Anyone want to meet up for breakfast at Marietta Diner and go over and check out some aeroplanes???

I like planes.... and because I said that, it makes this a discussion thread by default and not just a meet 'n greet thread.

Word.
It feels like a couple months ago we couldn't find anything to do.
Now we have so much to do we can't fit it all in!
A happy medium would be fine with me.

Well I guess if we don't make it to CR@TG this could be a possibility..

Wings Over Marietta Air Show and Open House Oct. 18-19.
by Master Sgt. Angelita Colon-Francia and Erin Tindell
Public Affairs

9/19/2008 - DOBBINS AIR RESERVE BASE, Ga. -- What's significant about the number 162,000?

That's how many pounds of thrust six F-16 Fighting Falcons produce. It may also represent the number of goose bumps visitors will have when they fly over their heads at several hundred miles per hour during the Wings Over Marietta Air Show Oct. 18-19.

The 94th Airlift Wing has teamed up with the Georgia Air Force Association to host the first air show hosted by Air Force reservists at Dobbins since 2001. The featured act will be the renowned USAF Thunderbirds flying their tandem of F-16's.

The Thunderbirds "use a mix of precision formation and solo routines that demonstrate the great capabilities of Air Force pilots and the F-16 Fighting Falcon," said Major Robert
'Flash' Light, air show director of operations.

Other acts include an F-15E Strike Eagle demo, the USAF Academy Wings of Blue Parachute Team, the Air Force Reserve Jet Car and various civilian aerobatic acts such as Red Eagle Air Sports and Jill "Raggz" Long. A special demo will be performed by the F-22 Raptor demo team.

"Military air power will be the focus of the 2008 air show," said Maj. Terence Green, air show director. "Where can you come see a large variety of premiere U.S. military and civilian aircraft including the astonishing F-22 Raptor, built right here in Marietta, that will demonstrate it's fascinating next generation fighter capabilities?"

There will be dozens of aircraft static displays, simulators and fun activities for people of all ages. Food, water, soft drinks, and souvenirs will be available for sale throughout the
flight line.

Lockheed Martin's main gate and parking lots will open at 8:30 a.m. while entry to the show area starts at 10 a.m.

For up-to-date information about the show, including performers, displays, directions and prohibited items visit, http://www.dobbins.schultzairshows.com/index.html or call the air show hotline at 678-655-2333.

Ben, Nick seems interested in getting your shocks/springs. I've done business with him twice recently, he's a really good guy. We should see if he'll come to the show if we go Sunday.

10-17-2008, 08:06 PM

I've seen one at the local air field in my hometown.

There is a B-25 that is there all the time as well. I showed it to Mike one of the last time we were there visiting my mom.

ben91
10-20-2008, 10:40 AM
No doubt there are actually a few out there still, but I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that Mike saw a Hercules just now. I see them flying formation from time to time. I've never seen a Flying Fortress that was actually flying, though I've seen them in air museums.

RotorNutFD3S
10-20-2008, 10:43 AM
It may be a possibility, the Aluminum Overcast and Liberty Belle frequent Altanta for flights out of PDK and that field in Lawrenceville.
There's a huge difference in sound between a jet and radial engines too.

Oh, and come to think of it, there is a B-24 Liberator based in Atlanta somewhere... Some people confuse them for 17s... IDK how well-versed Mike is in aircraft though. :)

JennB
10-20-2008, 10:43 AM
My office window actually faces Dobbins, I see those big fat ones (C-130??) pretty often. I saw some older looking bomber guy with propellers a while back but it was too far for me to tell what it was.

I get buzzed by the stupid traffic helicopters pretty often as well  Traffic helicopters are not so interesting.

ben91
10-20-2008, 10:55 AM
There's a huge difference in sound between a jet and radial engines too.
The Herc is powered by turboprops, not jets. I'd think it would be easy to confuse a turboprop with a radial if you didn't know what you were looking for as they're both propeller driven.

Ben, you're always first to throw down a BS flag. Also, ask Jen, I know my planes quite well... and i know a B-17 when I see one.. esp. since I was watching it for a good 10 seconds.

I also know why it was flying over.

Every year they give rides in exchange for a donation that goes to charity. They base the flights from PDK.

From last year
http://tylergoforth.blogspot.com/2007/02/peachtree-dekalb-airport-atlanta-ga-b17.html

I can't verify the schedule, but here is the site that organizes it.. maybe someone can say if it's them or not.

Ha... I just looked it up and you are right. It was in Lawrenceville this weekend. Why didn't we know this sooner?!?!? I would love to have seen it.

This is also the second time one has been in Atlanta and we found out too late. Both were giving flights as well. Not cheap... but who cares! That would be awesome!

Oh wow. That had to be the biggest brain fart ever.
