough to cause it to break if it wanted to. It's still in great shape, I'm actually going to sell it as soon as my car is running again, going to make sure the 6-speed is as it's supposed to be.

25, but I may thrash it a bit. i'll try to avoid clutch dropping though, as that just always sounds horrible stock, let alone with a lot of torque & horsies. burn outs mid gear though... that sounds a bit inticing hehehe.

It's the shock load that kills transmissions.

Ed will do a good job and usually has openings within a week or so of calling. I had the NGK plugs that FM recommends and I was getting spark blowout, so I switched plugs via Ed's recommendation and it stopped. I don't quite recall what plugs they are, but they carry them at Bal. Perf. iirc they were like 3033's.

soooo...how much more power can the 6 speed handle compared to the 5 speed.
MS2, VVT, 650cc, Spec S3, MMR, 6 speed, 4.30, AEM , ARP, ... one day ill get a real turbo
