Has anyone done this on a stock engine? I saw some dyno's for the 1.8 and it seemed to make a big difference for the low end. Anyone got any experience?

i have, and it made my 196,xxxk mile 1.6 feel a LOT stronger, especially on the top end. i beleive my timing is jumped up to like 18-19*, but not 100% sure. i had to back it back down to pass emissions (gwinnett FTL) and just advanced it as far as it would go when i finished the test.

note that i have a EBAY cone filter, 4-2-1 obx-style header/test pipe, and full exhaust from there back with no-name muffler that came on the car when i bought it.

I did it to my 96 and it was wonderful. Mind you, you'll have to run premium fuel, but honestly, on a typical fill up, you're looking at an extra $3. I doubt that extra $3 will make or brake your wallet (if it does, you have bigger problems to worry about lol).

On my 96, with 150xxx miles a cone filter, stock exhaust manifold, stock cat, bosal cat-back and 16* timing, i put down 115rwhp and 112 rwtq, pretty healthy if you ask me.

Pretty nice for n/a!

Just boost it and be done! lol

It surprised quite a few people... damn thing would scream off the line from a dig. I ran a friends MSProtege, killed him off the line but he barely got me on top end. lol I did later boost the car.

Consensus.... bunp your timing.

And that I shall...

I've never messed with timing before, how long does it take?

Doppelgänger
09-16-2008, 10:45 AM
about 5 min. All you need is a timing gun and a 12mm wrench (i think it's 12..maybe 13 or 11?)
If your coming to the meet on thurs and can bring a timing gun, i'll do it for ya.

yep, pretty sure it's 12. And from 10-14* advance, you don't really need to worry about premium fuel. If you start getting up to 16-18, then I would. PS, read the last issue of GRM, they have dyno testing of different advances. I believe either 16 or 18 gave the most increase in HP through the RPM range. I'd have to go back to check which, but you get the idea ;)

I think I've heard it's 16 also. It'll be ok with a tank of middle grade fuel before the jump to 93 right?

Anyone have a timing gun?

Anyone else ever have the mysterious disappearing timing marks? lol...

You can, if you want, calculate to run your tank close to E by the time you get to the meet on thurs, and by low i mean less than 1/4 tank. Then just fill up somewhere close with 93.

It should be lower by then. Today will be a back and forth to Atlanta trip and then Thursday to Gwinnett. Although it's currently at the point where I've got 72 miles and just on the full line. It'll plummet today though.

i run mid grade in mine and it doesnt ping or knock at all. mind you that i have ~196k miles on the motor and i dont think the compression is where it should be. you will DEFINITELY notice a difference when you bump it though. its the best thing since sliced bread. no joke.

but yeah, its a 12mm wrench. its kind of a ***** to get to and when ive done it, i had to use the old wrench hook trick to get enough leverage to break the bolt loose.

and no, kurt, nobody but you has weird *** problems like that. you fail. :D

Actually I have some motors where there are no marks left plus extra notches have appeared in the pulley making it very difficult to determine where the mark should be.
But youre right, after cleaning and figuring correct location whiteout seems to work well.

I need to play with it on the black car. I have never checked/touched it.
Hector set it for the PO and I never messed with it. Knowing Hector its probably at the oem spec.

Does anyone know if autozone loan out timing lights like they do with spring compressors?

Someone walked off with mine from when I worked at Honda, otherwise, I'd let you borrow it. I gotta find one too for when the engine goes back together.

What type should I be looking for, trying to discern the difference in the $110 one and the $40 one.

As long as it strobes properly based off your plug wire you're in good shape. I think some have some other features, but for basic use, get the basic tool. Wal-Mart has them for around $30.

I really, REALLY hope you were joking, but in the event that somehow you really did totally miss my point:

OPM has... more than a few miatas laying around. OPM has done work on countless miatas. I'm SURE they have a timing light you can borrow, and I'm sure one of the techs wouldn't mind spending the 2 minutes it takes to do it with you.

Or, you could follow this:

they do miatas? no fvcking way. i never ever knew that at all.

i know how to adjust ignition timing, i just dont own a timing light. however my friend matthew brueck (aka: matthew on this site), who lives about 50 yards from me, has one that i can use, athens is a hell of alot closer to jack than cumming is. were not working on my car, were working on his. mine has been advanced for a while now, i believe it hovers right around 17-18*.
