FM 10 lb Flywheel is about $300 in 1.8 size (upgrade from 1.6 size)
Fidanza 8 lbs should be around $300 ish too. I would go for a 1.8 fly.
Cant go wrong with an ACT clutch. Likely about $400-450 in 1.8 size.
I wouldnt do the puck type clutch disc if it were me though.
    Stick with a street disc.

Yes! Bolts up perfectly. Is a common upgrade.
It allows for more clutch surface without the intensely stiff pedal
that can come from an hardcore 1.6 clutch too.

FWIW, theres not much (if any) difference in a 93 1.6 tranny and a 94 1.8 trans.
The clutch and fly are the primary difference.

The prices Kurt posted are right on. You may find them cheaper other places that are having deals and whatnot. Places like BEGi and FM offer deals on the whole package, I'm sure there are other places that do as well. Check GoMiata, 949Racing, etc. that deal primarily in Miata parts. Places like MiataMania/Moss Motors is a little overpriced from what I've compared. If $800 is your budget for it, you should be able to come under that with a little footwork.

            Yes. :)
FM "Happy Meal" w/10lb fly is $699 for everything.

Same products from BEGI are the same price.

But, if you want even a lighter fly you could get the Fidanza 8 lb and pair it up with the ACT clutch for 94-05 available here for $388

            http://www.gomiata.com/actclutkitst2.html

...and end up at about the same total $$

Alright my turn to ask a newb question.

If the 1.6 clutch holds up to more abuse than I can throw at it, wouldn't installing a clutch with more surface area (physically larger?) be a bit of a detriment? I mean that's more rotating mass. Wonder if that has anything to do with the 1.6 feeling snappier than the 1.8. I've never seen a 1.6 and 1.8 clutch assembly side by side. Set me straight? :wtf:

Thats at least half true. :D
Obviously if you add weight...youre adding more rotating mass...and that could possibly be negative if youre goal is to lessen mass.
However, with a light 1.8 flywheel, the weight is pretty much the same, and if even slightly more the benefit of a better clutch would outweigh it. An 8 lb fly is an 8lb fly right?? :D

In stock form 1.6 clutches are fine. If you go with an hardcore 1.6 clutch they can be stiff as hell...when compared to a 1.8 clutch that holds the same (or better) torque....and 1.8 clutches hold more torque when compared apples to apples with 1.6 clutches.

My turbo build will utilize an FM 10 lb steel 1.8 flywheel, and an ACT clutch. If I used exactly the same clutch for a 1.6 fly it probably wouldnt be enough clutch for the torque my setup could make.

                  Ahh, now it makes sense.

Next question: Advantage of steel fly. over alum.? :P

None really. Stock flywheels are steel. Lightweights are aluminum with a steel friction plate. Steel will control heat better, but if you can drive a manual properly, heat should not be a concern.

Oh, I thought when he mentioned the FM's 10lb. steel piece that the body of it was steel rather than aluminum, not just the friction surface.

I had an 8lb Fidanza on my previous Miata and it was great aside from the loud as hell chatter that it made. Would have really liked to have something lighter.

Hmm...other then maybe being able to use stock fasteners I am not sure I can answer that fully.
Obviously the aluminum flywheels are lighter. I have heard of a few cracking.
Havent heard the same of the lightened steel versions.

Oops, I'm sorry. I keep forgetting FM dropped Fidanza wheels and went to the lightened steel wheels. :wtf: I have the old purple FM flywheel. :)
