Well the build begins on my E36 325is ITR car....

As some of you know, I picked the car up from San Francisco and drove it back. After getting the car back, it wasnt but a week and stuff started coming out. My plans are to build the car to the Improved Touring rules for ITR. My plans are to have the car ready for Santa Run 09 at little talladega.

I'll start out with what the car looked like when the previous owner had it both new and when I picked it up.

DAY 1- Oct. 13, 2008

So last night Brad (Chummy on IA) and I started taking out the interior. We are taking out the heater core, A/C controls, Radio, speakers, and pretty much anything else that doesn't have to be there.

Sorry for the bad pictures.

Well I got up early this morning and went to take some better pictures of the car. I had to move it over last night for some reason? I'll post more tomorrow after we get more done.

This is what it looks like from last night....

DAY 3 Oct. 16, 2008

So last night Brad and I worked on getting the wires ready to pull out. we went ahead and pulled the fuses out and pulled the wires from the fuse box. We also finished cutting the block off plate out and will be putting it on Friday night.

Nothing really looks different.

Wait... no heat and you're going to drive the car in the middle of the winter??

Looking like progress! But why take the heatercore out when it can be used to help cool the car if need be?

I have a hard time getting the car up to temp as it is. And I will have 2 fans on the car with a BIG radiator so im not worried.

Car looks great....

Better put that heater core back in Matt, you dont have to run coolant through it (aka you can plug it) but per the rules it has to remain on the car with hoses attached

http://www.scca.com/documents/Club%20Rules/ImprovedTouring.pdf

GCR section 9.13

g. Engine coolant fluid, coolant/heater hoses and clamps may be substituted. Heater hoses may be plugged. Heater water control valve(s) may be added or substituted. Heater core and hoses shall not be removed

Looks like a great time, you'll need to just show up to a bmwcca autocross and absolutely blast everyone out of the water.

Just get a sharpie and write Heater Core HAXX0r on the panel you replaced it with. They'll never notice.

Or you could take a piece of cardboard and write Heater Core Stolen, much like people do with their license plates.

heater core is back in the car. hahaha.

I havent got my GCR rule book yet so i was going off what someone said....last time i do that.

The thing i dont get about the heater core is that if it breaks, your legs are getting burnt. Why not allow them to be removed???? ha. oh well.

Everything should be finished with the car by next week then i can have the front half of the cage put in and get her on the track.

Grantri
10-23-2008, 02:26 PM
Dont hook it up!!

The rules allow you to block it off (a good idea for the very reason you mention) but it and the hoses have to be on the car.

We got a little talking to last time through tech. Heater core was never removed during the build , hoses were pulled from the firewall end and plugged there . The rule is the " core and hoses may not be removed" so since they were still on the car and in place by our interpretation all was well. Tech scrutineer saw it differently and told us the hoses can (and should ) be blocked off but they had to be connected on both ends , no DQ or anything and it was easier to make him happy than to argue rules with him.

why would a heater core burst like you guys are saying?? i have NEVER seen or even heard of one bursting, only leaking slowly.

The GCR is online. I still fail to see how you don't have a copy of the rules yet. You're going to end up like the "Street Mod" civic hatch that showed up last event fully gutted with no roof...

you would have to get in one hell of a wreck to cause your heater core to burst...

Yeah, I was heavily critical until I thought it over. At least he was actually at an autocross. Even though his car was ****, he actually took it to a driving event, something that's alot more than can be said about most of the **** that will have gathered in Gwinnett tonight.

I completely agree, but being a dick and saying "I can do it because the rules don't say I can't do it" kind of kills it for me.

Direct effing quote. I can't make this **** up lol

jesse writes

"you would have to get in one hell of a wreck to cause your heater core to burst... "

True dat, but depending on the car and the impact it might be possible for the engine to move back far enough to deform the firewall enough to cause the heater core to spew. We took a wallop into the inside turn 1 wall that bent everthing (and I mean everything except the left rear shock!) under that car.

Though it is an unlikely scenario if its me risking a scalding its a no brainer to keep the boiling hot pressurized liquid out of the cabin ,not to mention that fact that its usually pretty hot inside a race car anyway

Oh he was acting like a smart *** about it? He's hardly in a position to do tha considering how much of his life he wasted on the car.

Yeah. Dave Hardy and I forget who else approached him about the car and asked about him running street mod in a civic hatch that was, well, hatchless (and roofless), and the response was something to the effect of "The rules don't say I can't..."

They also don't say you CAN'T run an aftermarket turbo in stock class, but whatever.

My favorite part were the 'adjustable' side skirts and front spoiler. Actually, that's not true... and here's what I don't understand about a BUNCH of folks who modify cars. Why put all that time and money under the hood and on the suspension, and then throw $20 tires on it!? I mean, it pretty much makes everything else you've done uesless! Ugh.
