I'm looking to get an NA to make a decent track *****. I don't have a color preference but I do wish that the body is straight with no rust. 5-spd is a must as well.
If anyone runs across something that is relatively cheap (~$3k) then please let me know!
TIA

Glad to see the website is working ;)
What do you think to the idea of a sub-forum for craigslist finds?
MeFryRice
07-23-2008, 11:49 AM
That would work. I would also recommend having a separate section for "Miata's For Sale"
Jack-MX5ATLanta.com

The classifieds section should experience substantial growth in the not too distant future with the new portal/homepage in development. Will take us a little while to finish off though.

I saw this on Craigslist (before seeing Eric post this) and I literally just got off the phone with him not even 5 minutes ago. He told me there was some dents on the driver side fender but the rest of the exterior was ing decent shape (the paint was no longer glossy). He's suppose to call me back later tonight/tomorrow if the people that are coming to look at it don't buy it.
Thanks for the heads up!!

Here's the info on the white one in F'ville
92 195K miles
Brad 7704805425
$3200
missing passenger mirror
been resprayed
new top w/plastic window
all black cloth interior
It looks like it's been in a front right corner wreck at some time. The paint on the bumper is coming off in a couple of places, it's got a few paint chips bigger than a quarter, and some of the clearcoat is fading. There's overspray on the seal around the rain tray, that's how I know it's been resprayed.

Ha...Both front fenders are fuked, the drivers seat is split, interior has ducktape and a trashed radio surround, the soft top is absolutely worthless etc the paint is shot, and the car has a weird miss/skip at idle. If youre looking for a nice straight car that one isnt it....plus he's proven himself to be a shady seller and a liar. I'd keep looking.

Cool beans.
As an FYI, my experience with Miatas is this...to score a decent price on a clean one dont waste time. (not saying you are :))
They tend to move fairly quickly when priced right and in the right condition. That one seems reasonably priced based upon description/miles.
The interior trouble spots I'd expect with tan interior would be the leather on the drivers seat and the carpets. Obviously either the top or interior has been changed, probably the top. They didnt put black tops on tan interior cars. My view is that the real 'value' in Miatas is found in the body, straight and clean with good paint trumps mechainical issues for me. An Miata engine is far cheaper then a decent paintjob plus its a change one can easily make themselves.
I have to laugh when I see a pricing debate on m.net about whether some car is 'worth it' or that one is going to 'try to find time' to have a look when I know that car is likely already sold...and in some cases already sitting in my driveway. lol....
MeFryRice

The only reason why I won't be able to look at it tonight is, I'm going out to celebrate a friend's birthday. :) He said he's about an hour and a half from me (some part of southern georgia) and IMO, the further south you are in GA, the more redneck the area becomes and when was the last time you heard of a redneck looking for a Miata?
When I spoke to the seller, he had indicated that the top would need replacement soon which is fine by me as I plan on adding on a hardtop.
Just like you, my main concern is a clean body. The interior pieces are cheap enough to where if something is broke, I'll just replace it. I plan on replacing the carpet anyways as I'm sure it has collected it's share of stains over the years.
I will let you know what I decide tomorrow.

When you get a car, if you plan to autocross it, sign up for the Mazdaspeed program. The discount is pretty good. You just have to give them a date when you will have your first two races completed by and send them the results when you finish.
I got my new motor from the program for $2300 to my driveway. I also picked up new suspension bolts (the alignment ones with the eccentrics on them.) Competition motor mounts and competition diff mounts. Everything was a good price and the delivery is fast. It was delivered FedEx in about 3 days.

I called him at 5 to let him know that I was on the way to get it and he said just give him a call when I get close and he'll meet me there (car was located at a junk yard). I get there within an hour (the time from Peachtree City to Lithonia) just like I said I would. I get there and one of the guys there asked if I came to look at the Miata? My response was obvious, yeah. He then proceeds to tell me that Antwone (seller) had just sold the car to someone else and just left to fill out the paperwork. WTF?? I called Antwone to ask him if it was true and his response was "sorry, I meant to give you a call to let you know that I sold it someone else and I just left to complete the paperwork." So you can imagine I'm not very happy once I get off the phone. As I go to get back in my car, another slave worker whispered underneath his breath "you snooze, you lose". Good thing I don't own a gun cause I would have shot that guy in the leg and left.
Stupid ****ing people piss me off. So now I wasted 2 hrs of driving roundtrip and gas and it's not like we're not like we're in a freaking gas crisis or anything.

This scenario is typical sadly. The integrity of sellers is often very low.
Over the years I have learned by experience to follow my gut and now often avoid this but I still get caught now and then. If you contacted the seller of the 2k 99 you probably figured out he had no integrity either, that evolved into a 'race' and 'redneck auction'.
There are several factor that play into this. A reasonable and intelligent seller with any integrity will take buyers in the order in which they responded and follow up accordingly. But, the less intelligent are easily confused by the response they get to their ad and without any real integrity to guide them it ends up being a cluster****. Any time a car is priced cheaply you will usually have issues.
It kind of goes with the territory sometimes. Example, in cases where someone is offering a car way under market that in itself suggests the strong possibility they arent too bright.
Keep looking, you'll find one.

That scenario happens quite frequently. On one occasion one seller was offering an NB at $5500. I told them I'd pay 4k for it IF it checked out to be what they said. They made two appointments with me and broke both of them for dip**** reasons. Then they tried the "I am going to sell it at 5pm" bull****....which in that case failed. I decided to pass on ANY deals with the seller. A customer of mine ended up buying the car for 3k...so the dumb ****in seller lost at least 1k for being stupid.

Not too shabby. Not big on the tan top on black interior, but that's an easy fix if you don't like it either. Remembering you want to go boosted, '93 means 1.6L, which are fine to boost, but the 1.8L offers more overall power potential.

Nothing about that car would make it appealing to travel to another state to purchase. Keep hanging tight; there will be nice ones for sale in Atlanta this winter. They all go up for sale when it's cold.

Thats a phenomenon that I have never really observed in Atlanta....in general. It tends to be true in other climates far north of here though.
I have bought/sold Miatas all through the "winter" here with not much measurable fluctuation in pricing. Your car (IMHO) had more to do with its location....wayyy out in the boonies....and its likely redneck owner then anything..and some luck.
I think we see bigger fluctuations in pricing tied to other overall economic factors in ATL.
But...of course right at Christmas it can be tempting to some sellers if you wave cash around. Never hurts to try.

I definitely do not think that a '91 is worth that much. Proper maintenance, parts, and paint are part of the investment of having a car if you take care of it properly. It does not tie into the sale price that much. Granted the HT is about $1k of the price, but that's still too much.

I'd rather have silver then nearly any other OEM NA color...especially black.
Black sucks balls...especially the NA paint as its not a clear coated paint and a major ***** to care for. I would trade my black NA in a heartbeat for a silver, mariner, or yellow in equal condition....probably a white too.
Silver (if cleared) is super easy to care for and with the right colors added can be very classic looking..as in Porsche etc. A red interior really sets it off too. I love it.

I still think you should get a 94+ car to start with.
You'll end up spending more to get a 1.6 chassis to be as good as a 1.8 chassis rather than just buying a 1.8. Things like 1.8 brakes, 1.8 diff, all the chassis bracing (you have to buy 1.8 subframe bits because the 1.8 chassis braces won't just bolt up to 1.6 cars....and they make a large difference). You said you want to get a 1.8 swap later and there are a bunch of things just to fit the swap. Also, the 1.8 transmission is slightly stronger too.
