On August 6, 1945 brave American fliers dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
In my view those men are heroes. They did their duty as asked by their country.
Some now would have America 'apologize' for such actions.
I find such an idea repugnant. To do so would dishonor all those who sacrificed both life and limb in that struggle.

Japan cowardly attacked the United States without any provocation, all the while pretending to maintain normal relations. That country's military leaders were stubbornly willing to sacrifice every last Japanese life and countless Allied lives in their 'cause'.
That bomb and the subsequent one dropped on Nagasaki on August 9 brought their dictator to a realization that humanity and life itself was far more important then that 'cause'. The bombs dropped, and the lives sacrificed there saved millions of others and possibly even preserved a culture. Japan survives today as a result. We should NEVER apologize for that.
And I abhor any politician who hints otherwise.

The only people I feel sorry for are Truman, Openheimer, his staff, and the crew of the Enola Gay. They did things and made decisions that no one should ever be asked to do.

I don't know if I'd say "The Japs had it comin'." That's harsh. It was a necessary evil.

It really was the best solution to a nightmare scenario. The propaganda fed to Japanese citizens about how we trained our Marines, and our policies on POW's had them living in fear. When combined with the fact that they were teaching guerrilla resistance tactics to citizens, plus other factors, it all added up. It would have been months of continued warfare, loss of life far beyond what the bombs claimed, and relations between the two countries would still be tense. It's hard to think of a nuclear strike as a good option, but in that case I think it was.

I agree with Kurt. Glorifying the deaths is in poor taste, but honoring and remembering the courage and sacrifice of those involved should be passed down to every generation.
