We need a thread where we can just shoot the poop about anything and everything.....
In reference to another thread on here I want to make a comment on drivers. I am all about raising the driving limit and making the driving test harder. We need to have driver's ed mandatory regardless of what age if you've never had a license before.

And retesting as people age. Passing one test when you're 16 doesn't mean you'll be a good driver 10, 20, 30 years from then. Besides, I know so many people who took 2 or 3 tries to pass their driving test.
I love old people but I don't like it when they run people over because they really should not be on the road. I know it's hard to depend on others but sometimes you just have to.

They should consider doing something like this, for each time you have to renew your license, you also have to take your exam again. I know that sounds retarded but I think it will keep a lot of people off the road that shouldn't be, especially senior citizens.
I also believe that the cost of your driver's license should be higher, to show people that it's a privilege to drive and a right.

I've been saying for awhile now, that there should be a special license for people with large trucks and SUVs (Expedition,Tahoe, F350,H1,H2,Escalade, Sequoia, Titan, Armada, Avalanche, Suburban..basically anything over 5000lb or over xx" wheelbase). Just because someone can pass a driving test in a Focus doesn't mean they can drive a LWB truck/SUV. And that taxes/insurance should be higher.

http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/atlanta/stories/2008/09/10/panhandling_atlanta_meters.html?cxntlid=homepage_t ab_newstab
So... let's get this straight... instead of putting that $40,000 to good use with current homeless shelters and other programs that make a difference, they buy five 'donation meters'. We're firing Fire Fighters, but we have the money (taken from some really random places...) to put these things in. And how the hell does it make sense to spend that $40K on FIVE meters? FIVE!? Really? 8 grand a pop? I wonder how long it'll take for those to simply make that 40 grand back... morons...
My favorite is the poll they have on the side bar on the left:
Would you be more likely to give money to a donation meter or to a panhandler?
-Donation meter
-Panhandler
That's as good a survey as asking somone if they would rather a) eat cheerios for breakfast, or b) eat nails for breakfast. It doesn't make sense. How about a 3rd option of "donate to charitable organizations", or a 4th "No, I'm a stingy bastard" option (really, I am)? <sarcasm> Noooo, I MUCH rather throw change at bums than at a 'donation meter'.</sarcasm> Seriously?

We just need some common sense implemented on the driving system. Harder tests, more restrictions, different license classes, different speeding fines for different classes, more tests, more enforcement over bad driving rather than simple speeding. Just copy Germany. American's are inherently bad drivers, they just haven't been trained or brought up with enough respect.

As for cell phones while driving, it should be illegal unless you have a headset. Today I saw a great example of it, girl on her cell phone is making a left turn with her phone between her head and shoulder, drink in the other hand and then she gets honked at by her friend in another suv sitting at the red light she just passed. AND this ****er was on the phone too and drinking!
Unbelievable.

I agree that the test should be harder, similar to the CDL test.
I am also 100% in favor of banning handheld cell phones while driving AND I hope that they don't drop the cell phone ban on airplanes. How freakin annoying would that be?
Final issue: smokers who flick their butts out the window of cars and/or drop thenm on the ground... stop littering, damn it.

As for the sheep comment...I quite agree. The stupidity of humans and how sheep like they are never ceases to amaze me. There are tons of examples but one that seriously concerns me is how easily citizens will give up their freedom for what they percieve as 'security' because theyr told it is...which isnt BTW, and how they will even beg for this erosion of their own freedom.
One idiot 'sheep' moves all the others follow...not having a freakin clue where theyre going.

What pisses me off the most about this country is how the people up top seem to completely abandon and ignore the principles this country were based on. The founding fathers were some liberal, free thinkers, and would definitely take action to fix a problem. Nowadays there's so much bureaucratic nonsense in the way nothing good can ever happen.
I wonder if the current people up top have even read the constitution.
JennB
09-12-2008, 10:48 AM
My take on the subject....
I love this country but I don't love the current state of society in this country. I absolutely adore the principles this country was founded upon, the ideals, the freedom, the maverick spirit but I think is has become so diluted and self serving that barely a glimmer of that spirit remains. The funny thing is you can still find that spirit in individuals but rarely the ones that have anything to do with leading this country.
Our founding fathers were thinkers, do-ers, renegade geniuses with a concrete goal of freedom and rights... life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. People like Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson never cease to amaze me. I could read Thomas Jefferson's writings all day and become energized... and then saddened by what has happened to his vision of a great country.
We still have a lot of freedoms and opportunities that countless others in the world will never have but the cost of some is becoming too great. I love that I as a woman can vote, own property, do anything I want, live, be successful and make my own path in life and I wish all women of the world could do so as well.
People have diluted the ideals of the founding of this country and twisted them to fit their own personal agendas. People take the idea of bearing arms to protect yourself from hostile forces as having the right to use a machine gun to hunt dear. Or to have so few regulations on gun ownership that I could go pick up a deadly weapon on a street corner if I have the cash. They twist the freedom of speech to mean they can say any sort of deplorable thing they like on the radio and scream obscenities in public. People have mistaken freedom for lack of decency. "It's a free country, I can do whatever the hell I want" replaces "I have the freedom to make my life better and live how I choose".
I think a lot of the laws and agendas of recent times are a downright disgrace to the constitution and the blood, sweat and tears that went into us even having the document and the freedoms that come with it.
More people vote for American Idol that the President and certainly more than vote for the Mayor or Governor. Ridiculous.

My known family came over as German's moving to a township in the late 1800's, looking for a better life. They built a farm with their own hands, raised their children to be good people and loved this country. My grandfather and his brothers fought in WW2 so this country, and this world could be a better place. My family moved here to become Americans. Since then we've had generations of business owners and people who really take pride in what they do.
So many people walking the streets of this country have no idea and no care for how and why it got here. They are far more concerned with the phone or their SUV or what's on TV tonight. People barely speak to each other without reason anymore, hospitality is a rare find. Waste runs rampant in the government and violence is in the streets. We're being robber whether we see it with our own eyes or not.
Don't even get me started on our education system. I'm ashamed when I talk to my coworkers from all over the world who speak at least two or three languages and I speak one. When I travel, I have to go out of my way to be as polite and thankful as possible so I am never one of those "rude American" tourists.

A primary branch of my family immigrated to the USA from Germany TO BECOME AMERICANS too. Thats another principle that has been largely lost....becoming American. My grandmother was brought up in a "Pennsylvania Dutch" home (which isnt Dutch but German) where German was the primary language, my great grandparents could speak English but struggled with it. Growing up I thought she was a teacher because she was a wizard with words and always correcting my speech, and many of my other family members were teachers, so I presumed she was as well. It wasnt until later that I learned that she went to school for only 3 yrs and taught herself to speak perfectly correct English from a dictionary and comparing a German Bible to an English one.
At age 17 she became a telegraph operator for the railroad...she tried teaching me Morse code but I never could 'get' it. lol...

People now come to America to live with people from their own country, speak their own language, keep their same customs and just make more money. So few take pride in becoming something more diverse. I, personally, cannot imagine living somewhere that I did not speak the language. I do not understand how or why someone would do such a thing. So many people come here and refuse to follow the laws of the country, they don't care to be here for anything other than for the cash.
Everyone in my family speaks English. My mom has told me about hearing older relatives speaking German when sh was a small child but they all spoke English as well.... you're not going to make it too far in South Carolina by just speaking German. lol.

Yeah old people rock. There is much that can be learned from them.
My grandmother lived to age 103. She was a hoot, always would speak her mind directly in a typical Germanic fashion....yet was able to maintain respectful. I am astounded still at how many people called her 'grandma' or 'aunt'...many who are not related at all but touched by her generosity or gently "lectured" by her at some point. She lived in the same house on the same street for 75 years in a town where my grandfather was the chief of the town counsel...what we would now call mayor.
As a side note...when flight 800 exploded leaving NYC the news media made many stories about a certain high school in PA. The french club, 21 people, from that school died on flight 800. They kept showing this scenic maple tree lined street and stone school were these kids were from. My grandmother lived on that street. My mother, uncles, and cousins all went to that school.
My grandfather made some brief political 'enemies' when he planted those maple trees lining those streets. :)

The problem is politics or rather self-serving unethical politicians have degraded the system to the point anyone decent would not be willing to participate. Think about, would you want to get involved with the current flock in Washington?
That leaves you trying to decide what is the lesser of the evils to choose from? Much more difficult than determining the best person.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for retaining and honoring your heritage but what's going on in this country now is divisive and downright crippling in some areas. People who cannot communicate with people in an emergency, cannot read the signs on the roads, cannot get a driver's license but drive anyway, people who can't call their child's teacher at school or do something as simple as call a theater to ask for movie show times or order take-out from a non-ethic restaurant. None of us are natives, we all have something to bring from our history but we have to live in the present as well. You can cook a traditional Polish meal or speak Polish at home but you've got to be able to function when you leave the house.
As you mentioned, it's not just language but culture. There are people in this very city that were born just a few hundred miles from me, speak the same language but I don't feel like I could talk to them, I think they would probably shun me if I did and I don't even feel safe trying. When i was in high school, I overheard a conversation of two black girls and one said something to the effect of "I don't hang out with white people". That was the first time in my life that it really hit me that some people really don't want to end racism and become one society. I was always raised to accept everyone and never judge by skin color and I couldn't believe that I had basically just heard someone say "Don't bother, we don't like you anyway." I was pretty unhappy thinking about the people who fought so hard for the rights and equality and young people these days don't seem to even care.

I have a new ramble/grumble...
Today has been an especially irritating day at work. Part of it is my own fault as I stayed out until around 1am helping my buddy drive and monitor the new build on his FD3S, but who wouldn't when the option of driving a 450hp street monster is available? So I'm fighting sleepiness, but then it just seems like everyone I've had to deal with took an extra dose of Idiot this morning.
And then the local buyer I had lined up to deliver the turbo and intercooler setup to tonight just let me know that he bought an FMII kit on eBay and didn't need the parts anymore. While I am completely understanding of buying a kit and having it all at once, now I'm temporarily screwed because I had carefully budgeted this whole build. So now I have a new GT2871R on the way to me, which I am happy about since I got an extremely good deal on it, but I won't have the money as quickly as I had planned to cover the amount missing from my bank account.
So how is everyone else's day?

Word of advice to those with Blackjack I's thinking of upgrading to Windows Mobile 6.... don't.
It goes through a 3 phase update. Phase 1 is the Boot stuff, upgrades no problem. Phase 2 is the PDA part, again no problem. Phase 3 is the phone section.... and this upgrade was meant to take no longer than 10 mins
And it's now been in phase 3 for almost an hour... I would turn it off and try and start again but I read of someone letting it go for ages before it worked. Some how I think I've got him beat. I really hope my phone doesn't turn into a brick...

If you really just payed $55.18 to fill up, you jsut got SEVERLY ripped off and you need to go chew someones *** hardcore.... im pissed just reading that!!!!! Why? Because even if your gas tank was EMPTY... as in.. the car wasn't even running, you would have had to pay $4.59/gal for 12 gallons. So let's say you put gas in when the light came on, that's ~2 gal left... so you'd put 10gal in you just paid $5.51/gal.... not $4.55. Even at 11gal fill up, you paid $5.01/gal.
You need to report them for gouging IMMIDATELY!!!
Think about it, you might have just payed about $5 over what you should have, but think of all the cars that put in twice as much gas at a fill up, that means that gas station is pocketing between $5 and $15 per car per fill up OVER the advertised price.

The CAS job is one that I've done so many times now, I have it down to an amazing 10 minutes at the most. Although it's much easier to do along with the valve cover gasket because the teeth on the CAS are easier to line up with the camshaft slots when you can see everything. lol You just have to be ready to work in a very confined space.
I tried getting the recommended size, but found after trial and error that ordering an OEM seal is the better way to go. Or the Viton seal that MiataRoadster sells. It's a good product too.

On one hand, I really don't want a depression and complete collapse of our lending market and on the other, I also don't like how quickly this is being pushed through and I am really worried about how this is going to effect our economy as well. The government will recover some if not all or more of this money since they will now partially own these companies but the American public still sees it as handing out their money, our debt still grows and what is going on with consumer confidence? And what happened to being responsible for the fate of your own business? The dollar falling is bad and I hope it will recover some in the next few weeks once the details of this bailout are disclosed.

This is how I view our country as it stands today...
Election:
If Obama wins, he'll be assassinated within a short amount of time and this will begin another racial exploitation.
If McCain wins, our country will stand in the same position we're in now as he has the same beliefs as our current president and the office won't see the much needed changes to get us back on our own two feet.
Economy:
Everyone can feel the drought of our economy. It has hit everyone hard. With out gas prices soaring with no indication to an end, this is only hurting us more. If we were to lower our gas prices, this would help our economy. Lower gas prices = more people being able to afford gas therefore going shopping more.
I could go on and on but I don't want to bore everyone....

Before the days of internetz for everyone I was involved in private owned BBS's that catered to various discussion. One BBS forum was for religion and politics. It had one VERY crucial rule that was ALWAYS vigorously enforced...no flaming...not even a tiny hint of it was allowed. One infraction got you a warning. The second got you banned and cost you your BBS membership. Discussion had to be confined to intellectual points. It was very profitable for learning and discussion. I really enjoyed it.
After many months of mind bending intellectual discussion several of the key members were mentioning something about an upcoming meeting, asking each other who was going to be there. When I inquired as to what meeting they were talking about it turned out to be a MENSA gathering. For someone that may not have heard of this its a society for people with 'genius' IQs so to speak, in order to be a member your IQ must measure at or above the 98th percentile.
They invited me to take the MENSA IQ test and join them, I declined. But, I did enjoy conversing with that bunch, even with those that disagreed on various points as it was always respectful.

well from what i can tell, the supply lines went back up right after the hurricane but manufacture went up later, but the supply for our area is very behind. now for the crazy part, it seems no one is willing to rearrange some of the more flexible supply lines to get a bit more gas to the gas starved areas
which is why only some areas are out while others have plenty

BTW, the pipeline is back up 100%, but all the idiots that are topping off "just because "are killing the supply for everyone else.
Oh I also want to give a big **** OFF to Charleston County Magistrate Court. I got a ticket last month for "not using my turn signal" to change lanes. Mind you it was 11pm on a VERY quiet 4 lane divided hwy and the only car was the cop in the other lane i got in front of....i was 60-70ft in front of him. Well I went to court to fight it, showed them a repair bill for the car, told them that I was driving my GF's car and that i don't normally drive the car and that my record is spotless. Well, Mr. **** Everyone Flynn didn't give two ****s to hear my side of the story. The cop lied to the judges face and said i pulled out right in front of him causing him to "brake suddenly". I even made the cop say he was going about 25mph as he approached me, but the cop said he was a bout 5 car lengths behind me... which still would have not caused him to "stop suddenly" for me. Fine was $134 and 2 points. ****ing duchebags.

It would make more sense to set up toll booths in some of these ****ty little towns and counties where they are busy gathering revenue. Its not about facts or safety, its about money. Mike,
I have a similar situation but with Carroll County. I got pulled over for doing 51 in a 35 (unmarked zone). To keep a long story short, this was my first ticket and the judge gave me 1-yr probation, $475 fine and 24-hrs community service. I also had to redo my CS a third time as the first one, the probation officer lost my documentation and the second time she said wasn't a non-profit organization. :(
So **** Carroll county as well.

Mike, sorry to hear that man! Back in the day when I had blue neons under my car (laugh at me, you know you want to), I got "pulled over" by the Fayetteville Police Dept., although I was already parked in a parking lot. Anyway, went to court to fight it, and because I had them on a switch, didn't matter that I was parked and in a lot and not on the street, they had the capability of flashing, therefore they were "Unauthorized Blue Lights" and I got a $465 ticket. Little po-dunk piece of **** towns like that suck.
Steve, that's messed up!
My **** OFF comment goes to the Cobb County Police Dept., who earlier this year claimed that I was street racing a Corvette, when all I did was accelerate from a stop light and cruise and the Corvette came up from behind and went flying around me. Yeah, must have been racing... Officer wrote 3 tickets, the only one that was valid was speeding, but then again, he wrote 60 in a 35, when it was a 45. Sorry, 3 lanes on one side of the road usually means 55. (Oh, and how the **** do you race a Corvette at 60mph?!) Spent the night at the "Corrections Facility", which by the way, if anyone offers you the chance to do that, pass it up. DUI offenders in there were getting $700-$1000 bails, where mine was set at $3,500. Took it to court, they dropped two charges and left the Reckless charge, $500 fine, and 4 points. The whole time I wanted to say, "Honestly, if I was racing that Corvette, you would have never caught me," but I kept my mouth shut. **** still pisses me off beyond belief. Oh, and this put the first blemish on my ****ing clean driving record (the Fayetteville thing was non-moving). I've been stopped plenty, but have always had the luck of the cop not showing up, or in the case of the 2 accidents I had when I was 16 and 17, the other people not showing up. Luck ran out I guess.

I hate PTCPD. They will come up with the most ridiculous things ever. I got stopped there and was told my Miata was not street legal because it was lowered. Been driving for just shy of 10yrs and most of them were within the first 3-4 years. Most of them were smaller stickets... none of them have been racing or reckless driving.... stuff like too fast for conditions, failure to maintain lane, 14mph or less speeding, failure to yield...**** like that...all 2-3 point tickets. My biggest one was Hall Co. saying was was doing 96 in a 70... on a onramp. Actually, come to think of it, i got a 'reckless driving/laying drags' ticken in Jefferson. You know what they did when i got into it with them... said i need to "pay a $450 fine today and we'll drop the charges to a local ordinance violation so it won't show up on your record".
