The gauge in my 92 Miata flucuates greatly when shifting through the gears, mostly between 30-90. It hovers just below 60 in 5th gear. Idle is near 30.

I have noticed that a friends 90 Miata does not flucuate much below and above 60. Is there a reason for the flucuation, is a signal for something going on?

Both cars have the same oil filter and weight of oil and are within 20k of the same mileage.

Thanks for your ideas.

Sounds quite normal to me. Your friends car sounds a bit abnormal for a 'real' oil pressure gauge.

If his indicated oil pressure doesnt vary much above or below 60 regardless of oil temperature or RPM, that would suggest to me a flaky sender...or possibly the gauge. Its also how later model idiot gauges work, they show the same 'level' of pressure all the time...until there is no pressure then they drop to nothing.

Just be glad you don't have one of the fake ones like our NBs have...it's pretty much worthless.

My NA and NB have fakes.
