I mean, who would buy one instead of a Phantom?

I agree with the article that the Maybach always seemed to be nothing more than a "gussied up S class". If they had wanted to establish a new brand, they should have launched a car with a totally different appearance than a Mercedes. Would Lexus have been successful had their cars looked exactly like Toyotas (and it is kind of amazing that most of them, save the ES line, don't look like Toyotas since most share platforms). Would Geo Trackers have been such a sweet ride if they looked just like....Chevy Trackers ;)

Anyone not see this coming? I agree with Nick, if you want to be able to look down on your neighbor who drives an S Class, you buy a Bentley, not an S Class with a different hood ornament.

Honestly, I'd probably take a top of the line S class (V12 and bi-turbos say what?) over the normal Bentley. For Maybach money you've gotta go with a Rolls.

Random personal anecdote: My car got booted from the rack at an alignment shop when Tracy McGrady's Maybach showed up, back when I was living in Houston.
