Default MX5Atlanta.com FM/Hard Dog Roll Bar Group Buy

Here's the deal, prices on all Hard Dog roll bars are going up 10% on August 1st, at the same time, shipping costs on the Sport and Hard Core bars will go up by $15 (thanks to UPS). This is sad to see, but finished materials costs are not going down with raw materials cost, seeing the same thing where I work.

So Flyin' Miata has agreed to extend another group buy to our forum since the last group buy we had on Hard Dog bars went so well. Each participant in the last buy saved about $55 off the total price of their order. Every little bit helps on such a part. The deal is the same as the last buy, each person will receive $20 off each bar ordered. The rest of the savings will come from drop shipping the roll bars all at once and splitting that cost between participants.

The order will need to be placed on Friday, July 30th to ensure that we do not get charged the new pricing.

So, here's what you have to do. Let me know if you're "in" in this thread, make sure to include exactly which bar you want and if you want anything else: door bars, padding, covers, etc. (FYI: Accessories are regular price.)

Please DO NOT say that you are "in" unless you are 100% committed to purchasing a roll bar, having to get quotes multiple times only annoys the companies that are extending this generous offer to us. The cutoff date for announcing your participation is July 23rd. This is only 10 days away! And it only leaves one week to submit payment, which I will handle again. There are a lot of people here who can vouch for me if you're not comfortable sending payment to someone you don't know, plus my feedback on eBay and other forums, your money will be safe and I won't disappear with it.

Payment can be in cash, by check, money order, or by PayPal (as long as you cover the 3% transaction fee).

Also, this is only for Hard Dog products!

Group Buy Participants:
  • RotorNutFD3S - M2 Hard Core Hardtop Double Diagonal - Padding w/ Vinyl Cover
  • Animus21 - M2 Sport Double Diagonal
  • HaveSand - M1 Sport No Diagonals - Padding w/ Vinyl Cover
  • Bob_Bobber0 - M1 Sport No Diagonals
  • betapi - M2 Sport Double Diagonal - Padding w/ Leather Cover
  • ez4u2chere - M2 Hard Core Hardtop Double Diagonal - Padding w/ Vinyl Cover
  • danham - M2 Sport No Diagonals

I want to see this again, or even more so I can use the roof rack!

I'm definitely interested, but I'm confused about which bar to get. My Miata is my daily driver. It's a 96. There is a very slim chance I might try autocross, but likely not. I have a new soft top with plastic window. No chance I'll get a hard top in the future.

I like the ace, because it sits further back than the others, so I'm guessing it means more room to recline and slide the seat?

Also, how many diagonals? I like none for the visibility, but if it's far less safe, I'll go with at least one. Can I add a harness bar later if I want to autocross? Would I need to?

Are some easier to install than others?

Thanks!

Personally I wouldnt trust no diagonal supports. I have an M1 Hardcore double diagonal softtop version, and love it. I like the hardcore softtop's hieght. Looking at the soft top and hard top bars, as far as cutting goes, you butcher your interior less with the softtop bar.

The Ace does sit somewhat further back, but it is also lower and narrower than the other bars, so could be lower than your head depending on your physical height. (See picture below) I can't really voice any fact on the strength with the diagonals vs. not, but I would imagine a bar with them is more structurally sound, but some very lucky people have survived rollovers with style bars, so I'd imagine you would be ok with a non-diagonal roll bar. You can add a harness bar later if you order the bar without one welded in, they do offer a bolt-in harness bar. But it only works with the Hard Bar, Sport Bar or Hard Core Bar.

If there's no chance of getting a hardtop, then definitely get the softtop bar. The butchering is about the same between both though, the hardtop version simply angles the main hoop further forward towards the cabin so it can clear the hardtop.

IDK about adding the add on cage. But because of your location, unless you have some way to pick this up, it wouldn't be very beneficial for you to participate. No offense! Everything gets shipped to one location here in GA and CT is kinda far to come pick it up.

Thanks, nice picture. I didn't care for the look of the harness bar in the pix at the Hard Dog site, but I like it on your car. How did you decide on the Ace?

Thanks, your picture really shows how the Ace is narrower, better than any other I've seen. Is that your car? Looks great.

Not my car, picture stolen from an Ace discussion thread on ClubRoadster.net.

For what bar?
I'm trying to talk myself out of them.

Ace, single rearward diagonal, AC1D-B, I believe the number would be.

basically they are a piece of curved tubing that bolts to the lower roll bar mounting position and the floor of the cockpit, garnering torsional stiffness.

said to be more effective than the butterfly brace at less weight and at a lower price.

Downsides being arguably increased danger to the lower body in a side impact and increased difficulty entering and exiting the cockpit.

Well, carp. I just went to that thread (see 1st link below), and the Ace took a lot of criticism from current owners who want to change bars already. Saw a great pic in another thread there of an M1 Sport that looks like the cockpit brace can stay in, see 2nd link below.

Therefore, I am changing my order to the M1 Sport, no diagonals.
