I've been noticing a lot of people who's first posts were in the WANT TO SELL section. Granted, allowing people to do this ultimately increases the member count, but since these people are selling their Miatas, it's safe to assume they won't become active members.
What about a minimum post count before you can sell something? Nothing ridiculous, but maybe 20 posts, or something like that. Maybe a week or two waiting period after their registration date?

That is an equitable Idea

i dont know that theres enough members for this yet, but it might make some actual members out of one-time posters only trying to make money.

Definitely something to be considered. I've noticed it as well.

From another forum I frequent... which I assume was lifted from another forum:
I kind of like the way certain sites use certain rules so we are adopting some of them
when selling a car you must have all of the following info, period
Make:
Model:
Year:
Mileage:
Options:
Mods:
Engine:
VIN#: (can be pm'd to any of the forum admins)
Condition:
PRICE:
CONTACT METHOD:
also pictures are a must, if you have no pictures period your post will be deleted, if you have pictures but no idea how to post them check the FAQ, if you have pictures and are still retarded, contact an admin and they will try to assist you, i repeat try, that is not a promise, so if youre ignored try someone else
When selling motors, blocks, heads, etc you must post an identifying # from the part, there will be no exceptions, if you cant post a block #, etc to prove its not stolen your post will be deleted
when selling.....pictures are required for any item over $75; pictures are not required but suggested for items under $75
One of the boards I'm on, makes you have 50 posts before you can even see the classifieds section.
My first post was giving away a free exhaust system.

classifieds section is usually the biggest draw of new members, so you don't want to "hide" it from non-members or members of low post count. Especially when they are all prospective buyers.
But prohibiting using the section to sell for X days or Y post count is always a great idea.

Many boards have really retarded nazi rules for the ad section.
My view of this is different then most. I think such rules are stupid.
It really matters not one bit if a persons first post is in the ad section.
Not only is that part of a forum a 'draw' to new members not restricting it also allows
more items to be posted for all. After all, everyone wants stuff for their car.
It really benefits everyone to have little or no restriction.
Example: jzilla posted an SC for sale in one of his first few posts here.
That now resides on Jacks car. Thats a good thing, not a bad thing.
Hypothetical example: My Miata is wrecked. I bought a new car, no longer
have a Miata but I have a hardtop to sell cheap as I dont need it. A friend
tells me about mx5atl and says likely someone there would be interested.
I log on then find retarded ad rules and have to sell my $200 hardtop elsewhere.
I say dont add retarded rules to the advertisement section.
Ads are good for EVERYONE....and the more the merrier.
This being a "local" board, will reduce the amount of scams, because if you're smart enough, you'll meet and pay the person for the product/item in person somewhere.

I'll add to that and say that no board admin should ever take it upon themselves to 'save the world' from scammers. Its not possible. Just deal with it should it arise.
Furthermore, this board is setup with a bot that posts anonymous CL ads related to Miata.
Yet under one of those retarded rule systems that same person would NOT be allowed to join and place an ad in their first post. That would be stupid.

I tend to agree with Kurt. Since this is a local forum, we have a little more protection from the shipping-related scams. I would rather have the good deals pop up here first rather than let the Craigslist vultures in!
In the past when I've encountered a minimum post count to post in the classifieds section, I just go make 10 or 20 quick useless posts! We don't want folks doing that here.

I understand and appreciate your concerns scotty and others but kurt pretty much summed up my opinion on the matter. Sure it doesn't make for an active poster but classifieds are the lifeblood of car forums and I'll take as much activity as possible. It ultimately works out in the long run too, if it spreads by word of mouth then vendors find out about too and that means more funds for the place too. Club roadster is pretty much the example of excessive classifieds rules in my books.

Today I noticed a series of six posts that said "i need just six more posts"
one word in each post.I think new clasified rules are a bit premature, now

Not to mention the fact that this forum is rather small, and most of the time, another forum member on here is probably going to know who some first-time poster is. If you know one of these people, just pop in and vouch for them...ehich should put others at ease.
Also, there isn't as much exposure on here as there is on stuff like m.net/CR/CL..having people jump through hoops is just going to run them off and possibly miss good deals.

They may be wanting to sell an extra Miata, or engine or whatever they have laying around. How is this bad for currently active MX5Atlanta members? If I can get a deal on someone wanting to get out of their Miata, I'd like to know about it regardless of whether they continue to drive a Miata or become active members. Just a thought.
On other websites, If I can't look at the classified section unless I post 20 or 30 times, I don't bother posting or ever going back. Lifes too short.

Glad you guys feel this way. It was selling an item to one of your members through a different classified that turned me on to this site in the first place.
Several of you guys know me, as well as a couple of shops in your area (OPM for instance). Kurt knows me, BTW Kurt, I'm not here to poop in your backyard, I have no problem with folks going to you first. I'm based out of Columbia, and in the ATL area occasionally. Parts were a hobby, now they make my living. Poverty, but a living. I have a strong enough reputation between forums, racers, and even ebay, that I sure as hell won't be scamming anyone. If you can't find it local, Columbia is just a phone call away.

Glad to see you made it over Steve. Fancy a vendor forum, ability to do some advertising and sell your items here? Like diyauto and enthuza.
