Damn...what the hell makes a parking garage just collapse like that? Poor design? Al Quaeda?

damn. where's ben, the resident structural engineer?

I actually think that's right near where he works (or has been). Just heard that it might be the same builder that had the structure collapse at the Botanical Gardens and killed a worker. They still don't know if there's anybody in that sandwich.

After looking at the pics it appears one precast panel gave way and caused the level below it to collapse. That deck appears to be all precast concrete which means it goes together basically like a giant erector set.
Hard to say the cause but it would seem some kind of structural failure. Probably not a design flaw though.

im kinda drugged up (had 2 teeth pulled this afternoon) but it was probably deterioration. over time, an unintended flaw (debris blocking water channels/drains) caused a flaw. it was probably built right but not maintained correctly.

or it was put together too fast with neglect during construction.

Well since they confirmed that it was the same company that built the botanical gardens walkway that failed, I'm beginning to see a pattern. :dunno:

Deterioration is not very likely unless the concrete was under the required PSI. The deck isn't old enough for it to degrade that much. I have worked on parking decks both poured in place and precast concrete and they are all over designed on purpose. It is possible the steel anchor bolts that the structure is constructed with were sub grade steel or just embedded improperly.

Truthfully though we may never know the cause unless they make it public.

I hadn't heard that Eric. Definitely bad PR for them. I hate to hear that being in the business myself.

they're probably going to lose A LOT of potential customers over these 2 total failures. no one wants dead bodies on their hands!

your experience overrides my guess! IMHO experience is the only true way to learn ANYTHING. but you're probably more on top of what caused the failure.. i was just going on what i remember from parking decks i've seen in atlanta where all the drains were clogged with trash. the parking structure next to the ga dome deffinatly has had that problem for years..

I bet that OSHA isn't done with them. If they find negligence on the general contractors part they will wish it was only 6k. I worked for a company that had a case against them for a scaffolding failure and it was closer to 100k. And the scaffold was a standard in the industry.

I love all the people that are getting all paranoid about parking in parking decks now.... what a bunch of 'tards  Fine... that's more parking for me!

Eric, I wouldn't say there is any pattern. C'mon....one structure under construction and another that had been done for over 7 years. Who knows, some dip**** in a giant SUV may have knocked into the structure and caused damage. Think about it, 6,000lbs moving at even 6mph could knock something just right...and knowing people these days, if someone were to do that they would just not give a crap and leave like nothing happened.

Just got back from vacation yesterday. Couldn't enjoy it fully though, with the phone ringing off the hook about this. I'll fill you guys in with some details about this later if you like.

I figured you wouldn't be allowed to speak about it until all the legal stuff was cleared out. ;)
