So short version is I going to get an older iphone but someone got to it first which started making me wonder about the new 3g versions. So since my At&t account has been available for an upgrade and my family was talking about going paying for part or all of the new 8g iphone, I was wondering what others opinions of the phone are.

So basically..

do you own one, or have you used one
what did you like, what did you dislike.
would you get one.

thanks.

I love my Touch, which is far from the phone, but I'm sure I'd like the phone too. It seems that most peoples problems lie with AT&T and not the iPhone, except for battery life. I remember calling my buddy, his iPhone had a full signal and was sitting next to me, and it was ringing in my ear, but not on the phone. He upgraded when the new version of the phone came out and really seemed to like it a lot more.

a phone is a phone and that's all you should need it to, so if i want internet access and directions i'll get it before i leave my house.

yea I remembered you had the touch. I have heard the new 3g help to fix the signal problem.

I can't remember and I am going to have to look real quick. I remember hearing about phones using local wi-fi to help in areas of weak signal... I want to say it was refered to as edge but I could be wrong.

Is your family currently on a family plan? If so, the iPhone will need to be on it's own plan.

I currently have the 3G iPhone and really like it. I gave Sawyer my 2G iPhone and she seems to be happy with it. Although I must admit, both of ours are jailbroken. :)

If e-mails are important to you, stick with a Blackberry. Although the phone will "push" the messages to you, it's not instantaneous like a BB.

The only gripe I have about the phone is it doesn't have MMS capabilities.

Any questions you have specific that you would like me to answer?

Edge is just the rate of speed for the internet, has nothing to do with the signal.

I am currently on my own plan with at&t so I don't have to worry about either of those problems.

I am not worried about the whole e-mail, as for the internet it is more to search forums when I am sitting and killing time.

So with the lack of MMS, how have you gotten around this issue? Also so you can still send and receive basic text messages?

MeFryRice

You can still send and receive text messages, just not pictures. In order to send a pic, you have to do it via e-mail; ex: recipentphonenumber@mms.att.net (this is only an example).

Have you had an signal issues cause I have heard of people having issues but then my old At&t won't get signal at my old school but my buddies old 2g iphone would get signal.

Thanks

Ugh, this is debatable due to the AT&T. I honestly wouldn't worry about the signal with either 2G or 3G iPhones. If you do get the 3G, make sure you update to firmware 2.1 as you'll get a lot better battery life. :)

Cool. tomorrow I will run by the at&t store and look into everything.

Thanks

I was thinking of getting one for a long time, decided against the contract and the price of it and picked up a Palm Centro for a fraction of the price to keep me going for a while. Well... I'm in love with the thing, it's really surprised me. It's powerful, get great signal and looks cool.

The wifi signal boosting is a T-mobile thing, I was looking at wifi phones almost exclusively thinking it applied to AT/T too, turns out it doesn't.

I would like an iPhone at some point but I'm certainly happy with this little Centro. You can do a lot to it, relatively cheap, good signal and looks cool.

The Centro is a cool little phone but just like the Treos, it's Palm based and tends to free quite often with the more stuff that is downloaded onto the phone.

The iphone is kind of a neat little toy with a good interface, but it's just too expensive and too limited.

I've had treos for a while now. The interface is a bit "cold" compared to the iphone, but it does all the same stuff and it works. The interface is definately better than the crackberries. Except I don't know about the new touch screen crackberry.

There are more and better plans for treo over a variety of carriers, and I have 3 batteries that I can swap myself at anytime. As far as freezing goes, I can count on one hand the number of freezes I've had over probably 4 years now. I do get a random reset about once every 3-4 months though. It's nothing like my friends' Windows Mobile phones they're always *****in about!

About the 3 batteries, I don't really need the extras but original replacement batteries are so cheap on ebay it's crazy not to have them. I keep one in the center console "in case". My charger has the ability to charge 1 loose battery while it's charging the phone, so there's no imposition. Depending on use, I get 2-4 days per charge.

I had the Samsung BlackJack (Windows Mobile) and it was a nightmare. I can't count how many times I wanted to throw it out the window when I was driving. It would consistently freeze to where I'd have to remove the battery to get it to power-down.

In regards to the Treo, I guess it depends on the user. Working for a cell-phone place for 2 years, I've seen my share of issues with the Treo and it always seemed to be the same customers coming back; there were about a dozen of them.

Could have been related to either those specific customers and/or software they were running.

I worked at a IT company where everyone had a treo (that's why I got one) and we collectively did not have any issues. With exception that it was kind of a PITA to get the 600 to work with the exchange server, but then the 650 got activesync which works awesome.

(I might have said this before) - I still have the Edge phone that I've had since it came out - There is no AT&T 3G network in Macon/Middle GA Yet for me to take advantage of upgrading just yet... on 2.x OS I'm still doing almost as much as the 3G model does sans GPS - but I don't need that feature in my phone.... (yet) :)

LB and I used the GPS function on my 3G on our way to Tampa and it worked great. I'm actually pretty impressed by it.

yea the GPS is one of the few features I don't see me using much. Maybe on a road trip, but I tend to like to plan them out and print out really detail directions.

My Garmin GPS is permanently installed on my windshield and not carried in my pocket. :) After I got lost around Deal's Gap in 2006 I decided I wouldn't make any more trips without one.

I used to laugh at those that bought a GPS but I have found myself wanting one as well.
