Hey guys,
I need some help trouble shooting a sound that my tranny is making, the sound is a rattling sound, and it’s more apparent after a cold start in the morning, and only happens while in first, second, or third gear (as far as I know), and only after I let off the throttle, and it does continue to do it while driving but only until it warms up. I have noticed a viscous fluid coming from what seems to be an over flow hole on the back of the bell housing it drips on my floor I’m wondering if this may have something to do with it??? Can anyone help?

flush your tranny. miata gearboxes are know for being loud though, its most likely nothing to worry about.

I've got plans for that tomorrow, I just wanted to make sure it was not a going to be a $2000 thing. tell Tom Justin says hello, and Stand21 still wants to work out a deal with him and the drivers over there at OPM!!!

miata transmissions are noisy, yes, but I've NEVER heard a rattling sound coming from (the three of) mine. Seriously, check that out. And what year's your car? because if it's one of the early ones, it's at most a $250 "thing" if you know where to look. Hell, the last 2 transmissions I bought were $125 lol

i will next time i talk to him. havent had much to do up there recently.

my car made a horrible noise coming from the tranny and it freaked me out for a while but finally figured out it was normal. lol. i could understand saying it was arattling noise. i think thats how i would describe it. does it get alot worse when youre engine braking?

yeah its normal. for some reason all miata gearboxes can be loud. changing your fluid will help though.

one more Question for you how much fluid will it take??? I was only able to get one and three quarters of a quart in.

just fill it until it starts to drip out of the filler hole. if you stick your finger in and you can feel the oil inside and its level with the hole, youre good.

ok so I still hear the sound though it's not as bad it is still there... I'm thinking if it were normal it would have been doing this from the car lot, so Me thinks I'll take it to a pro.

What fluid did you put back in it?
The trans. in my 99 did the same thing while engine braking. I solved the problem by getting a louder exhaust.

I put 80/90 gear oil in it, but the past couple of days I've have noticed the noise getting just as loud as it was before, I'll be in Daytona for the testing This weekend so I'll have to address it when i get back.
