View Full Version : MX5Atlanta.com FM/Hard Dog Roll Bar Group Buy

Here's the deal, prices on all Hard Dog roll bars are going up 10% on August 1st, at the same time, shipping costs on the Sport and Hard Core bars will go up by $15 (thanks to UPS). This is sad to see, but finished materials costs are not going down with raw materials cost, seeing the same thing where I work.
So Flyin' Miata has agreed to extend another group buy to our forum since the last group buy we had on Hard Dog bars went so well. Each participant in the last buy saved about $55 off the total price of their order. Every little bit helps on such a part. The deal is the same as the last buy, each person will receive $20 off each bar ordered. The rest of the savings will come from drop shipping the roll bars all at once and splitting that cost between participants.
The order will need to be placed on Friday, July 30th to ensure that we do not get charged the new pricing.
So, here's what you have to do. Let me know if you're "in" in this thread, make sure to include exactly which bar you want and if you want anything else: door bars, padding, covers, etc. (FYI: Accessories are regular price.)
Please DO NOT say that you are "in" unless you are 100% committed to purchasing a roll bar, having to get quotes multiple times only annoys the companies that are extending this generous offer to us. The cutoff date for announcing your participation is July 23rd. This is only 10 days away! And it only leaves one week to submit payment, which I will handle again. There are a lot of people here who can vouch for me if you're not comfortable sending payment to someone you don't know, plus my feedback on eBay and other forums, your money will be safe and I won't disappear with it.
Payment can be in cash, by check, money order, or by PayPal (as long as you cover the 3% transaction fee).
Also, this is only for Hard Dog products!

I'm definitely interested, but I'm confused about which bar to get. My Miata is my daily driver. It's a 96. There is a very slim chance I might try autocross, but likely not. I have a new soft top with plastic window. No chance I'll get a hard top in the future.
I like the ace, because it sits further back than the others, so I'm guessing it means more room to recline and slide the seat?
Also, how many diagonals? I like none for the visibility, but if it's far less safe, I'll go with at least one. Can I add a harness bar later if I want to autocross? Would I need to?
Are some easier to install than others?
Thanks!

Personally I wouldnt trust no diagonal supports. I have an M1 Hardcore double diagonal softtop version, and love it. I like the hardcore softtop's hieght. Looking at the soft top and hard top bars, as far as cutting goes, you butcher your interior less with the softtop bar.

The Ace does sit somewhat further back, but it is also lower and narrower than the other bars, so could be lower than your head depending on your physical height. (See picture below) I can't really voice any fact on the strength with the diagonals vs. not, but I would imagine a bar with them is more structurally sound, but some very lucky people have survived rollovers with style bars, so I'd imagine you would be ok with a non-diagonal roll bar. You can add a harness bar later if you order the bar without one welded in, they do offer a bolt-in harness bar. But it only works with the Hard Bar, Sport Bar or Hard Core Bar.

If there's no chance of getting a hardtop, then definitely get the softtop bar. The butchering is about the same between both though, the hardtop version simply angles the main hoop further forward towards the cabin so it can clear the hardtop.

IDK about adding the add on cage. But because of your location, unless you have some way to pick this up, it wouldn't be very beneficial for you to participate. No offense! Everything gets shipped to one location here in GA and CT is kinda far to come pick it up. :)

basically they are a piece of curved tubing that bolts to the lower roll bar mounting position and the floor of the cockpit, garnering torsional stiffness.
said to be more effective than the butterfly brace at less weight and at a lower price.
Downsides being arguably increased danger to the lower body in a side impact and increased difficulty entering and exiting the cockpit.

I'm pretty sure I want in on this, but I'm new to the miata world and need some help deciding which bar to get.
I have a '96 that's probably going to be 50/50 track/street at a minimum. In time, it's probably going to be mostly for track.
Anyway, I have a hardtop, so one that works with a hardtop is important. Soft top is not as important as I haven't decided if I want to keep or ditch the soft top at this point.
I'd like something to support a harness as well.
Do most people get the padding/covers/etc... as well?
Thanks!!!
RotorNutFD3S
07-15-2010, 03:31 PM
For track use, I'd recommend the Hard Core (thicker tubing) bars. If you order the M1 Hard Core, the integrated harness bar is included with the price, but then you cannot have a glass rear window soft top, only the vinyl rear window. For hard top use, you'll need the Hard Top version obviously.
Padding and covers are up to you, I'd recommend at least padding for the track as it will absorb a lot of impact combined with a helmet if something were to happen. The cover is for aesthetics really as the padding discolors pretty badly if left exposed to the sun, kinda dries out. Door bars help a lot with torsional rigidity, but as mentioned, with the downside of making the car harder to get in/out of and possibly hurting you in a side impact.

OK, thanks. So it looks like the M1 Hardcore Hardtop is the bar I need? Just need to decide on the double diagonals or the X-brace diagonal? Any opinions on either?
Think I'll pass on the door bars right now. I just want to track this for a little while, and if I find the car is something I like, I'll probably just cage it.
RotorNutFD3S
07-15-2010, 10:19 PM
Well with the double diagonals, the harness bar is welded in, with the X-brace, you have to purchase the bolt-in harness bar separately. However, they do claim that the X-brace is the stronger bar. Nobody plans on flipping their Miata, but personally I think that the normal double diagonal is strong enough, I loved the one I had on my NA. Vision in the rear view mirror is slightly reduced with the double diagonal, but you get used to it and compensate by using the side mirrors more for where you can't see.
That works. They have a bolt-in cage addition too for whenever you decide to go that route.

A few answers -
I don't see any reason why the cage couldn't be included in this deal. It would be shipped to wherever Rotornut is having these shipped, though.
About the Hard Top bars compared to the soft top version - the Hard Core Hard Top bars have the same geometry as the Sport bars. The hoop sits further back and lower. The difference is that the Hard Core Hard Top is made of beefier tubing and comes standard with a harness bar or tabs and a diagonal, both of which are options on the Sport.
The ACE sits much further back. Because of the shape of the top, this means it has to be lower yet. Personally, I don't think they offer enough protection for most people of average height, but they don't require much in the way of compromises. The Deuce has a similar problem.
If "M3" means third generation Miata, then Jack you are in luck! Hard Dog does indeed make a bar for those cars. We have one in our own NC. If it means BMW, well, no.

Bob,
I am in pretty much the same situation, but without a hard top. I chose the M1 sport with no diagonals, for best protection and visibility. I almost went with the Ace, but there were some strong criticisms on other boards (see my post above). The M1 only works with a plastic rear window. If you have glass or want to go glass in the future, the M2 would be a good choice.
Hope this helps, and welcome to the buy!

Alright, I guess its now or never for me, any idea what the total cost will be obo? M1 Sport.
All I can tell you right now is that $20 will be taken off the price of the bar, until we have a shipping quote we won't know how much shipping is. And we can't get a shipping quote until I know how many bars we're ordering. But to give you a general idea of how it worked last time, the basic M1 Sport (no diagonals) would have run about $330 instead of $385.
So what are the pros other than being able to have a glass top?
Nothing really, other than if you decide you don't need it down the line, you can remove it and sell it. It's plenty strong though.
Keith@FM
07-19-2010, 12:55 PM
I'd recommend the Sport for Bob as well. It's the best choice for a street car in my opinion. If you want a bit more strength, the Hard Core Hard Top uses the same design but with 1.75" tube instead of 1.5".
If you have an aftermarket glass window, you need an M2 bar - Hard Dog didn't see the "M3" nomenclature problem coming :) For an extra $15 (single) or $20 (double), Hard Dog will tweak the diagonals to be compatible with a larger-than-stock aftermarket window.
If anyone wants help picking the right bar, feel free to give us a call at 800 359 6957.

Being only occasional, I just stumbled into here. Greatly interested - but do I want diagonals on the M1 sport? didn't have 'em last time...
Where are they being shipped to? Reason for the question, I'm over in the Woodstock area, with a fine pickup, but a broken right ankle. Using the AirCast (tm), I can heel and toe anything. In fact, no way to hit just the gas...
Now I can left foot the mercedes - only auto trans I own, but the bar won't fit even that big trunk, so I gotta figure out that 'last mile' problem before committing.
So - where do they end up?
Also -discounts on accessories (padding) also, or don't bother?
Thanks

I'm getting the M1 sport with no diagonals, because I want better visibility. I believe the bar is strong and stiff enough to resist a roll without them. The diagonals will probably help stiffen the car for driving, and they look pretty cool.

I might be able to help you out, in exchange for some installation help, especially if you've done this before. I have a minivan that can handle both bars easily. I live in Norcross, which ain't exactly close, but at least we are on the same side of I-285 top end.

Keith@FM

Exactly - you'll save on shipping, but the accessories are full price.
I'd recommend getting one of the vinyl or leather covers. They come with SFI padding to protect your head and make the car look more finished. It's a lot slicker than the usual big chunks of generic round padding held on with zipties.
My first Miata had a Sport with no diagonals. Very easy to live with. But the double-diagonal bars are pretty good from a visibility standpoint, and that's what I'd install now.

I have a garage, a decent shop fan, and a right-angle drill. I had planned to make the sheet metal cuts with a jig saw or conventional tin snips. Am I being naive? Brian, got you down for your bar, you have it correct. Payment will be coordinated after I get a final price from FM which includes shipping costs. It can be made by cash, check, money order, or PayPal (you'll have to cover the 3% transaction fee for PayPal though).
Sorry to hear about your ankle! I can meet anyone with a bar or bars to help cut down on the traveling. I know my van will fit 7 of them at least.
A cutoff wheel is probably the best choice for trimming the rear tray, it's what I've used for every rollbar install I've done or helped with. Snips work fine too, but the cutoff wheel makes it fast and clean. Right angle drill is nice as well, but a normal drill will work fine in a pinch.
I do most of my work in my carport right now (a project car is taking up my whole garage at the moment), it's covered and the house is under a lot of shade, so if anyone would like to come down and install their rollbar, I'd be more than happy to accomodate it. I will be out of town from August 7-14, and because of that I may have to recruit one of my friends to help distribute the bars at least. They came in 4 or 5 days after we paid last time, so we should have them before I'm gone.

Eric, I've abused the heck outta me some air rotary cutoff. I agree, but on that panel it's almost overkill :-) Guess it's back to china harbor...now my HVAC buddy has a little sheet metal nibbler that runs off drill power...and he does get to manipulate some sheet metal...
If payment is needed quickly, I'll be happy to PayPal, but other wisechecks or cash are cheaper. Yeah, I'm sorry about the ankle, too. Didn't realize it was more than a bad sprain for a week.
Poor little miata sitting outside, all alone, double-bagged against the elements... :-(
And you say, but you have a garage... yes, I have two. And women about, so I'm lucky to have one garage space for a car. Right now, it's full of the only car I can drive, cause that's also the easiest place to get to a car. dadgum dagnabit ankle grumble grumble..

You want the M2
RotorNutFD3S
07-22-2010, 11:30 AM
Yeah, I'd say M2 just in case you decide to keep the soft top and replace it for one with a glass rear window. I wish I had gotten an M2 when I had my '95.

Eric -
I'm convinced. Change mine to one that can accomodate a glass windopw, in case I ever do. That would be a 9S2D, Black Powdercoat w/ Double Diagonal, at the same price, verify please. I mean, you _are_ recommending it just now, right? Thanks for the insight.

OK, I want to make sure I understand, so a couple more questions before I pull the trigger on this.... I'll probably call FM tomorrow anyway, but any input here is nice too.
I don't even know if I want the soft-top at all, that's why I'm still teetering between the M1 and M2. My soft top is currently pretty well shot, and I found a used glass window top for a decent price, that's the only reason I was considering. Believe it or not, today was the very first day I've driven my miata. (Long story... Bought it, traveled for work, changed the TB, etc...., got it inspected (rebuilt title), went on vacation, got a temp tag today.)
Anyway, If I get the M1 bar, the harness bar is built in at no additional cost?
If I get the M2 bar, I have to buy the harness bar for $150 extra?
The only advantage of the M2 vs the M1 is the use of a glass soft top?
If I get the M2, is it cheaper to buy the harness bar now vs later?
Looking at the pics, it appears as though the padding/covers are installed prior to install, so that needs to be purchased up front too?
Only reason I'm looking at this buy at all is because I "need" it to track it. I honestly don't even know if a miata is the car for me or not. I have an '05 S2000, but quickly realized the expenses involved in tracking one of these, and that's why I picked up the miata. I just want to give the miata a fair shot, and for all I know, I'll love it and sell the s2000 as it's pretty much rarely driven to begin with.

EZ,
IMHO: If you are already thinking track use, how long until you want to enter other events, like SCCA, etc? IF so, you want the Hard Core bar, or you get to change later.
I know I won't be doing anything more than maybe track days with my current one, but I still want the safety and BTW increases stiffness, just like GT4 says!
Pading is a zip-on install, IIRC. Could have changed since my last one...
Get it. At 6 feet, my head can get real hurt. Roll bars are really made to work with helmets, not naked skulls. And you want padding with decent crush properties - it is, again, your head.

You got it, and I've changed your bar on the list. I'm recommending it if you think you'll ever change to a glass rear window top.

If you get the M1 Hard Core, the harness bar is included.
If you get the M2 Hard Core, harness tabs are included, or you can purchase the bolt-in harness bar separately.
That's the main difference, just compatibility of rear windows.
The harness bar would be regular price, but you'd save some money on the shipping cost. It's also a lot easier to install the harness bar when the roll bar is going in. If you get it later, you have to loosen the roll bar and then install, which requires taking interior parts out and if you used it, removing the rubberized undercoating.
The padding and covers can be added anytime, the padding has a 3M type adhesive on it and the cover goes on just as easily.
I may be a little biased being on my second (technically 3rd) Miata, but I've also had my fair share of driving experience in S2000s, they're really great cars, but I still like the Miata more all the way around, even if it is slower in n/a form.

Update: Just talked to Bethania Garage, there's been a small delay on the padding and covers, so they're working on that and then the bars will be on the way. I will be emailed the tracking information as soon as they're shipped.
I will be going out of town this Saturday for a week, I need to know if I need to make special arrangements for anyone who wants to pick their bar up as soon as it arrives or if everyone can wait until I return as it now appears that they'll arrive while I'm gone.

We're still looking at a delay with the padding apparently... They expect it to arrive any time, however, if the padding has not arrived by early next week, they are going to ship the bars without the padding and ship the padding later. My main concern is getting the bars here in time for the install day.

You and me both. Nothing has changed since my last update, we agreed that if they didn't have the padding by tomorrow that they'd ship the bars without it. That'll get them here by Friday.
I was told a lot of the delay stemmed from the Sport bars, apparently the design was just changed due to a change in SCCA regs. that affected those bars.

I'd love for them to come Thursday, because one of my coworkers lives near you and he'd bring them to me at the office Friday Morning. (I'm getting betapi's bar too.) If not, I'll get them Friday night, I guess. Will you be available for Thursday or Friday PM pickup, assuming they get here?

Ok, just got off the phone. Bars will be definitely going out tomorrow. Their padding supplier sent the padding yesterday and it will arrive to them today. They'll pack them with the appropriate bars and then they'll be on the way tomorrow as they'll miss the pickup window today. I doubt they'll get here in one day, so Friday will probably be it.

Roll bars have been sorted, marked with everyone's name, and are ready to go. HaveSand, your bar and betapi's bar are ready to go as agreed. :)
Padding and covers are correct for those who ordered them. Hardware is with each bar, so hopefully everything is correct there (the hardware pouches are attached to the legs of each bar and I did not go through them).
