I need a roll bar for my 97. Just signed up for the Turkey Trot @ Road Atlanta in November and need to get legal for this event. Cheap is good.
Also looks like I need to find a SA2000 or better auto racing helmet. I can't believe they won't let me use a $400 Shoei motorcycle helmet.
I am walking about 3' off the ground thinking about this event!!

That will most likely not pass. Odds are it will have to be an SCCA certified roll bar.
This is what you'll need...

When it comes to helmets... M rated helmets are not built to with stain heat from a fire. also SA rated helmets offer tons more protection then an M rated helmet. For good deals on helmets, this is where I got mine.

FYI A helmet is not a place I would recommend trying to skimp on to save money. If you spent $400 on a M rated helmet spend that much on an SA, then sell the M because the SA provides much more protection.

The Boss Frog Double Hoop passes SCCA approval.
I just looked it up and the Deuce will not pass. Sorry.

A quick 101 education on helmets. My understanding is that SA helmets are for cars and designed for a frontal impact and fire protection. M helmets are for motorcycles and designed for side impacts. The price you pay makes no difference, its the design.

Info from Soloracer.com
"
HELMET RATINGS...WHAT DO THEY MEAN?
Snell SA Rated Helmets:
Snell "SA" (Sports Application) rated professional helmets are designed for auto racing and provide extreme impact resistance and higher fire protection.
Snell M Rated Helmets:
Snell "M" (Motorcycle) rated helmets are designed for motorcycling and other motorsports. They offer slightly less protection than SA rated helmets.
What are the key differences between SA and M Rated Helmets:
SA standard requires flammability test while the M standard does not.
SA standard has rollbar impact test while M standard does not.
SA standard allows narrower visual field than M standard (Some SA helmets aren't street legal).
How do I know if my helmet meets the necessary Snell specifications?
Always check your club rulebook to determine what helmet specifications they require. SCCA Solo rules, for example, will allow you to use the current Snell specification, as well as the previous two Snell specifications. So, for the 2006 season, you could use Snell Snell M95/SA95, Snell M00/SA00, or Snell M05/SA05 helmets. Snell M90/SA90 helmets would not meet requirements after October 1, 2005.
Some other racing organizations will allow you to use the current Snell specification and only the previous Snell specification, so read your rulebook carefully. Also, be sure that your club will allow the use of Snell "M" rated helmets. SCCA Solo does allow these helmets, although some organizations that run high speed events will require Snell "SA" rated helmets."

Very interesting stuff. Thanks for the education. I've ridden motorcycles for years and never realized I had inferior protection for the gourd compared to the SA helmets. Reading this info I'm glad the Shoei's I've owned have never been called on to perform. Does anyone know a local place to purchase said SA helmets? I must have a stranger than your average melon cause I had a heck of a time finding SM helmets that fit properly. Hate to go the internet route. Be like buying shoes mail order.
