View Full Version : MSM Hub Assemble fit on an NA?

Like the title states, will the hub assembly off an MSM fit on an NA to allow for a 5-lug conversion? I mainly want this for the better bolt pattern (more selection of wheels) and the obvious better brake options as well.

I dare you to go over to miata.net and post this
But ummm.. the MSM is 4-lug... just like every 90-05 Miata ever made. No there is no "bolt up" 5-lug, wheel selection in 4x100 is great... you just have to look, there are plenty of brake upgrades for all price ranges (from the larege factory brakes of the MSM and 01+ sport to full 4 wheel Wilwood/Brembo/APRacing etc...) Personally, the sport brakes with Hawk HP+/ss lines/ATE super blue brake fluid is more then sufficent for everything short of endurance racing and is almost overkill for a street driven car.

You get the LOLWUT award for the day. MazdaSpeed Miatas are only 4-lug. Unless I'm completely misinterpreting your intentions.
*EDIT* Mike beat me to it, I actually had to find pictures because I started doubting the fact that they were 4-lug. And your g/f has one!!! That's what's even funnier.

So what kinda of wheels might you be looking for?
MeFryRice
09-19-2008, 08:01 AM
It depends on what color car I decide to go with. I'd prefer to have a black one and run TE37's. :D
Or a white one with mag blue CE28N's......
Doppelgänger
09-19-2008, 09:28 AM
lol you're going to spend more money on the wheel then the car! rofl
I have seen a few places that stock TE37 and CE28N in 4x100, actually there is a set of 15x6.5 (6.5"? oh the wimpyness) bronze TE37 on ebay right now. Since you seem to like bling factor, im suprised you're not looking for a good deal on a NB so you can run 17"s easier....
I don't know where you got your RG's, but i've dealt with machiii.net several times and they're WONDERFUL people.
MeFryRice
09-19-2008, 09:55 AM
I like some bling but not a lot of it.
I have to have something wider then a 6.5" wheel. I was thinking along the lines of at least an 8". Yes, I know I'll need to get my fenders pulled and run some camber to get them to fit with the offset I want. :D :D :D
I haven't had any luck finding either set of Volks in 4x100 and that's the reason why I wanted to move to a 5-lug. :( I will have to take a look at that site though! :)
Doppelgänger
09-19-2008, 09:58 AM
Nah, you def. do not need to pull/roll fenders for a 8" wide wheel. It's all about offset. with anything higher than 30 you'll be fine. Hell, i'm contemplating on going with a 17x8.5 +25 for my car on my next set of wheels and i won't have to pull my fenders. I did take a wooden dowel to my fenders and gave them a quick roll just to fit my slicks though.. but it wasn't major work or anything.
MeFryRice
09-19-2008, 10:07 AM
I had to roll the fenders on the S to get the RG's to fit. I know I def. want to run a low offset et0 or 15. :D
I noticed Work makes some 16x10's....:D
What specs did you have on your NA?

MeFryRice

15x8 0 offset is not an optimal handling setup ;) Just ask Emilio why his 8" and 9" wide wheels are not super so-gay-cal style
MeFryRice
09-21-2008, 03:48 PM
What do you recommend then?
I'm going to run two different wheel setups; one for street and one for track use. :)
Doppelgänger
09-21-2008, 07:23 PM
Unfortunatly there are so many options as to what can be run. Like, if you decide to get a big brake kit.. you will be limited to what 15" wheels can be run. Some people prefer 15"s, i prefer 16"s...both have good tire selection available for both street and race tires. IMO, 16's allow for more air circulation around the brakes and help resist fade when driving hard.
i'd say a 7.5" to 8.5" with a 25-40mm offset would be optimal for looks and performance without having to worry about rubbing. Remember, you're talking to someone who prefers function over form... if you're going to run a wide rim, you better run a wide tire!
Here are some of the smaller wheels i have run to give you an idea of "non cali-spec" wheels....

I've never felt the need to have my car 1" off the ground either, and by not having a rim tucking under a fender, you can get away with having a higher offset and it not looking like a sunken battleship.
MeFryRice
09-21-2008, 07:41 PM
No worries here! I'm not building a VW and not a fan of the stretched tire look! I'm not to concerned about rubbing, that can be fixed with a fender roller. :D
Doppelgänger
09-22-2008, 07:13 AM
I guess what im trying to say about the 8" 0 offset crowd is that the combination of a 8" wheel and 0 offset [obviously] moves the wheel out ~1.5". To me, that means there is 1.5" of area that is not being utilized, in wich case Emilio has taken advantage of by offering the 9" wide rim. This is why i want to run a 8.5" +25 wheel, to utulize as much of the wheel well space as i can..and run a 235-40/17 tire :)
Offset alone isn't what makes a wheel look 'cool' or 'deep dish'. It's the overall width. If you're willing to roll your fenders, why not go with a 15x9? Use that space!
*Once again, just trying to give insight as to how width and offset work together.. not to tell you what to do.
RotorNutFD3S
09-22-2008, 07:35 AM
^ That is the logic that has convinced me that running 15x9 6ULs is a good idea for my next set of wheels. Plus I really like them. I can't wait for the day I get rid of the 002s, although they haven't been a bad wheel for me. Free is free. :)

There is a lot of stuff out there, but sometimes it comes down to what brand you want and who makes the size/offset you need. Depending on how you look at it, this is where companies like ROTA profit. So you want Regameister wheels, but you want them in a size that fits you better? Tada! Or you can fill out an oderform with RAYS or WORK. Trust me, if i really had money to blow, i'd have a nice set of WORKS or SSR's.
Have you looked into the Kosei K1's?
MeFryRice
09-23-2008, 01:41 PM
I wanted a set of Kosei K1's back when I had the BMW. They are a nice lightweight wheel that won't empty my wallet. I'd like to have a set of SSR Comps for track use and then my Volks for daily. I'm going to get in contact with Volk and see how much they would rape me for a custom fit setup. :)
I just don't want the same wheel that you typically see on an NA. They are all pretty much played out these days. :(

SSR Comps have been done for years on Miatas....if being different is your thing/goal. :D

You nailed it right on the head. $2200 shipped but the widest they can get is a 15x7 et 28. :( Looks like I'll have to bump it up to a 16" to get an 8" wheel.

I just spoke to a guy at Mackin-Industries (distributor of Volks) and he just clarified that they no longer make a 15x8 and the lowest offset in the 16x8 is an et35. :( In order to have a custom set made, an order of 40 pcs would have to be placed. 09-26-2008, 12:26 PM
Well, i found a smoking deal on 17" Kosei K1s. I've thought about a wider Rota D2 in gunmetal or the Rota Torque. For the size and offset I want, Rota has the best selection for the price.I don't want to spend more than $650-$700 for the set.
MeFryRice
09-26-2008, 01:21 PM
IMO, your car as it sits now looks very "clean" but you can tell it's not your typical miata whereas if you were to replace the D2's with some K1's, the car would lose that touch a little bit. It's your car though so by all means, do what you would like.
Like I've said before, your car looks awesome the way it sits today but I agree with you, change is always nice! :D

RotorNutFD3S
09-26-2008, 01:49 PM
I'd hope it would turn out well, that's almost a new set of good wheels.
MeFryRice
09-26-2008, 01:57 PM
I'm sure they would look good if they did them correctly. I had a wheel repaired by them a while back (had rear tires replaced and the shop scratched the lip) but they had to redo it 3 times to get it done right. I kept getting the wheel back with dirt in the paint/clearcoat!
Doppelgänger
09-26-2008, 02:16 PM
I know it seems steep.. but it's still cheaper than a new set of wheels. But if anything were to happen to them , i don't know if i'd be able to recover the cost or if they would hold any extra value if i were to ever sell them.
end of line.
MeFryRice
09-26-2008, 03:06 PM
If I were in your shoes, I'd sell the D2's then buy different wheels. If you think about it, if you were to spend the money to get them polished, at then end of the day, that means you've got more money into the wheels then what they would cost you brand new. If that makes any sense...
Just a rough estimate, lets say you spent ~700 back in the day for the D2's and now your looking to spend $125/wheel to get them polished. You now have ~1200 into a set of wheels that are maybe worth half that.....
RotorNutFD3S
09-26-2008, 03:10 PM
Good point, but at the same time, you have to consider how much you'll be able to sell them used to offset the cost of the next new set.
It really boils down to how good it's going to look and if it's worth the extra investment.
