View Full Version : Drove an Evo VIII

So we've got this decent 2006 Mitsubishi Evo VIII at work, just a standard no-frills model with the rear wiper and carbon fiber rear wing. 35,000 miles on it or thereabouts. Got a chance to drive it today since we were slow and no managers were present. Took it for about a three mile spin through my usual test route, which involves a wickedly bumpy road (for suspension compliance), a straight for acceleration, an on-ramp/off-ramp combo to test handling and car balance, two more straights, and then another on-ramp/off-ramp combo with a final straight and a rapid deceleration to make it into the dealership parking lot.

Started it up, very mild-sounding engine that idled well. I took off down the street nice and slow to give the car a chance to warm up, and went down my suspension compliance road at about 40 MPH. Car was comparable to my Miata with its Konis set to full soft, a decent amount of compliance but hints of something far more powerful underneath. Rattled a bit, something was loose in the back. Got onto my first straight and gave it the go in third. The engine revved up, I heard an electronic beep, and suddenly I was shoved very hard into my seat. Once more under control I did my on/off ramp combo, noticing that understeer was seemingly nonexistent and the car felt very balanced on the throttle, with throttle modulation altering the car's pitch in a very non-dramatic manner. A short burst in third and I was soon flying up the off-ramp, once again in complete control and balanced.

The acceleration in first, second, and third gear was addictive, yet the car remained civil when I used part-throttle. At all times I heard the electronic beep, followed by a massive rush of power and the feeling that I would be in the back seat if my seatback gave way. On my second on/off ramp combo I had to come to a stop at the bottom of the on-ramp for an oncoming car, giving me a chance to test full throttle acceleration from a dead stop. Betraying my FWD/RWD driving career, the poor car fell flat on its face at first, but it soon made up for my inadequate throttle on launch and hurled itself forward with rocketlike gusto. I flew up the off-ramp at 60 MPH (posted 25), with the feeling that there was more in the car if I were willing to chance it.

Downshifting was a little unusual, as I wasn't particularly quick to adapt to the Evo's pedal setup, but the vehicle was very willing to please. The brakes were quite impressive, the traction was overwhelming, and the power was addicting. Much like Pavlov's dog, when I hear that beep I begin to salivate in anticipation of the sudden overwhelming surge of power.

In comparison to my Miata, I noticed a number of things. For one, I felt very uncomfortable driving a car so fast with that much headroom. It may sound odd, but I've associated fast driving with my hair touching the roof of the car, so being in the Evo with about four to five inches of headroom was very disconcerting. The seat was very pleasantly bolstered and felt very supportive and properly sporty, and the sensation of shifting gears was incredibly satisfying. I know the Miata gearbox gets a lot of praise for shifting, but this was masterful. The same solidity of feeling as the Miata but no notchy sensation at all.

Handling "at the limit", or as close as I was willing to get in a $26,000 car that didn't belong to me, felt very interesting if somewhat boring. It had the prowess of the Miata, possibly with a little less understeer (I have the Racing Beat 1.125" front bar and stock rear bar), but it felt like it's "knife edge", if you will, was really the concave side of a spoon. I felt like as I pushed harder and harder the car became stuck in a very stable trench, doing exactly what was asked of it without fear of losing control. The Miata, in comparison, can be put on the knife edge easily and balances on a fairly sharp edge, with the knowledge that a spin out or understeer will show up if pushed much harder. The Evo kept mum about its ultimate limits, and I didn't have the time (or gas) to explore it further.

All in all I found it to be a very interesting car, very sporting, very powerful, and very capable... but slightly boring. I've heard the STi is a bit more unruly, so I'm going to try and find one I can test out. Truth be told I enjoy the cars that are a little bit unrefined. I roared with laughter when I drove an SRT-4 simply because of its butt-kicking turbo and ridiculous torque steer, but the Evo had me simply in awe of its power. A superior car, but it needs just a touch of wild hair up its *** to keep me lusting after it.

--- Just been informed, an '06 model is actually an Evo IX. Silly me.

That has to do a lot with to with the sti having more troque and horsepower from the factory but the evo is said to handle better from the factory.

Yeah I know, but I just liked the STI more overall.

Personally i'm not a FAN of either.

I don't mind the styling of the evo 8 and 9. I can't stand the styling of the new evo X. I still love the old old evo 3 and 4.

Actually the problem is rooted all the way back to WWII with their plane they called Zeroes. As in Zero clue about styling.

That's funny that this thread has come up as I'm currently looking to get an EVO; trading the S in on one. :)

I've driven both the STi and the EVO and although I feel that the quality of the STi is better, from a performance aspect, I would go with an EVO.

I know I know....here's my list...

EVO X
90-95 NSX
2007 Subaru Legacy Spec B
350Z

There are more but those are the main ones. LB wasn't a fan of the EVO till I test drove one.

I vote NSX. :D

If I buy another 2-seater then I will sell the Miata as I will still want something with four doors and more room.

please not the evo X. I am sorry but the styling just sucks. That and you can find a clean used evo 8 or 9 for really good prices now days.

You know, voicing your opinion about what you like and dislike in a car is cool, it's what shows that we are all different in our tastes, but telling someone not to get a car because of what you think is ridiculous. Plain and simple. I'm not trying to come across as a dick, but I've read a dozen or so threads this weekend on various forums where someone has asked for pros and cons about a car they are considering and the majority of the responses have nothing to do with the facts or opinions about the car, but what the poster feels the OP should do.
It's one thing to say, "The car just does not have enough power" or "I do not appreciate the styling", but saying "Don't get this car because it sucks" is not worth the post. I'm pretty sure that the person considering the car is not wasting their time on something they don't like.

I like the 350Z.... I like the 240Z more, but the 350Z is pretty cool. If the 370Z was lighter than the 350Z like IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE.... I'd like it more.

I vote Evo, mostly so you'll have a four door and won't sell the Miata.

Between the Evo and the STi though, STi all the way, but I think I saw that that had already been ruled out...

But as Simon said, the 350z just isn't all that good at any particular thing. They handle alright, they're quick enough, they look ok, but...in the same price range you can get something that really excels at everything, and has more doors. :p

Which makes me wonder why people ask opinions on forums to begin with. ;)
If I know a car and like a car, I buy it. I dont ask anyones opinion. :)

Now..as far as the cars discussed, I wouldnt buy any of them.
The Evo is butass ugly...plus Mitsus are notorious crap for reliability.
Among the worst of the worst. I have owned them. I never will again.
The Subie doesnt trip my trigger either...although some of them are 'okay'.
My dad has bought brand new Subies since the 70s and I will say I would sooner buy
one then ANY Mitsucrapshi ever made. Period.
A 350 is a kind of a **** pile IMHO too. I helped a spoiled rich kid buy a brand new one, saved him 5G in the process. We then spent a year or two driving it and making runs to the dealer for all the freakin problems it had...several of which never went away. It was finally dumped after 30k agonizing miles.
The engine was fine...it was the rest of the car that was crap.
In terms of styling I would wayyyyy sooner get the Infinity version of that car.
Much better looking!!

Soooooo of those three choices I guess it would be a Subie...or keep looking.
Most likely the latter.

But of course...these are just my opinions...and dont matter much.

Most of the time threads like that are hopefully geared toward people that have owned or do own what they are considering. To get pros/cons and to see if there are any issues that they may have overlooked in their newness to the vehicle. I just got fed up with pointless opinion posts there for a minute. I'm good now.

I think many times the questions are flawed....leading to all the pointless answers and opinions...such as polls as whether I should get car A, B, or C etc etc, or who likes which car and too non specific in nature. If I have decided I like car make XYZ model 321 but am unsure as to some reliability issue or other question, I log onto the appropriate forum and ask very specific questions and try to gather info and draw conclusions from that. But even then, if one has already decided they want it and are getting that car no matter what...then whats the point?
I think many times people are looking for attention...or a pat on the back or for others to tell them theyre 'making a great choice' etc and IMHO such questions deserve whatever answers and opinions they get. ;)

Kurt, I used to like the G35 but a friend of mine has one and has killed it for me. All he talks about is G this, G that and so that's the last thing I'd consider right now.

The looks of the EVO X is a hit or miss for anyone. I will admit, when it first came out, I thought it was hideous but it's grown on me and the more I look at them, the more I like them.

I was a huge fan of the STi till I drove my boss's son's WRX (yes I know, it's not an STi). I drove the car around for a full day and it just felt heavier then the car actually weighted unlike the Evo. At the end of the day, it didn't leave me smiling like the Evo did.

Don't worry, I'm doing as much homework as I can on each vehicle before I purchase anything. Because I rarely keep vehicles for more then a year (the current S is the only one I've had over a year), I'm debating whether I should buy new or slightly used. If I buy new then it will be a car I keep for a couple years as I don't want to become upside down on it.

Therein lies a world of difference between us. :D
I have owned hundreds of cars...however, I usually keep my daily drivers several years...4-6 and/or 100-200k. And I NEVER buy new. Too much money wasted.
Of course I dont get to drive the new car off the lot BUT I am rarely upside down in any vehicle I own....unless I make the mistake of letting my wife buy a car.
More then likely I will either get more then my moneys worth in use OR make money when I get rid of it. But, thats how I roll.

I'ld get an E55 AMG or a CL AMG if you're looking into Benz's.

But Steve you have to drive an Sti. The wrx is not even comparable to how an Sti feels, they're superior in every regard you can imagine; stiffer, brake harder, turn harder, accelerate harder. They're a different class, it's like comparing a civic to your s2000.

Too bad EVO owners have a perception of duchebaggery similar to that of 'Vette owners. (not saying all of them are bad...)
