Hey there, I'm Cameron. I don't have an MX5 yet, but I am searching around to buy one! Saving sucks...but hopefully it'll be worth it once I can buy a Miata and mod it  however I want to.
I look forward to possibly buying a Miata sometime very soon and being at meets! :)

welcome.
Maybe we can help. What year are you interested in? What condition are you looking for? What is your price range? What kind of mods are you wanting to do?

Looking for a 90-97, preferably in as good of shape as I can find. Right now I've got about 2200 saved..but every week I have about 210 coming in, so the longer I wait, obviously the nicer I can get. Mod wise, I want to do suspension work to make it look sexy as hell on some Work Equip 03's. Eventually have a nice Charcoal color with some Equip 03's with the gold centers ;) as for motor mods..not quite sure on it..because I don't know what the stock motor can hold as of yet. But I want to put a rollbar on it because they just look gnarly..have it painted to match the rims. And get a hardtop on it so I don't have to worry about the soft top. That's about all for now, but I will ponder up some more stuff!

Yes sir! hopefully will buy this..mod it a little, then turn it into a weekend car and just pick up some sort of beater for every day driving! :)

Get a 90-95 car pre OBD II cars only have to pass the sniff test. 94 & 95 cars have the 1.8 motor, but Flyin' Miata sells a conversion kit for $200 that will let you put the 1.8 into a 90-93 1.6 car. Unless you are a purist like Kurt (Metalman, from whom all must buy parts) and prefer the faster reving 1.6 lump. I have both, so I get to enjoy the best of both worlds. Coming to this site before purchasing is an excellent move, these guys pretty much know every good car that comes availible, and asking questions before putting down your cash is a great idea. WELCOME!!

Thanks a ton all! And I was searching Autotrader for ****s and giggles..found a 2005 Mazdaspeed Miata, just under 100k on the clock(A lot for an 05, I know) but there were roughly only 1400 of these cars made in 2005, due to a fire at the production plant..it's right at 11k...should I even be debating on this? Give me opinions! Haha

If you are going to spend that much, might as well aim high and go a couple Gs more and get one with half that mileage.
That being said, I'm on my 2nd MSM and have a love hate with the 2nd... first one reached sainthood... God rest it's soul...

I haven't seen any other ones for sale other than that one(but I wasn't really "looking".) I just came across it before I went to sleep last night. ;)
Explain why it's a "love hate" marriage with the 2nd one?

your not too far off on saving for a nice NA. We found ours at ACE Hardware in May. It had 140k on the clock, was adult owned and driven, and not a whole lot more than you have now.
Try this tool www.craigzoom.com (http://www.craigzoom.com). You'll find all kinds of miatas there.

Hmm..awesome! Thanks a ton! I'm kind of siding more with getting the 05 MSM I found, BUT..I do love the NA's. Especially on Work Equip 03's :D

I would say save for a Mazdaspeed, but I'm a little biased. :)

I am a little biased too...and I would pass up nearly any NB for a quality early NA.

I agree. Except for the early part, I like the 94-95.

It's hard to find a nicely modded NA though..and NB's seem as though they were be a tad more reliable, due to being newer(less miles on the motor). As well as the chances of finding one in really nice shape will be hard to find on the NA..BUT. I would love to have either one. I have plans thought out for each :D

INB's seem as though they were be a tad more reliable,
Uhhhh what?? Uhh no.
I can tell you having owned all of them that a 1.6 car is the most reliable Miata ever built.
But...none of them are 'bad', except maybe 99-00...likely among the 'worst', 97's are known for many issues as well...comparatively speaking that is. Late 91-94 I would rank among the best.

Sorry for ****ty grammar btw :D
Finding a nice 1.6 with "low" miles for the year, would be hard to do though..as well as finding something in nice shape..being that I don't settle for ****boxes and fix them up..I would rather have a nice car to start with and spend a little more money lol

I wouldn't focus so much on the mileage as much as maintenance. When these engines, either 1.6 or 1.8, are well maintained they can last a very long time.

Then I would probably only buy one from someone on here who can be vouched for by a ton of people. Because I don't want something that I'm going to be like "yes! ******* badass!" and then it break in 2 days.

lol True. There are of course inspections you can complete yourself that will give you a good idea of the overall condition of the car.
A couple walkthroughs:

Low mile 1.6s arent that hard to find. But as Eric said, previous care is a major factor.

So..next weekend I think I'm going to go look at the MSM! Hopefully it's as clean as it is in the pictures. Interior shows a little bit of wear, but that would be replaced with Recaro seats in the near future. I have an "idea" on the rims/suspension I want for it..if I get it. However, what would be a "good way" to go on Coilovers? Anyone here have experience with H&R or KW for Miata's?
