Eric and I successfully returned from Dallas with my new car!
I bummed a ride to MARTA. Eric picked me up from the West Line terminus and drove us to Birmingham Intl. We caught our flight to Dallas and drove back non stop.
My door-to-door travel time was exactly 23 hours and 44 minutes. Left yesterday at 12.30pm and arrived with the car today at 12.14pm.
I was up yesterday at 5 and have not slept yet, with exception to 30 minutes that I got circa 8am this morning while Eric was behind the wheel.
I'm pretty worn out, but feeling pretty good.

Yeah I know. Car is untuned and runs 10:1. The exhaust tips that were both chrome yesterday are outlined with black today. This of course is a correctable situation.
I put the top down and threw it around the curves up by my house. Even with the ****ty suspension, this little bastard is FUN. But it squats in the back like a puppy taking a leak when you nail it.

Awesome car! I'm really digging how clean the turbo setup is. That recirc hose is probably the straightest I've ever seen! Is it a custom setup or a kit?
Once it's got suspension and rims, that car will be completely badass. Nice score.

That is the BEGI S4 turbo kit.

Damn that's a lot of squat in the shocker pic.
Thanks for the pics man! Your camera is impressive.
I didn't know if you noticed or not when driving, but when I was driving this morning I was thinking to myself how nice the windshield was for a 10 year old car. I also thought the blue tint stripe wasn't standard, but the windshield has all the factory markings on it, so I just assumed that it came with the 10AE and I hadn't noticed previously. Well, in the box o receipts in the trunk was a $1000 invoice for the new blue tint strip windshield. The box also had a factory service manual, maintence and oil change log for the past 40K with all receipts, and all the invoices for the aftermarket parts and installation labor. Most everything is new from September and October 08. Looks like the turbo has 2K miles on it including the 800+ mile trip home. Waterpump, timing belt, pulleys, and associated seals are 10K old.
Also have 2 keys, including the original blue one.
No owner's manual, but they're a lot easier to come by than a FSM is.

ben91

Thanks. No issues per say. But it does have a couple exhaust leaks and issues, such as what feels like the midpipe contacting the body or cross brace. Car has a lot of potential.

ben91
11-16-2008, 07:21 PM
It's really not that bad. The car had just come down and wasn't moved yet, so the suspension was still extended a bit. I drove it into the garage after that pic and it came down several inches.
Just pulled a tape real quick and the rears are ~14" from fender to wheel center. But I wouldn't be surprised if the car can settle down another 1/4-3/8". So yeah with the Teins and another 1-1.5" drop it will be baller. Isn't 12.5" pretty standard fender to wheel center? I'll measure the other car tomorrow; it's cold now.
RotorNutFD3S
11-17-2008, 02:05 AM
Ah, makes more sense.
Can I come drive it again? :) It was so nice...
ben91
11-17-2008, 08:01 AM
Silver car is 12 3/8" fender to wheel center rear and 12 1/4" front.
Blue car is still at 14" rear, but it has not moved again. So a drop of 1 1/4" or so is all I'll want for the blue car.
Can't wait to get the exhaust contact issue sorted so it will drive smooooth

Did you change the hardtop latches to make it fit properly?
ben91
11-17-2008, 03:14 PM
I had to remove the side latches and add frankenstein bolts.
The chrome thingies that grab the f'stein bolts need to be adjusted some more. Fitment is ok but not great w/o the side latches.
I need to check out the rear defroster. Just remembered.
RotorNutFD3S

Passed emissions today.
Car is very quick with the 8" wheels. It does not pull as hard as the 91 does, but it starts pulling 2000 rpm sooner. So it's probably faster from a dig, but I don't know.
metalman
11-18-2008, 02:45 PM
It might be as fast or faster without feeling like it too. :)
I have run into that with muscle cars...my buddies 442 w/455 felt lots faster then my Dodge R/T w/440...but when run against each other my car ate his for lunch. In that case it had to do with two things...power delivery..and suspension squat.
RotorNutFD3S
11-18-2008, 02:56 PM
So how did you get it to pass? Had to adjust settings so the CEL would stop illuminating?

In that case it had to do with two things...power delivery..and suspension squat. The blue car may very well be faster than the silver car from a standing start. But both cars have different transmissions and final drives, so it's hard to know. I would imagine the sliver car being faster than the blue car from a roll from any decent speed.
Of course the blue car has a lot of untapped potential being untuned and not running any boost control.
With equal tires, I'd bet on my dad's 442 being faster in a drag than either.
ben91
11-18-2008, 03:29 PM
So how did you get it to pass? Had to adjust settings so the CEL would stop illuminating?I did what BEGi said, which was set all the timing adjustment cells in vac to 0 so that the Xede did not alter stock timing at all in vacuum. Worked.
The MIL was coming on because the PCM's overly agressive misfire detection system confused the Xede's timing adjustment with a misfire. Hence why we got code P0300, which is non cylinder specific misfire. An actual misfire (1) would be felt and (2) would register as cylinder specific, IE P0301 for cylinder 1, P0302 for cylinder 2, and so on.
The Xede's timing adjustment map is only set at 17x17 and is user adjustable up to 20x20. So I'll just bump it up to maybe 19x19, adding 2 rows of vacuum adjustment and 2 extra RPM breaks in the 3500 rpm range. I'll repopulate the map based off what was stored in it when I got the car, but make the adjustments in vac much smoother in the area that was causing the CEL to illuminate which was 15-10" vac and appx 3500 rpm. That very well may satisfy the misfire detection circuit completely. Or it may simply waste a little bit of my time. Assuming the later, it means that annually I'll have to clear the code and reset all the vac cells to 0 before the OBD test. If so, so be it.

Figure a Xede would work well on a supercharged NB application? :)

11-18-2008, 03:47 PM
I'm really not as familiar and comfortable with it yet as I would like to be, so I'd hesitate to make a recommendation as of yet. That being said, I don't have any reason to NOT recommend it. It does seem to work fine. Interface is a little bit quirky, but I've not used any EM software that was not.
Because of the $$$$, I'd probably first look at something like the BEGi zoom3 or AEM (whatever AEM is calling their piggy) though since I'm guessing something wussy like a JRSC and a good bit under 200 whp.

Yep, that's why I asked to see them again. I was impressed, brighter than I thought they'd be. It would be one of those situations where I'd have to try a set out to see what I really think. I got the apexcone from ddm tuning after reading a lot of positive reviews. they are us based and their prices are good, but the wait was pretty long. almost a month. I like the kit, seems like good quality. the balasts are smaller than the ebay ching chong jobbers I had in the silver car, but what I really like is the small-ish ballasts do not require the outboard pita power supplies you usually see with the uber small ballasts.also got a hi/lo set for my wagon. if I get a chance they'll go in this weekend.blue lamps are for ricers and hid usually isn't great in foglamps.I has reverse LEDs, they are decent. This exhaust is kind of deep at idle and under cruise. Not loud at all, no drone, but certainly not silent. But when you get on the car, instead of being real deep, it gets higher in pitch. Sounds like a race car. It's blown away everyone who's been in the car with me.

New dyno? What happened to their old one?

Certainly a fun car and the new exhaust sounds brilliant, it doesn't sound like just another turbo exhaust.
Only 265 to the wheels??? My N/A breaks the straps on dynos...and thats not holding the gas pedal all the way down. Geez 265...

New dyno? What happened to their old one? They got 1 pair of 1500hp axle pod dynos instead of the 2 pair of 500hp/axle pods they had before. Lost AWD capability (don't think it was ever used anyway), but got the ability to handle big power.

Holla!
http://www.mx5atlanta.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1828&stc=1&d=1250807564
A trip to Greenville netted me this front bumper skin to go with my lower lip. I also picked up the fender liners that I read are required for the bumper swap and a 15" spare to fit under the new brakes.
I already have a msm rear bumper lip, but I think I'm decided on not running it.

I picked up an 04 MSM bumper skin today. I already had the lip and splitter. I kind of don't like the lip w/o the splitter, but after seeing LB's in person... I was sold on it.

I'm kind of thinking about one of those ChaserAero hoods too. So I might need to wait until the hood is ready and drop it all of at one time.

Which version?

08-20-2009, 06:38 PM
Last I looked, they were doing the first 40 of this one at $200 FRP or $300CF plus shipping. Kicker is another local guy is signed up for one so we could split the shipping, assuming everything is still going through...
(this is a photoshop of what it's expected to look like)

Ah, their "Scoote" Hood. Nice! Had the Scoot hood on my RX7, had the inlet in the middle. The extraction was very functional.
ben91
08-20-2009, 06:46 PM
Extractor placements are not 100% aerodynamically ideal on this version, but certainly should provide an improvement from the stock bottleneck. Not bad for $400 delivered in CF.
Cool thing about any NB w NB2 headlamps and BEGi-style cool air iso box is there's a nifty intake port in the frame behind the headlamp.

Car runs nice.
Trying to get the EGO correction to mimic OEM as closely as possible. On the interstate I don't have any issues, but slow speed and idling will walk the short term fuel trims, which will then walk the long term fuel trims. When the LTFT gets to their max adjustment, it pops a CEL. I am hoping that getting sequential fueling to work will help minimize the problem. I never fully expect it to go away, but also I don't need it to. Emissions only comes 1 time per year, and I have the entire month previous so that actually gives me a very big window to get it through the inspection.
BTW, making the car run like stock is neither good for best power nor best economy. Really, the government fails when pertaining to this kind of stuff.

Low emissions and high fuel economy are two very different metrics.

My poor car has been sitting alone in the cold garage, untouched, unstarted, and unloved for 3 weeks. So I bought her some presents:
MSM center console
MSM door panels
I also found my knobmeister engraved voodoo knob in the garage. Haven't seen it in over a year.
To celebrate, I started her up and let her idle in the driveway. Battery was a little bit weak, but it cranked and fired right up.
In a few weeks, I'll need to pick up a new soft top. Want to wait for it to warm up some more for the job.

how is the PnP? can you drive the car?
ben91
02-07-2010, 09:56 AM
I drove it to Orlando in December. It was on the dyno the week before that, but I had a mechanical issue that was not the fault of the MegaSquirt. Made 240-something on the dynapack, but that was before getting all the fuel out and any timing in. Had unrelated boost control problems too. Dang internal wastegate.
Also did the Polar Bear run last month. I've not had any problems related to engine managment.
The car is reliable to go anywhere. The only reason I've not been driving it recently is due to poor weather. I want to drive it badly, as I've not gone anywhere with the Flex.
I also still need to install my new diff.

Fully dressed 10AE plus turbo and goodies:
FL 600 FR 640
RL 623 RR 535
Total: 2398 lbs
That's top up, 3/4 tank of gas, and everything in the car that would normally be there when I drive it (stuff in glove box, tools, spare & jack in trunk, etc).

It has been 2 months since I took the 10AE out of the garage, so I decided it was time (literally) to brush the cob webs off. What a nice car. Poor thing, has only been driven 2000 miles this year.
