What kind of interest would this generate? In a month or so's time. Get some cheap base runs in and a big meet up in general.

Easiest thing to do is just all meet up there on a Thursday for $50 night. Well, depends on how many people want to get dyno'd.

Forged Performance is pretty *****in', they've got a sweet dyno setup, the owner has an R35, there are R35s, R34s, 350Zs, and G37s there all the time. Stroker twin turbo VQ35 is drool-worthy, yes?

So what's the consensus on a good price? You think 10 cars at 3 runs each, $45/car? I just think whoever is calling around needs to be able to throw out the offer first and then be able to say they are price shopping.

It might even be worth it to mention a return visit to the same dyno. In theory, I should go back to Balanced since that's where I did my last pulls if I wanted to see what the muff has done.

Do we have a date? I'm up for Feb- as Jan is busy. Though I'm supposed to be running the 6-hour at Rd. Atlanta Feb 21-22.

Forgot about them... When I had my Ion I got it dynoed at Dyno Lab on the Mustang dyno, so it could be cool to have a direct comparison between the Ion and my Mazda. I had 106 RWHP on Forged Performance's dyno, and a whopping 145 FWHP with the Ion at Dyno Lab. Although I highly doubt my Mazda could touch the Ion's torque.... 166 ft.-lbs., baby. Ok sent out an email to dyno labs. And just spoke to Lethal Injection on the phone. They don't normally do dyno days but he said the regular off the street dyno run cost $75. For 10 of us it would be $50 a piece. For more than 10, about 20 ish we'll be looking at about $40 a piece for 3 runs which sounds like a pretty good deal.

All they asked for is a couple weeks notice. The aim would be a Saturday morning in Feb. So I need to do a head count now.

I highly doubt it would come with any data aquisitoin. The "cheap" runs @ most places are power pulls, not tuning sessions. Dyno labs charges $150/hour for tuning w/ their data aq. You'll get RPM (obviously), but that's it. If you want to log more you'd need an ECU w/ its own data logging.

If you want to log more you'd need an ECU w/ its own data logging.I've been to dyno days where they don't collect any data at all, including RPM (they simply run your graph power vs ground speed) and others where they grab RPM MAP and A/F. Sometimes they'll charge like $10 extra to get the data, sometimes they do it for no extra charge.

For people that do not have ability to capture data, it's a good thing to do.

Usually not if you're running 3 pulls. If you want to tune, you rent time by the hour. You really need a few hours on the dyno to get spark dialed in. Spark is where the power is. A/F is low consequence really.

Mainstream will grab RPM and AF fario (with a tail pipe sniffer)...and they regularly host dyno days. Don't know what their price is though.

FE3tMX5
01-11-2009, 07:19 PM
Nice to have the rpm and a/f. IMO that data is mandatory for knowing something about your power, especially if you don't have a wbO2. And if you do, it's nice to have a reference against your wbO2. The dyno group I did with dyno lab way back gave enough time for the car to cool down reasonably. You could probably swap out a muff/test pipe or make cam gear adjustments in that time.

Jack-MX5ATLanta.com

Got another response from Dynolabs and that was $40 each with no wideband sensor for 20 miata. Which would also involve 2 people from here doing the strapping down of cars.

I don't know what dynolabs looks like as a place but I know Lethal Injection has all sorts of really cool cars to gawk at and are really friendly people for the most part and would make great hosts.

4 hours isn't too bad typically, but I would be afraid of what would happen if I blew my engine on the rollers that far from home.

Jack,

Who did you talk to?

MeFryRice
01-27-2009, 09:38 AM
If you'd like, I can swing by after work and talk to them for you? They are literally right around the corner from my office.

If you'd like to talk to them, talk to Thomas Watckins (more likely the person to answer the phone) or Tim Hannon (the owner). I suggest you talk to Thomas before Tim though.

Jack-MX5ATLanta.com
01-27-2009, 12:25 PM
I spoke to Thomas just then. He said he's gonna check out the books and see what he can do. They normally charge $50 for 3 pulls but hopefully some sort of group rate can be reached. I'm planning for 21st Feb, which give plenty of time.

Steve you could still drop by and talk up mx5atlanta, perhaps sweeten them up for us ;)

MeFryRice

Any updates Steve? They didn't call me back. I might just go with lethal injection, they're cool guys.

There really isn't anywhere appropriately sized for any decent autocross. There's the kart track area / skid pad, but that track's barely wide enough for any normal sized car to fit, much less have room to maneuver w/o putting a tire off.

Then there's liability. Who's sanctioning and insuring it? Who's providing timing equipment? Who's providing cones?

These things don't just appear out of thin air. Ask me how I know (or just show up at Six Flags at 6:30 AM on the 1st of March to see for yourself ;))

good point, I was thinking about using the support paddock it's big enough to have a small auto X, and I've talked to the track manager about useing the skid pad. His answer was pay the money per hour, and you assume all risk on yourself (not that using the skid pad is a timed event). I think thats how Kinetic gets away with it besides I'm not really wanting to put together a full blown championship, and I've never been in the track with out signing the waiver even when no event is being held. it's all in how you word it i guess.
