Here's the dyno for those who didn't see it. This was where we first started to see some knock on 93 octane so we stopped there. It still had plenty of fuel available and the LS2 coils were putting out more than enough spark. Probably could have seen some more but we had the knock limit set conservative and once it crossed 400whp I was happy. Some C16 or even 100 octane and 430-440 would be fine before the turbo would be running out of steam. Its a fun car to say the least, so far with the 4.3 rear it topped out a little over 150 mph due to the 8k redline. Now with the new tranny and 3.9 it should be capable of closer to 165-170.

The R33 and the Miata are both owned by the same guy. I'm almost done with the GTR, with the new motor I built it should net a conservative 550-600whp. Its not a full on race car like the Miata but its build list is more impressive. Its a true Motorex car so its worth some coin. Here's just a few pics of it, the blue S15 is his wife's car, Lee's aunt. His garage can truly be called a stable. I built all these and his wife and sons DD's are 99 miatas with intercooled JRSC's with smaller nose pulleys and the crank overlay, not to mention plenty of other crap. She takes hers to the track with us every time we go, its got many of the same parts the silver one has, just kept more streetable, his son runs the silver miata since he's got a supercharged Elise to run.

I'm kinda suprised you guys haven't stuck a GV style bumper on there to increase airflow to the heat exchangers and to reduce aerodynamic drag on the front wheels and to reduce undercar airflow. Beast of a setup though. Good to finally see the Skyrine coming together.

Its still a work in progress. Remember we had the NoPro widebody kit sitting upstairs forever. I wanted to put that thing on so bad but Tripper hates fiberglass parts, yet the Nismo kit on the R33 is glass and so is the Do-luck widebody on the S15, hell the whole Elise is fiberglass. I never understood it but that thing got sold ealier this year. That would have solved quite a few of my problems with airflow and tire clearance in one step.

Thought maybe you spooled a tad late, then I saw the anti-surge housing They sure do look cool though (and I know that it really doesn't matter on the track)
What's up with your coolant reroute? It looks like you have coolant coming out from both the front and the back of the head? Dual t'stats?
Nothing fancy in the head, just cams/valves/springs?
Oh, and that's a Bell S5 set up. I've got the S4, which is the tubular mani, and sadly not provisioned for EWG. :(

I believe its mostly the cams that causes it to spool a bit late. The head itself is stock, no porting. With the antisurge ports I can set the BOV tight so if you just come off the gas a bit in a corner it won't blow off so it keeps the pipes pressurized so it gets much better response coming off a corner. Its easier to get the car to rotate as well since it responds so much faster. With 8k to play with every shift keeps it above 5k so its always pulling hard. It has 2 t'stats, 160 in the rear and 195 up front. That causes the bulk of the coolant to go out the back and when it gets too hot up front some will dump out there to keep it even. That's why I used the Protege head gasket, its got all the coolant holes open since its designed for a rear coolant outlet.

Got ya. I'm on a similar path as you and have the T2 flanged GT3071r targeted as the turbo to get. I have seen high boost street cars run dual BOVs, a large flow set tight and a low flow set loose, thought I'd give that a try that if warranted.
Some people have reported very bad experiences with dual thermostats, especially so with different opening temperatures. I'd be kind of scared.

Very impressive, quite possibly a favorite NB of mine now. It's really cool seeing a car like this on our local forum.

this is quite a fun car i have spun this car around a time or two before it had this much power. The r33 is very fun also . I never got to drive this one but the r32 he had before was unbelievable. Also he ( Tripper(my uncle)) owned the yellow skyline in the first Fast and the Furious which was a beautiful car as well. Just so you know the Silvia and the R33 are for sale.

Its worked great for me so far. I think the main problem most people have is with the head gasket. If you do the reroute and use the Miata gasket the front cylinders in the head are going to never get proper flow and over heat. With the Protege gasket the coolant is run straight up from the block to the head around each cylinder and then out the back. The front one is just there for when the front cylinders get to hot since they will get less flow than the rear. That one just pulls a bit of coolant to keep the flow around cylinder one going.

I'm curious about the Protege gasket. When I rebuilt my engine, I ordered an OEM Miata head gasket and none of the necessary passages between the head and block were blocked by the gasket. :dunno:

Hey Ryan, with the PPF brace, did you notice any difference in ease of shifting at high rpm, higher gear shifting? I've noticed I have a problem making quicker shifts into 5th and 6th when standing on the throttle on the track and i'm wondering if something like that PPF brace will help...maybe even the Beatrush rear subframe-diff brace too.

Its made by DEI and summit carries it. I forget the name though. I've got about half a sheet left that I'm not gonna use. Its kinda expensive but it works quite well.

That thing went on so long ago I can't really say. It was only running a stock JRSC at the time as well.

I've seen 2 Miata setups. The main one from Felpro and I believe the OEM has smaller holes than the Protege gasket and the holes between 2-3 are blocked.

Interesting. I'm wondering what part I got then, the gasket is from Finishline, it's a Mazda part, but the holes are all there (compared against the block and the head, because what good is a hole in the block and gasket when there's no passage in the head for it?) and none of them are undersized.

Always check your holes. :naughty: Seriously- I was putting together an engine for a race (at 11pm and we still had a 10+ hour drive) and was going over a Mazda mls head gasket only to find one of the oiling holes still had a knock-out stuck in it. Imagine getting the entire thing together with a bad head gasket. Ouch.

It sounds like you got the Protege gasket. The size difference of the holes is minimal, I only ever notice when I set them side by side. It looks like the Protege is smaller but I never measured it but the blocked holes are obvious. The blocked holes are necessary to direct coolant to the back of the motor and then back forward through the head. If none of the holes are blocked the rear of the motor will get less flow.

Or a more even flow on a rear-rerouted setup, nothing can get out the front.
Also, I just did a check, part# BP26-10-271 (the gasket from Finishline) is the same OE replacement part number for the 1.8L Miata and Protege.

11-17-2009, 08:43 PM
Well, since the point of the reroute is to cool the #4 cylinder and not the head, something tells me that there shouldn't be a problem for those running Mazda head gaskets. But I understand the added safety margin.
Cool Cat Racing
11-17-2009, 09:59 PM
I thought the one I got was from Mazda but I don't honestly remember. When I set it next to the Felpro NB gasket I had there were obvious differences, wish I'd have taken a pic and remebered which brand. Since the differences were so subtle I'm not sure if its identical to others or not.

Hey Ryan, if you're ever in Thunder and up anywhere close to Atlanta, I'd really love to fit up one of those 16x8 wheels to see if they clear my brakes.... hell, maybe even drive down there and see. Maybe?
Cool Cat Racing
12-31-2009, 11:19 AM
They should. They're 15 offset and easily clear the Wilwoods that are on it. They make them look kind of small actually. There's over an inch of clearance in front of and on top of the calipers. I can fit my whole hand between the caliper facing and the spokes of the wheel. I want to take the car up to the V one time but it will be kinda hard to be swapping wheels there but once you look at the wheels I'm sure you'll know if they'll fit or not.

Eh, if you come up to the V, maybe after you could swing by my place since I'm only 10min outside Atlanta (Brookhaven/Perimeter Mall area)..hell, i'd give you gas money if ya want :D
