Job Internship (Out of Country) Opportunity

I know a lot of people have now met me once or twice on this forum now, and I have really enjoyed being a part of this group. Seeing that a lot of you are around my age and phase in life, and many more are further in life and more established in their "adult hood" I had a very BIG proposition offered to me at work by my manager this week.

To give a little background, I am 24 and have been working the past two years, since graduating from Mercer with my mechanical engineering degree, for the USA R&D department of YKK (world's largest zipper manufacturer, just look at the zipper on your blue jeans, and many more products). It is a privately owned Japanese owned company that has offices and manufacturing facilities in 70 countries world wide.

The head of YKK R&D for my region approached me this week and said that the R&D headquarters in Japan would like to do an internship for one of the American employees in USA R&D. My manager selected me out of our group as the best choice to go over there. Usually an internship is for at most 12 months; however, Japan thinks that this is not a long enough time for adequate training of their design and manufacturing procedures so they want to do this internship for a minimum of 3 years! This is a huge honor for me to be selected for this internship, and will pretty much seal my career path within the company.

This is a huge decision for me obviously as moving that far away would be a huge adjustment, plus I have no wife or family that I would be bringing with me so I would be over there alone for the most part. The biggest kicker of all is I have never lived away from home, not even when I was in college since it was only about 5 miles away from the campus. Moving out of my parents house before turning 25 has definitely been a goal of mine, I just enjoy the extra spending money too much from having no rent! ... plus fully stocked cabinets of food and free laundry service is hard to pass up.

I will also note that YKK headquarters is not in a huge city in Japan near Tokyo at all. It is actually on the Sea of Japan side of the main land. It is located in a very rural/country area of Japan were there would be almost no tourists besides other foreigners visiting YKK headquarters for training and such. I would still be within a days train ride of Tokyo, but all of my shopping and such during the week would most likely be around Japanese that spoke little to no English at all.

I would love to hear the more seasoned members here opinion on what they think of this opportunity that I have been offered. I would especially like to here from people who have possibly stayed for a prolonged period of time in Japan or another country.
