Son wants a bass electric guitar for xmas. Looking for a used name brand in about a $250-300 range. If you have one and are looking for Miata parts to trade let me know.

I have just about everything for a NA and some NB drivetrain parts. What are you looking for? What kind of guitar do you have?

I work in a music store so I can probably get you one at cost. Do you have a specific brand or type in mind?

I know nothing about bass guitars other than some brand names such as Peavey or Fender, and what I read on wikipedia. Since he's 10 I guess a 4 string would be right??

Yeah, a four string would be best for him to start. You'll also need an amp, a strap, and a cable.
We sell Ibanez bass packs with all that for 299 but I could get it for you for 175-200. If you do find a used one let me know cause often used guitars have been sitting so long the necks are out of whack and the strings are shot. So if you get one I'll throw new strings on it and make sure it's set up properly. Since he's ten a bass that's not setup will do more harm then good when he tries to play it as it will destroy his fingers.
I'm currently in the process of doing a coolant reroute so if you have anything that will help that I'll do the setup and restring for free (on a 4 string bass we usually charge about 50 plus the price of strings ($25-30)).
If you have anymore questions let me know :)

Squier is a good option for a 10 yo... I think they even make a Jr. size. and small bass amp combo right around $250/300

I can also get the squire packs. I wouldn't recommend the Jr (the build quality is crap) but the Jazz Bass packs would be better because it has a smaller neck that would fit his hands better.

Awesome. Thanks!
We have an amp from when he wanted an electric guitar when he was 8. I don't have anything specifc for a coolant reroute but I do have both NA and NB thermostate housings/manifolds and I have a mixing manifold and pipe you could use as as parts. There are several writeups on the net, Miataforum and this old one --> http://www.solomiata.com/CoolantReroute.html

If the amp is for a regular guitar I wouldn't use it for a bass. Regular guitar amps are made to only replicate the sounds of a guitar, they just don't go low enough for a bass. It's possible to do it but the amp won't last long.
However you could probably post the guitar amp on craiglist and get a decent trade for a bass amp.

Good to know. I will do some research this weekend and likely contact you for a buy on one of your new kits next week.
Thanks,

Scott, MODScotty, was selling a really nice bass a while ago, you should PM him.

I have an Ibanez but I have an NB and think I'm pretty good on drivetrain parts. I would go with one of the Ibanez kits for 299. If he's talking about the same thing you get a pretty decent Ibanez 4 string, an amp, case, and digital tuner.
