...and cracked a Flyin Miata/BEGi cast iron turbo manifold. Never really heard of someone managing to crack one of these before. On occaion I have seen some Greddy and AVO manifolds get cracks because of the lack of relief cuts (thermal expansion). But the FM has them designed into the manifold. I did call FM and as expected it's out of warranty. So now i'm waiting a call back from Keith or Bill for special pricing on one of their new manifolds since they don't carry this one anymore. Unfortunatly they don't have any in stock at the moment :(

edit::: stupid internet:::
You are a FM 2 or Fm3 kit??

FMII... the cast iron mani that FM was sharing from BEGi, but BEGi still sells this manifold... FM has gone to the new shorty tubular style manifold.

I hope that you reminded them that you drive a FM catalog car.
Bill is kind of a ******, so don't expect too much. A BEGi cast manifold with 10 mm hardware might be a good option.

PPFs are cheaper...I dont know why you switched to breaking manifolds. :D

As I told him, I think Miatas hate him.
My girlfriend says that Miata is Japanese for "Disaster". lol
Also Mike, BEGi doesn't use that design anymore. They've gone with a new "directed pulse" design that is very nice. I have a brand new one that I'll bring up tonight when we meet up so you can see it. It keeps everything in the same location (maybe +/- a mm or 2), so it's compatible with the FMII stuff.

Well, I talked to Keith and told him who I was and he remember me and the car very well.... they also pulled up my car by the PO's name and know everything that's on that car. If they want something ridiculous for the new mani, i'll call BEGi.

OK, so just got off the phone wil Bill @ FM. I'm getting one of the new design manifolds..and they're going to drill/tap it for 10mm hardware and include new 10mm hardware for $425 shipped. So that'll be here soon and now i'll need to either order my 2871 or tap my current turbo for the 10mm studs.... but it's sounding like i'll be getting the 2871.
w00t.
Here is what the new manifold will look like

That's only a little less than their normal price on that manifold. But it includes shipping, so not too bad.
Now I've gotta change my setup... Was trying to have a different turbo system than anyone local. lol

Wow, expensive. Bell's full price is just a little more.
I would have asked for a better discount. Their foundry is in India if memory serves, so their per unit cost is going to be very low.

Bell's log is only $409 + shipping and it already includes 10mm hardware.

The one with EGR bung for 01+ is $450.
I know Hydra can run EGR, but FM does not support it, so it would not matter unless Mike had to pass an OBDII test.
Incidentally, if I had a Hydra, I'd run the 1 or 2 wires and figure out how to get EGR working. Not only would it decrease polution but it would also increase cruise economy.

It ends up being about the same for either one...but something about the new design FM mani seems appealing... it bet it'll help spool a good bit more over what I have now.
Oh, the FM also has provisions for EGR... incase I ever need to put it back on.
Does the 2871 come with the correct hole size for 10mm hardware or am I going to need to have it drilled out?

Oh yeah, always forget they upcharge for the newer cars and EGR.

You will need to have the turbine flange worked for 10mm studs.
Another advantage to BEGi is they will do this for you if you send your turbine.
You're also going to need to seriously port and smooth the internal gate and smooth and blend the gate tube as much as possible.

They had my turbine so that they could ceramic coat it along with the new manifold. They forgot to drill out the holes like I specifically asked for. But they did port the internal wastegate for free, as they advertise they will do.
Mike, I'm going to have to find it, but I read a thread about how the new FM manifold does not work as well as it should because of the runner design. 1 and 4 are facing each other and 2 and 3 are feeding up from the side at a right angle and there is nothing seperating the pulses from each other. Not the best flow characteristics.

What's the problem with the wg that it "needs" to be ported? What happens if I dont? I'm not looking to run crazy high boost or anything. I figure 13/14psi should get me at the power goals I want and be rock solid all day long.

It isn't so much always a problem, but it helps prevent/cure boost creep that is commonly found with internally gated applications. And it helps the exhaust flow more smoothly into the port. Just nice piece of mind, and while you have the turbo off of the car there is no excuse not to do it.
ben91

Others have proven that the 2871 will absolutely creep without the port being opened up and transitions smoothed.

Yeah, so i've decided that i'm probably NOT going to upgrade the turbo at this time. I'll just have the 2560 drilled out for 10mm hardware and while we are doing everything we'll add a 3" exhaust and have the car re-tuned which should be good for a decent bump in spool and a bit more power.

Like I said last night, look to run it a tad richer under boost just for peace of mind (around 12:1). It won't affect anything while you're just driving around, but it will help keep any detonation at bay while boosting. What you said the target AFR is was just a little too lean for comfort.

Well, if i can secure that the exhaust will get done next week, then i'll make an appointment to see Ed over at Balanced.
