Sorry to hear that man! Hopefully things will turn around for you and you'll find what you're looking for. Hell, you know how everyone on here is always looking for something, now finding you a rolling shell is our new project. If we can find Steve an NA, we can find anyone anything. :)

And don't worry about the Secret Santa thing, we'll figure that all out.

Nic, have you thought about maybe going to the bank and getting a small personal loan to buy another car? Then, you can sell parts off your 91 and pay it toward the loan. Just an idea. There are plenty of Miatas out there for $4k or less.

MeFryRice
12-17-2008, 08:44 AM
That's not a bad idea.

What mike said or if your motor all that is still good try and find some rolling shell and just swap over all the parts.

Hey just look at it this way you where talking about wanting to redo the whole paint on your car now you have a new canvas to work with instead of having to paint over the old. BTW I hope your hood and trunk made it so you can atleast hold on to that.

I vote: part out your current wreaked car and use the motor to buy a rolling shell and swap over your drive train.

Good luck and I'll see you Thursday if you end up going.

I think that's what his plans were. ;)

I didn't catch the part about the rolling shell just the 97 and since I know his car is a 1.6 I didn't think he was planing to swap the 1.6 into a 97 rolling shell.

Ok I am going to go back to eating my pop tart now..

metalman
12-17-2008, 10:24 AM
The rolling shell idea is one that is easier said then done.
The thing about NAs is that the value or worth is NOT in the drivetrain, but in the body.
Drivetrains are very cheap in comparison to body parts, roofs, and paintjobs etc
Of course there are always exceptions but those are often a matter of luck & timing.

If it was me, I would sell either the whole thing for parts..which is the quickest route to a little cash... or part it...which can be a sloooow route....and just buy a running car.

Of course I am basing this somewhat on assumptions of damage here. What all is crunched on your car???

GraffitiPanda
12-17-2008, 10:30 AM
i have 3 options...
1. take the 99 nb i might work out payments on...
2. ask my grandfather for a loan
3. take out a loan if anyone will give me one...

ill post pics soon.. im going to get her now...

Well, doors, fenders, and quarter panels etc can all be replaced.
Its a matter of whether and how much of the frame & inner structure is crunched.

Doppelgänger
12-17-2008, 10:36 AM
1- if you work out payments, make sure to get everything in writing and have it notorized. Always document payments if you're making them to a private party.

2- Not a bad idea...maybe even get him to co-sign on a loan.

3- I'd try it first. You are at the age where you need to start building credit if you have not already. If you've had any credit cards or loans and know you've been good on the payments...then try to get one on your own.

metalman

3. take out a loan if anyone will give me one...

Of these options, I would skip #1.
Anyone willing to take payments is usually getting ALOT for their 'favor' in return...or selling you a ****ty car they cant sell otherwise. Buy here/pay here is never good.

Number 3, only if its a legitimate loan from a bank where you will build credit...at a reasonable cost...not from Tony who drives a black caddy. ;)

Number 2, tricky one. Borrowing from family is dicey. Might be worth seeing IF your car can be fixed for a reasonable amount and ask him to help you with that. Just a thought.

Hard to tell from pic...but quarter panel and door are easily replaced.
The question is, whats the side frame rail like? Before I got too carried away
I would have someone look at it. Cottrell would be my choice. Fixes this kind of
thing all the time...and reasonable.
The parts are no biggie...I even have those for the most part.

wildfire0310
12-17-2008, 01:44 PM
yea I was wondering the same thing when I saw the photo.. It seems all the damage is in the upper 50% of the car. The damage to the door jam looks nasty to me, but I don't have even a 25% the knowledge you have about damage miata, Kurt.

I cannot see that from the pic. It doesnt look it...but that would need to be examined.
The impact looks mostly high in the door.

To be honest, the quarter panel could probably be salvaged, I have seen much worse...but being along an edge it might
be easier to do some welding with a piece cut from another car. Body man would be the one to say what would work best.

Do both parties corroborate that story? Did you get a police report? Witnesses? It is a big deal because you'll have an at-fault accident on your record which will do very interesting things to your insurance.

Hmmm...well the dash itself is no big issue, just the unibody IF it were to be tweaked.
However, often dashes take a beating from the driver/passenger etc even though you may not even realize it. Was there an airbag deployment?
