As a few of you may have noticed we've been running slow and even gone down a couple of times today. There was an mysql update on the web hoster's side of things and it's been causing a few problems for people with forums. It probably wouldn't have been so much of a problem for us a few months ago but I think now that we have more people doing stuff more often, little things like this are more noticeable.

What it prompted me to think about is we might need a dedicated server at some point. Which as I'm sure a few of you may know, is quite a bit more expensive than what I pay for good webhosting.

So, I may enact some sort of "donating member" status thing if it looks like we need the upgrade for long term. I understand there are a few out there who don't like having to pay for content but it might come to the point where it's paying for the site to operate rather than content.

Anyway, the problem should be fixed for a while. Just some food for thought.

I get a corporate discount from Dell if it comes down to getting a server.

I don't think I'ld build my own server because I don't have a powerful enough internet connection anywhere. More than likely rent one from hostgator but hopefully we'll be ok for a while to come.

That route requires a LOT of up front cost as you either have to purchase the server from them or provide it yourself. The only plus side is that it's a lower cost per month for hosting.
