Just an fyi- Both BPs were still closed up, though I didn't rotate them. The Kia was missing the oil filler cap, but it rotated with just two hands on the crank pulley and little effort. They want $120 for a long block, undressed, plus $16 for a warranty.

Does anyone know if the Protege BPs have the oil and water ports already tapped on the exhaust side of the block (like the 94-95s & MSMs)?

Ferdi does. :D

They do until up to a certain year (I think '95). For sure any '94 and older Protege BP does. So, basically any Protege BP in that body style (1st gen).

1.8. As with all BPs. ;)

Thanks for the info Ferdi, that helps!

Someone explain why this is so awesome to me please. I am confused.

Well, it's a good price for a 1.8 with a warranty. I'd guess a 1.8 from a Miata would sell for at least three times this. And the protege comes with that JDMyo cam cover.

Plus $120 for a long block? Holy crap that's a good deal!

Well since we are somewhat heading this route, what's the biggest difference in miata motors? BP and VVT? any others I am missing?

All 94-05 Miata blocks are designated "BP", the 90-93 are "B6". VVT and VICS all refer to designs of the head or intake manifold characteristics. Even the actual heads have different designations, the 99-00 is called the BP4W for instance.

Well since we are somewhat heading this route, what's the biggest difference in miata motors? BP and VVT? any others I am missing?

There are a few FAQ's around that list the differences in BP engines

from memory:
92-94 (Protege/Escort GT) 125 hp, 8.8:1 (measured, not advertised), flapper airflow meter
94-95.5 8.8:1 (measured, not advertised) CR, 128 hp. ODBI, hotwire airflow meter
95.5-97 9.0:1 (measured and advertised) CR, 133 HP OBD1 for 95.5, ODBII for 96-97
99-00 9.5:1 CR, 140 HP. VICS, 4W head.
01-05 10.0:1 CR 142 HP, VVT
(Japan saw 10.5:1 CR for 01-05)

94-95.5 is considered best for turbo (YMMV)
99+ is considered best for NA (YMMV)

The protege must have larger horses, because I know my Protege LX with 125 ran away from a 95 Miata with 128. Or was it that drive (propellor) shaft I was missing? ;)

Typical boost approach is to get the 94-95.5 bottom end and bolt on the better flowing newer/later solid lifter head.

I noticed a protege friday at pull a part south that looked like a b6-t, It was definitely a b6 motor, because it had the 323 turbo valve cover on it, and was missing the whole exhaust manifold. The 4 door 323 was also covered in racin stickers!

Wow- I can't believe I missed that. There was one on CL for a day that had electrical issues, otherwise a very clean car. I called and the guy said it sold the day he put the ad up. Too bad, I would've been all over it even with the grief I would have gotten from the wife. ;)

I have a stupid question. How does a pull a part work if you want to get an engine out? Do you have to bring a engine hoist and some helpers?

Not exactly sure, I think they have a huge hoist on car tires that you can roll out and it is wider than the car, you just roll it over the car and pull it out.

^Yes - you just need to have it ready to pull out, then they hook and yank.
