Ok so I have a nice random issue happen today.
I am driving the miata and everything is ok. Ran and did a few earnings I needed. Then as I am driving to the auto parts store I am at a light and the RPM dip real quick and the car about dies, but doesn't and starts to act normal. I didn't think to much about it, and pull into the autoparts store. I am inside for all of 20 mins, getting some oil and junk. Go to start the car and nothing... I got power, and I can hear the fuel pump click on but nothing from the starter.
One of the guys at the store, helped push the car but still couldn't get it to roll start.
Anyone have any ideas??? I am not even hearing a click click from the starter or anything.
update::: 12/08
OK so the problem came back. This time a little different.
Basically saturday night went to go to a local DSM meet get in the car and tick tick tick. So basically I am **** my starter. sunday morning wake up, hope in the car to see if it still doing it, and yep tick tick tick, So I roll the car into the garage and just for **** and giggles try and start the car but this time, nothing just the single tick I get when I rotate the key from on to start. So pull the starter and take it to the auto parts store and it test prefectly fine.
Those leads to tonight. Put the car back together and load and be hold still no start. I now get either the tick tick tick or nothing(just the single tick) . It is kinda random but if I am getting the constant ticks I will keep getting that until I let it sit for a min or so then I may get nothing or I may get the ticks again.
I have tried using a jumper box to see if there was some issue with my battery or battery termials and that didn't change anything cause it still random tick or no tick.
Anyone have any ideas I can try to night or no what is wrong. I am going to walk to the QT to get some smokes so that gives everyone who is still up about 20-25 mins to post up some info or form some questions for me to answer when I get back.
Thanks

I'd say either bad starter, ign. switch, relay, or fuse, but that still doesn't explain your RPM drop, unless that is just completely unrelated .

i have no idea. what gets me is that I had issues before with the starter. This completely out of the blue. Not even a slow start issue or a clicking noise like something is failing.
I am about to bundle up and walk to the car and see if I can **** with it.
Why does it have to be cold out.

Hope you figure it out man.
Cause the weather sucks. The temp. is dropping and it's flurrying right now here.

Check all battery connections and grounds to be sure.
Ignition switch could be wonked...but doesnt really explain RPM dip I dont think.
As Eric said, check relay and see if it clicks when you turn the key too.
Check main 80 amp fuse too. Eliminate all the stupid obvious stuff.

I might be able to give some insight.
Very good chance that it's ECU related. When CCR hacked up the harness by my ECU to install an SAFC, they goofed up the 12v wire to the ECU which when it got hot or there were severe vibrations fro mthe road, the car would cut out and the tech needle would drop down. In my case, I had to re-wire the 12v supply wire and insulate it from vibrations. In my case, the starter would turn over. Do you have a lot of things on your keychain? The added weight of too much stuff on your keys can cause your ignition to take a ****. Something is cutting signal to the ECU...hmmm....
Try juggling the ignition as you turn the key? (and take your car key off and use it by itself)

I have a box of ignition switches too...so if thats the culprit dont buy a $100+ unit from Mazda. ;)

So I just walked the 2 miles in this snowy weather. Got to love this, so for ****s I just tried cranking it and yep, started first try. Not even a stupid pause.

Intermittent starting makes me think you should look real hard at the ignition switch.

It's the ECU port injector switch.

About a year or so ago I replaced the key ignition system. This is the first I have had with this kinda problem.

The key part? or the electrical switch?
Its the electrical switch that goes bad. Often wiggling it around etc when it wont start will suddenly make a difference.

Everything related to the key. I was having problems where I had to wiggly the key which is why I replaced it.

so i rip into my ignition switch this what I found:

not sure if this is my problem or not but since it looks as if it started to try and catch on fire, I would feel safer just to replace that part AGAIN. Since this was swapped back when I swapped the lock out.
Time to PM Kurt

thanks jack.
I didn't think about the work filters. The worse part is that still didn't fix the problem but now I know that part works.
I am getting sound from the relays in the end bay but the start is not engaging. I am starting to run out of ideas on this one.
