View Full Version : More Tales of My Idiot Boss

So a coworker of mine recently hit the jackpot. His band has been signed to a five year-multiple album, contract. Needless to say he's making plenty of cash and no longer needs to work at Attina's Music.

So Monday he went in and informed our boss that he was leaving.

Needless to say my boss went ape**** (I wasn't there but I have a few accounts of the event that all match up.)

The previous week was the coworker's vacation week. He was gone to Nashville signing papers and putting in studio time. Because he's worked there for nine years it was a paid vacation per company policy.

My boss is now saying that the employee owes him $906.00 for the two weeks of vacation he's taken this year. Like most companies at ours we earn vacation time for the upcoming year (so I work a year I get a weeks vacation). Our boss is now claiming that we don't earn our vacation but instead we work it off for the year following the vacation. WTF? Besides if this were true we would technically get a vacation during our first year which we don't because he informs us that "Paid vacation time must be earned."

He also informed this employee that his life would most likely be down hill from here and he will see this day as the biggest mistake of his life.

I know that most people think their boss is an idiot and an ******* but this guy just gets better every day!

He should be reported to the GA Department of Labor for withholding pay. Your boss will then get an unannonced visit by investigators and will be required to submitt all payroll paperwork for the last three years immediately. It will be audited for all overtime and vacation. If something is found that violates Ga laws he will be required to pay all back pay and also pay a big fine.

Dr.Drew

He's in a band called "badhorse"

Yepp, I'll be there 10-5 tomorrow. Although it's a pay week and for the last few months he hasn't come in on payday (so he doesn't have to pay us).

No we have plenty of digital pianos, synths, workstations, and controllers.

I actually came in today and he said "well I had to fire Chris"

That doesn't compute. If the guy voluntsry separated because of his record deal then he is not on the hook for unemployment. If he fires him (for anything other than cause that has gone through a PIP process) then he will probably have to pay unemployment.

The problem is, ***-hole employers like this will make up a case IF unemployment is filed for and the final decision becomes an arbitrary one made by some bureaucrat...and its often not too difficult for an employer to win. I have seen this firsthand.

IMHO his current employees are in a better situation to stick it to him then a fired 'disgruntled former employee'. If I was working there I would be diligently working overtime gathering data with the intent on screwing him severely with the law.....from every conceivable angle.
As I said before, he would become my hobby.

Having a boss like that is something I don't envy. I had one far too long that in many ways was insane. I often wonder how I did it for as long as I did. It has been 7 years since I worked there and I still carry some resentment.

I know the economy sux and all but you really need to get out of there.

Yeah, that's some BS. Time to get the state involved IMO.

Dr.Drew
05-21-2010, 11:12 AM
The reason he told me he fired him is because he didn't want to loose face. He doesn't want any of us to think he doesn't have total control.

Working overtime is not an option. Even if we could we wouldn't get paid for it. I have to be here 15 minutes before we open everyday to get the lights and computers on. Which is over an hour a week I don't get paid for. It's simple, work extra if you want but don't expect any more money

That is actually illegal. Do you keep a timecard? A lot of this stuff is just plain mean but he is violating some laws as well.

The guy who got the record contract should send him a copy of one of his rather large royalty checks, a copy of his first cd and a note that says "what now, *****"

Dr.Drew
05-21-2010, 11:18 AM
No, no time cards or a clock to check into.

Luckily I'm busting my *** to find something better. I won't be as nice when I leave ;)

I've got three years experience as a "Client Relations Specialist" and I lived for a year and a half as a freelancer so I might just go back to that. The pay isn't as consistent but overall it's better.

Call the department of labor when you leave. Please. Someone needs to put this ******* in his place and maybe you can get some back overtime pay out of it.

Dynra Rockets

No, no time cards or a clock to check into.

That is a violation right there. Anyone part-time must have a time card. If you make a phone call he will be fined $10,000.

Seriously, you need to take very intelligent decisive calculated action.
Generally *******s like this violate all kinds of laws and policies so carefully consider all the angles, whether it be related to tax/finance, labor, wage and hour, vendors, OSHA, the fire marshall, etc etc etc, whatever applies in his situation.
Gather hard facts, dates, times, documents if possible, etc etc be diligent and spend a bit of time constructing specific intelligent reports to the proper authorities. The satisfaction from doing so will far outweigh the 'reward' of menial pay for working for such a dick.

And when you decide to leave, hit it from every one of the angles like a blitz. Some of them will stick.

i will tell you one thing as far as the vacation...he has to inform you thats how the vacation works. My work recently switched to that vacation plan and they inform me every pay check how much vacation i have accrued for that year.

Yeah, I said musicians, like people that play instruments. Although I do think there is merit in some rap, specifically earlier rap, the Roots, etc. Most of the modern "bling" and "crunk" rap has the same value as that mid-eighties "cock rock" bull****.

But as an actual musician reaching any level where you're making a serious amount of money is rare. Most of the guys I know have resorted to either teaching or playing churches (those huge mega churches you see can pay up to 600 for a single Sunday).

I think the last genuine jazz gig I did paid 65 which isn't much after you drive to wherever it is. Although they usually include free drinks which is nice :D

The huge radio consolidation that happened after the Telecommunications act of 1996 hasn't helped. Previously an owner could only have 8 stations total. Now companies like Clear have bought hundreds across the country and they all have the same playlists which are focus-group-formed. Remember when DaveFM came around and there was the story that it was started by some dude named Dave who wanted to play good music. It's all bull****, just like "Bob FM" "Mike FM" "Jack FM" "Frank FM" and the countless other "[Standard white male name} FM"'s out there.

This means that there's not much room left for independent or specialized stations to spread new bands and acts.

Then MTV and VH1 completely gave way to sh*t reality TV when the networks realized that Reality shows were much cheaper because they don't have to pay writers. So don't expect to hear any new music on those stations.

So what we're left with is over-produced, autotuned out the ***, fame hungry kids who act like whores to sell albums and turn their backs on musical aspiration.

So then the good bands and musicians are left playing in Lady Ga Ga's and Kanye's touring band making pennies an hour.

Or they turn to Metal, which is worse than selling out to pop music.

and I hate when people say "there's no good music anymore" because there is. You just have to take a minute and look for it.

Yeah, sorry about the rant. It just seems like the two things I enjoy doing, writing and playing music, and two things that are nearly impossible to do for a living. At least if you want to live comfortably anyway.
