Having been around for a few years and having began my automobile hobby with American muscle and classics, I find the term and uses of 'ricer' to be amusing.

In the purist sense at the beginning, the term refers to those who modify Japanese...cars for street use, inlcuding engine mods, body kits, paint, trim, stickers, spoilers, rimz, etc etc Such automobiles were called 'rice-rockets' when small engines were modded to make more power. Nowdays we often refer to those whos car has exterior mods that make it look fast, when it really isnt, as a ricer.

I find it highly amusing that nowdays I can be sitting in a parking lot with tons of 'ricers' around me and yet when someone drives through in their modded Civic or 240 invariably someone will call out "ricer".
To me the very essense of 'rice' can be visually seen in Nopi for example. (and others) CR.net is a good online example of Miata 'rice'..the 'worship' of all things Japanese.

However, it seems that those who engage in ricer-ism do not embrace this term and try to use it to refer just to others...or others who's mods come from a Pep Boys sale table. I think that is often the pot calling the kettle black. I look at it this way....if you are a brokeass ricer then your coilovers, body kit, and rimz come from ebay. If your 'Nopi rice' or a "tuner" then you pay megabucks for coilovers, body kits, and rimz imported from Japan....but either way youre still a 'ricer' at the core.

I say embrace your heritage!

 You make a good point...
I've always defined rice as "an owner's attempt to make his slow OEM car look or sound fast by adding parts that merely mimic the capability of speed."

I've always viewed it as Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements. I don't use rice as much as I used to, I tend to just say, "that looks like ****."

I always use "rice" to describe badly modified, pointless cars with cheap, crappy parts. Stock Civics with really loud exhausts and vented hoods. Grand Am's with "Type R" stickers across the windshield (yea, really). Cars with cut springs, Fast and Furious graphics that are usually crooked. Just... crap.

See, to me the initial term "RICE" stood for Rotary Internal Cumbustion Engine and that once the good 'ole boys heard this term, they applies it to anything in the automotive community that comes from Asia. I've also heard that it came from the motorcycle community that it was a label for all of the Asian motorcycles because they 'ran on rice instead of gasoline".
