Why not just tie a parachute to the rear tow hooks? Works just about as well, and looks cooler!

It causes aerodynamic drag on the air going out the back of the car. How much I don't know, but it really is one of those ":wtf:" parts when you think about it.

It does look kind of cool. I wanted one for appearances' sake, but isn't running something that looks good but lessens functionality the very definition of rice?

The very definition indeed. There are a bunch of cars that do this, and the miata is one for sure. Crown vics are another bad one. In fact, 1 of the police interceptor parts is a flat undertray that prevents air from dragging on the bottom of that rear bumper.

That's a good point, are there any useful rear diffusers for miata?
