I'm thinking about actually competing in the next event rather than driving in Novice, but I can't figure out what class I'd be in. I'm not really interested in being extremely competitive in my class, just looking for the experience and seat time before I'm able to do some engine work and become really competitive.
List of upgrades.
-Tein SS coilovers
-FM Randall Cowl Intake
-FM dual exhaust, just cat back
-thinking about getting a different set of wheels and tires, but for now I've got rp-f1 with street tires
-forgot to add: custom blue painters tape flame job.

If experience is what you want, you should go out to one of the solo practice day, you get tons of seat time

lol well then... looks like I'm screwed.
I'd be up against cars like that #80 csp miata.

 yeah... I've been there before! It's a good benchmark for how to get better though. The only other class I think you may fall in is SSM but I don't think your mods force you in there.

well... I'd only have to improve my time by about 7 seconds... lol that shouldn't be too hard, once I switch my car from daily driver to dedicated for the track. Which I probably wouldn't even mind doing eventually.

Technically the cowl intake isn't legal for SP (or even SM or Prepared, IIRC) due to cutting into the firewall. That said, if you're just running locally, I don't think it'll be a problem. Though you should talk to the guys in class to see if they mind, because it's their call.

I wouldn't mind changing the intake... But would the leftover hole in the firewall be an issue?

Uh, yeah. That's what I was getting at: the hole in the firewall's the issue, not necessarily the intake lol

You can run the 99 in str too, but you will have the same problem with the hole in the firewall. Like amaff said, most people should be cool with it locally.

lol damn. looks like I should just buy an NA.
run it in STR with the street tires just be upfront about the intake hole, if you are competitive and start to trophy then it could be a problem

If I was to weld up the hole would it be a problem anymore?
Sounds like you have about the same prep level as me, so STR would be a good fit. I don't think the other guys in STR would have any issues with the hole in the firewall. I think it would take a big effort to get an NB competitive in the class.

hmmmm I didn't even know there was an STR, all of the PDFs for classification on the SCCA website are from March of 09 and apparently STR started in May so that's probably why I wasn't seeing it... What were your times like on Sunday compared to other cars in STR?

If you're in it for the seat time, you can just run time only until you read up on class rules and make a decision on where you want to go.

I would just go for str for now. Even if you cant outright win it will still push you to do your best. The competition of autocross is what keeps me going.

we dont always have time-only, it was "abused" before

I was about 73 and the best STR was 63. Something about stuffing 255s under a well set up S2000 makes it a challenge. But as others have said, getting seat time and working on getting better each run is what counts.

Well that's true about the 255's, but I believe an MR-S came in second place, he was on 225 rs-3's. Get some 15x8's and those tires and you will have a quick car.
I forgot to add that there are a lot of very fast drivers in the class as well.
But I agree with you. I think it would a good challenge to build an STR miata. And the competition would be top notch.

Alright I'm going to be running STR at the next event. I'm definitely looking forward to building my car up to be competitive, now I just have to make sure that hole in the firewall won't be a problem. I was reading the SCCA rulebook but couldn't find the firewall thing specifically... I'll keep researching.

You'll never find it. If it doesn't say you can cut a hole in the firewall, then you can't cut a hole in your firewall. It's quite simple really. The same way you'll never find anything about adding turbo's in stock class...

lol that is quite simple.... so basically anything it doesn't specifically say I can do.... I can't do.

That's how the SCCA Solo rule book is meant to be interpreted, yes. The rulebook's thick enough as it is. If it were to list ever single thing you *couldn't* do for every class, you'd need a bookshelf for each class lol

 nice. No worries dude, we were all new to this at some point.

AH HAH! I think I found it..... "The existing structure of the car may not be modified for the passage of ducting from the air cleaner to the engine inlet."
bump an antique....
DP/EM without a roll bar on slicks can it be done? just one time?

Won't pass safety, unfortunately. The rule book is very clear on that point
