My buddy texted me today asking me if the quote he got for some repairs seems legit....

He told me that he was quoted $750 to replace..... front brake pads, the air filter, and the oil pan gasket on a 97 civic...... WTF?

To me that's easily < $100 job to do....

if you want to replace ONLY the oil pan gasket you have to buy a whole lower end gasket set...so after all that...its about $234 in parts...give or take 20-30, and bout 3-5 hours of labor...so...my price is around 560-580 depending on how many hours it takes EXACTLY..so depending on the hour rate, and how much the parts are for them to get that sound on the high side but only by a little.

You find someone that will do just an oil pan on a Miata for $100 and I have a job for them. ;)

so your telling me on a honda you cannot just take the oil pan off and then replace using one gasket that goes between the oil pan and the bottom of the block?

lol i CAN, what i AM saying is NAPA(my supplier) does not sell JUST the oil pan gasket, if you want that gasket you HAVE to buy a FULL gasket set. but i am currently trying to get CAR QUEST as a secondary supplier. if i get that set up sooner i will update my previous statement. but as for now i HAVE to buy the FULL set.

Do you need to use a gasket or can you use a RTV type gasket?

Sadly of what they were charging the tech doing the actually work sees probably less than $100 before taxes of it.

I am sure we can find someone to do it for a $100, it just wont be done right, but you said nothing about that.

In the mean time hopefully your " MacGyvered" oil pan holds.

You do realize there are thousands of Honda dealers all over the country that will sell you just the oil pan gasket. The pan comes off the bottom without removing major.

That's exactly what I was thinking..... because I'm pretty sure Napa is not the only supplier of an oil pan gasket for a 97 Honda civic.... and the price of gaskets just from a quick google search are anywhere from like 10 to 20 dollars.... and it seems like a pretty strait forward job, though I don't know very much about the oil pan on a 97 civic.

So I'm thinking,
1.) front brake pads... $40
2.) oil pan gasket... $20
3.) air filter... $15
4.) PB blaster and all that good stuff.... lets just say $20

:dunno: :dunno:
