Ouija <-- That's how it's spelled.

It does work... sorta. It has nothing to do with "spirits" or the dead or anything though.
It's basically just your subconscious (or someone's subconscious) controlling it. So even though everyone may think they're not pushing it someone always is.

I don't believe in ghosts, but I believe in demons. And I definitely wouldn't go around messing with that stuff. I've always been taught to stay away from ouija boards, whether they work or not.

It spells out names of "spirits" or answers yes or no questions. Like Drew said, when you will something on enough you make what are called "ideomotor" movements, which can range from minute pushing movements to full scale table moving. It comes at a point where your willing something on so much due to belief that you'll actually start exerting force without any knowledge of doing so. It's particularly apparent with Ouija boards because the people who pick them up are already primed for something paranormal or unexplained, so they're very susceptible to the idea that something else is causing these movements.
The best way to demonstrate this is with the pendulum trick. Hold a piece of string with a weight attached to the bottom of it. Stand straight up and hold it at the end of your fingers and focus on nothing but willing the pendulum to swing in a left to right motion. Gradually you'll start swinging it without thinking you're even controlling it. Then after a while focus on moving it in a circular motion, think of nothing else but moving it clockwise. Then you can even switch it up and focus on getting it counter clockwise.
Now it won't work if you go into it thinking it won't work etc. But if you genuinely focus on it, it does work. The power of the subconscious is very interesting.

This fella Derren Brown is an amazing individual who mixes psychological knowledge, conjuring skills and all around magician showmanship to produce some very impressive results. I can find myself watching his programs for hours. I especially like the part that he always makes the point that he hasn't got any special paranormal abilities and it's all all about knowledge.

This one is also very good. He creates a fake religious persona and does some impressive stuff.

They've got them on Amazon too, for about $15, but that's made by Fisher Price. Who knows what you'll get with that one.

i dont know if anyone has said this but people that talk like they know all about Ouija boards always say that they will open doors that you cant close. this is all what i hear, not believe but, they say if you invite a "spirit" or "demon" into your house, they wont leave and cause you problems. also ive seen those ghost hunter type shows and they always ask in an interview if they've ever used an Ouija board, and they try to say that it can follow you through your life and cause gho0o0ost infestations no matter where you live.
thats what those loonies believe. i used to.. but man, come on. the only ghost i believe in is the Holy Ghost.

That is a very smart idea. I have meet a few people that follow non-standard reglions(not cults, but pagens etc etc) and almost all will say that opening doors like that isn't smart unless your willing to fully accept what is on the other side.
Granted 90% of them will tell you Ouija boards are a joke, like Jack said; but, the best warning I every got from one of my pagen friends was this: "Asking for spirts to enter into your life/home/etc is like asking some stranger off the street into you house. You never know if they will just sit down and have tea with you, or if they will murder you and take you for everything. One wouldn't do something so stupid like that, so why ask for an unknown force to enter into your life."

Agreed, if you have any belief or think this stuff could happen then steer clear because like I said, if you make yourself susceptible to these things in mind, then things can happen in life. The brain is an extremely powerful and not fully understood tool.
