I picked up this beauty on July 8th, 2008.

She has the Grand Touring Package which includes leather seats and a cloth (not vinyl) soft top. 26,700 miles on the clock when I picked her up!

Completely stock as of right now, so I will be updating as changes occur!

I don't have the greatest pictures yet since she is still very new to me but here is a picture that was taken at a local meet and a crappy camera phone picture!

Update: 08/19/08

The Track Dog Racing Mazdaspeed Air Splitter finally came in!
It was the easiest mod ever. Just drill a couple holes and it bolts right up! Took about 20 minutes to do!

Yeah, I guess it was more than a couple!
But it still didn't take very long!

The MSM was blessed with a more squared off front end; much easier to put a front lip on it that looks mean.

Damn NA with it's rounded nose. Hard to find an aggressive looking front spoiler for it, aside from the Garage Vary.

Gorgeous car Sawyer, the splitter looks good.

Quick little update:

Just ordered the FM Downpipe that was on group buy. I'm also going to order an Enthuza midpipe (assuming that they will fit together?).

But while I'm waiting for those to arrive, Steve talked me into putting my stock exhaust back on and getting my car dyno'd over at AllSpeed to get an idea of where I started and how much I'll gain with the new exhaust set up.

I am really wondering how much the new axle back does. Since there is that nasty kink in the piping right before the muffler.

ben91

I'm sure it helps but the downpipe and midpipe both suck pretty bad too.

There is a crush bend on my stock midpipe that has like 1.5" ID. The MSM pipe's about the same.

Just got off the phone with Jason at Enthuza. He has 11 pieces in front of mine so it will be a little while until my midpipe is available. It's fine with me though as my downpipe wont be here until Wednesday. That, and I seem to be spending more money on parts than I've made lately

Very small update for today. :)

There's an Enthuza midpipe on the MSM forums for sale.

Sawyer
05-07-2009, 12:31 PM
Yeah, I saw that.. But I already told him I wanted to so I don't want to back out now. And I don't think the seller wants to separate it from the XR, which I already have.

Ah. Figured you had seen it, but just in case. :) I'd rather have a new one from Jason anyway.

Sawyer

Exactly. I know what happened with the guy I bought my suspension from isn't typical, but since then I'd much rather pay the little extra money for a new part than buy used from someone I don't know.

When we took Jenn's o2 sensor out of the orig midpipe, it sheared off some its threads and was unusable. You might run into the same thing on yours.

Also the flange at the muffler inlet sucked and had to be double gasketed (had both a new flat gasket and we re-used the original donut gasket). We did try it with just the new gasket first and there was a big leak. With both, I think that it's still holding leak-free, but that's not a great solution.

RotorNutFD3S
05-14-2009, 03:22 PM
If you have a leak, just do what Jason recommends, high-temp red RTV. Worked like a charm on my exhaust, I didn't even bother with gaskets.

I remember that. We're not going to install the downpipe until the mid-pipe comes in from Enthuza which should be sometime next week.

Santa came early this year!!

http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h291/snowbrdpenguin/2005%20Lava%20Orange%20Mazdaspeed%20Miata/IMG_0215.jpg

This on is just a tad bigger than the one I have now!

http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h291/snowbrdpenguin/2005%20Lava%20Orange%20Mazdaspeed%20Miata/IMG_0217.jpg

Picked up some 550cc RC Injectors, should be here sometime next week.

Midpipe and downpipe are still sitting in my closet. My sister's graduation is this weekend so I've been too busy preparing for that to get anything on the car done.

Going to Tennessee on Sunday to pick up a Hard Dog Hard Core Double Diagonal Rollbar that I bought off of Miata.net.

I'm going to have a lot of work ahead of me..

wish you asshats would stop using photobucket... 1- picture quality sucks, 2- most filters block them, 3- pict.com is better for quick hosting.

So because all I see are red x's, I have to take the link, go upload it somewhere else and then look at it...too much work.

Nice! It will be well worth it. What are you using for engine management?

No engine management yet. I'm going to wait it out and hopefully I can find a good deal on a Hydra. At least that's my plan!

The kit won't be installed for a while. I still have a small list of things I need to get before I put it on. This is what I can think of off the top of my head:

Engine Management
Blow off valve
Manual boost controller
Possibly upgrade my fuel pump, but we'll wait and see on that one..

I really wouldn't say need, but want. Technically, you can replace the turbo/manifold/downpipe and use your existing recirc/factory boost controller, factory ECU, fuel pump and still be safe.. the car will just drive better and power delivery will be better (dunno with that large of a turbo though). I've heard of some people on m-s simply replacing the turbo/mani/downpipe and having good results.

I know that the 3071R will be a bit laggy, but oh well. I just wanted it because not many people have it. Once I find some 3.63 gears it will make it a whole lot more manageable.

The turbo is not as big as you guys are making it out to be. I've seen one used on a Saturn (1.9L) and that thing was impressive, and they have much lower RPM limits. It's a T3 version of the GT2871R with some spec changes to make it responsive.

MeFryRice
05-29-2009, 11:15 AM
Exactly what I was thinking yesterday when we unwrapped it. It's larger then stock but it's not Supra big.

ben91
05-29-2009, 11:29 AM
No it's not super huge, but I don't think it's a good choice with the weak bottom end, 6 spd, and 4.10's.

MeFryRice
05-29-2009, 11:50 AM
We're not planning on hitting high boost pressures nor will she be running the 4.10's. She is currently looking for a set of 3.63 or maybe a set of 3.90's.

MeFryRice
05-29-2009, 12:00 PM
Ok so I just spoke with Brandon at FM (jeremy was doing a dyno) and he had indicated that we can run the 3071 turbo with a good tune for about ~275-280whp before we need start worring about the bottom end. He mentioned that they know of a couple people that are running a similar setup and seem to be pretty happy.

Honestly, I have no idea!
I don't really have a plan, obviously. I kinda just keep buying parts and hope that I'll figure out what I want to do with the car.
I'm not sure if I'm going to keep them all, but they are there if I decide I want them.

Mike and I were talking about this Friday night, the word Miata must mean something that has to do with bloodshed or extreme pain. His car punctured my left elbow somehow, I still can't flex my arm fully or squeeze a tight fist.

Anyway, if we can get Taylor in on it, doing the rollbar could be a breeze.

It's been a while, so a couple updates:

Turbo kit sold for a very pretty penny, so the extra money I have left over from that will be going toward a nice set of wheels. I just have to find some I like. There isn't a whole lot I want to do to the exterior besides that.

I've had the door bars in for a while now and you can totally tell a difference. I love them. Other people ***** about getting in and out of the car, but I can get in just fine so I don't care.

Installed the FM O2 signal modifier. I don't really like it. It's causing my car to have some strange issues. If I'm driving along anywhere higher than 3k rmps and put the car into neutral, the revs drop down to about 500, and then bounce up and stablize. It stalls once in a while, but mostly I guess the computer catches it before that happens. It's really weird.

Autometer boost gauge is in. I put it in the far left eyeball vent. I like it there. It matches the stock gauges very nicely.

Steve happened to run across someone's flickr account that had a picture of my car from Import Alliance back in July. Here it is:

Sawyer

Thanks!

I've always wanted SSR Type-C's or TE-37's, but Mike and Jenn have those, so I can't.

I love the Work VS-XX's but they are really hard to find in 4x100 and when you do, they're in weak *** offsets.

i say get those ssr. i mean theyre wheels who cares if someone else has them its not like theyre the first to have them either. mikes look nice as hell i was skeptical about how 17"s look on NBs but with the right ride height it can be pulled off. youre pretty low so i think they would look very nice. you gonna get 17" or 16"?

Sawyer
12-03-2009, 01:23 AM
I don't know, it depends. My stock wheels look like donks when my car is going down the road. I think I'd prefer 16's. But the VS-XX's aren't available in 16's so I guess it'd depend on which wheel I decide to go with.

DecoyOctopus
12-03-2009, 06:21 AM
i say get some 16"s they look great on nbs and your car will probably drive alot nicer...id even get some 15"s on the side cause it drives even nicer with some light weight 15"

nickt93
12-03-2009, 06:38 AM
Looks great LB! My vote goes for the Type Cs - that closeout pricing at Tire Rack is pretty unbelievable. The only downside I see is the width - the 17s are only 7.5" wide.

LB, the PCM will ignore EGO feedback on deceleration (fuel is shut off). Make sure you grabbed the correct wires to hook the thing up.

Sounds like an issue with the idle control valve. IAC valve failures are not uncommon.
I would start by increasing the mechanical idle air bypass by accessing the adjuster screw on the t-body and rotating it 1/2 to 1 full turn counter-clockwise.

The install was based on FM's diagram that was included with the signal modifier although I don't recall the wire colors off the top of my head.

I've been doing some research on this on the MS forums and it seems to be a common issue with other people as well. I need to continue trying to find a solution, just haven't had the time lately.

When I have time I'll take a look if you forward me relevant info. FM might not have used the best power and ground planes.

I want in on some of this action... The FM O2 mod stuff, not... nevermind...

Anyways, I'd love to hear what Ben comes up with, mine is wanky as hell... from what I gather it was suppose to fix the 4500-5000 rpm afterburner effect... Mine is still there, very noticable still.

Here you go Bernie, this is what I was looking for. I kind of want to attempt it yet I don't...

I hear ya... I don't really have the patience for all that fiddy stuff. God invented plug and pray for folks just like me... It took me about 3 1/2 hours to install my new boost gauge the other day, so as you can see transistors and diodes and whatcha-ma-jiggets just aren't my strong point...

i say get some 16"s they look great on nbs and your car will probably drive alot nicer...id even get some 15"s on the side cause it drives even nicer with some light weight 15"

I think 15's look really small on NB's. But that's just me.

Looks great LB! My vote goes for the Type Cs - that closeout pricing at Tire Rack is pretty unbelievable. The only downside I see is the width - the 17s are only 7.5" wide.

Yeah I saw that. Very tempting since I could just switch over my tires from my stock wheels. But the width makes me sad. I've had a hard time finding any 4x100 wheels wider than 7.5" that arent Sportmaxxes or Rotas. :(

What's wrong with 7.5" for a street tire and wheel? Mike and I both run them. Put a 215 on it and you're good to go. Not that the235's didn't look really nice when they were on for a while but the rubbing got really old.

Oh there's nothing wrong with 7.5" wheels. Just if I have the choice I'd want something a little wider.

On Sunday Steve and I had a mini detail day. We clay barred and waxed both cars. I also cleaned my top with Raggtop cleaner and protectant. I got a camera for Christmas and had not had a chance to use it yet, so I just took a bunch of random pictures. It's just a point and shoot so they're nothing fancy.

For some reason I don't have any after pictures though. Oops!

Here's my Driveway Photoshoot! LOLOLOL!!!!1!!!1!11!one!11!!
Sorry, I couldn't help it!

Although my paint wasn't as bad as I thought, it looked a ton better just after the clay bar. I used Meguire's NXT Tech Wax after that. The paint feels amazing. I'm very happy with the results. I'll get pictures of it all done with wax and everything today. :)

Lookin' good!

If you have any over spray from the Raggtopp protectant a little IPA wipe down will get rid out it no problems. I thought I had taped and papered my car up pretty good, but you'd be amazed at the missed spots.

I still have the Evo guys. I'll give rides to those I've already promised them too although I'd prefer if the rides could wait until I have the car tuned which will be very soon. :)

Way to go... I haven't looked over mine, probably should check it over as well. Too bad you kids just put that sealant on the top last weekend... But sealant is cheaper than a new top.

My main concern was them using the roll bar as an excuse as to why the rear window is separating but to my surprise and conversation with the guy, I was able to make it happen. Oh and having connections is always helpful in these type of situations. :)

Lucky lucky. The rear window area can be damaged from running at highway speeds with the top up and windows down.

sweet! did you go 3"? I just ordered mine to take advantage of the group buy. Glad to see Mazda ponying up on that top, and the prices they charge for the OEM top is staggering.
