I've searched several forums and have found nothing.
I've been wondering if a 1.8L miata transmission will bolt up to a 2.0L FS-DE out of a 2002 Mazda Protege.

Based off what I know about my previous work on Protege's:
-an older BP (protege) transmission will bolt up to newer FS engine (if you swap the flywheel/clutch)
-The BP block in the older protege's was the same block used in the miata (with minor changes and a different intake of course)
-Therefore a newer FS-DE protege engine should bolt up to the bp miata transmission...

The reason why I'm considering this is because I have several FS-DE engines in the garage, one of which is already built and boosted...
and I just picked up an underpowered 1.6L miata.

If anyone can measure the bolt distances on the 1.8L transmission, I'd greatly appreciate it.

AC : 11 1/2"
BC : 6 1/2"
BD : 12 1/2"
AD : 13 1/4"

Starter bolts
S1-S2 : 3 1/8"
S2-S3 : 3 1/8"
S1-S3 : 4 1/2"

Fabbing up an intake, exhaust, wiring, etc isn't much of an issue.
I won't even bother with the swap if the bellhousing doesn't mate up to the FS-DE.

Thanks!

i am surprised no one has a transmission or engine laying around that they can measure.

I do, we've been discussing it offline lol. He's going to bring his plate by my house to make sure everything lines up, though right now 'tis not looking good... which is weird. I figured they'd totally bolt up. We'll have to see, chubby hasn't sung yet ;)

yeah he told me he had talked to you about it, be interesting to see if it works. he still needs to get his bushings replaced so we can go to 180.

still doesn't make sense, the BP from a protege will swap into the miata and, afaik bolt up to the transmission... the protege BP will bolt to the same G series transmission as the FS motor... but the FS motor won't bolt to the Miata bell housing... don't make no sense.

yeah it sucks if it did you would have had a nice miata in a hurry.

The BP installed in the 1st gen Protege is leaned forward about 8* whereas the FS in the 3rd gen Protege is purely vertical. I don't see how the G-series gear boxes would directly interchange in the first place.
