View Full Version : 6 puck clutch disk or heavier pressure plate?

Ok, so it looks like I need a clutch that can hold more power. However, I'm interested in daily drivability. The ACT HD I have is rated at 268 lbs Torque.
If I keep my very slippable fiber clutch disk and add an "XT" pressure plate my torque capacity will increase to 334ft/lbs, and the clamp load increases to 75% from 34% over stock. If I go with the sprung six-puck clutch disk and keep my HD pressure plate, torque capacity goes to 343fl/lbs, with no increase in pedal effort, but much less slippability.
What do you guys, and gals, think?

For everyday use, I'd stay with a disk opposed to a puck setup. An old friend of mine had a 6-puck in her car and it was pretty much an on/off switch. Not very fun sitting in traffic.

The other consideration is if the puck clutch is sprung or non-sprung. The sprung version is a lot better on the street whereas the non-sprung is like what Steve said, an on/off switch. The most liveable on the street is a disc, but if it can't withstand your power requirements, you do what you have to do.

I'm using a sprung 6 puck with cerametallic pucks and whatever the stiffest ACT pp is for a 1.8 Miata. Definitely locks up quicker than any full organic disk, but it's far cry from a solid hub puck. I also had a double spring PP in a 1.6 ITA Miata (~105rwhp) and it grabbed way worse that the sprung 6 puck I have now.

Looks like it is one step closer to becoming a "track only" car. YEAH!!

I find a heavy pressure plate more livable than a puck clutch. I wouldn't want to drive Rob's car in traffic... I don't think Rob does either, and that's why he works from home. ;)

yi got a stage 4 comp clutch and pressure plate and i will say its a on off switch and a total bish in traffic but i love that dam thing i could pull a boat if my miata could and it wouldnt slip

Ben has a point. I haven't commuted in 17 years, so I really have no idea what real world driving in ATL is like. ;)

I have an EBC greenstuff clutch and it is of the stiff PP variety but the engagement isn't too bad and it is slippable and does not chatter.

I drove Mike's old car(Green NB) with a puck clutch and it wasn't that bad. It took some getting use to, but had a little give.
Basically, if you want full streetability , try and find a full disk with a decent PP. To high of a PP and Daily driving it going to suck. Try sitting in stop and go traffic with a super super high PP, and you leg will start to give out. Had that issue with my eclipse.
Other wise, find a good sprung(has to be sprung) puck clutch.

Is this on a bike or ATV? EBC makes clutches for those, but not for cars. EBC Green Stuffs are brake pads.

Yeah, my white miata and my green Miata both had 3-puck unsprung with a light PP... it's wasn't that bad  I got used to it, but it did require getting it just right when sitting in traffic. I think you'd be fine with a 6-puck and your current PP.

my traffick idea is i just leave a bunch on space and cost as slowly as possible in frist gear to i dont have to completly stop if i can keep from it

Yeah, George's car is quite the beast. I need to go check out this new clutch! Hey Marty.... Are you right here in Dunwoody, too?

Marty lives right around the corner from the liquor store.
As far as the clutch goes, I installed the 6-puck sprung disk. ACT had not yet produced the XT pressure plate for my car, and as I didn't want to wait, I bought the 6-puck. $125. Not bad.
I have to say I'm coming to the conclusion that Miata drivers are a bunch of pussies. All these people in m.net telling me how unlivable the 6-puck is. I gotta say it's barely different from the full fiber plate.

LMAO! Glad it's working out. I've had a few different setups, and I've found that if the PP isn't crazy stiff, you can totally live with a 6-puck.
Of course, the ACT 2600 I have in the Mirage right now (with a street disc), feel like I'm pushing a pile of bricks. My left leg is gonna get huge from driving this thing.
