Anyone? I'll post mine if you post yours. :butt:

What are you shooting with? How long have you been into photography?

I've got a Nikon D60 that I've been having fun/learning on, it's got a 18-55mm lense with vibration resistance. It's good fun, I need to go out and take some more artsy pictures though.

Here is a pic I took of a S2K Atlanta member's Noble M400 that joined us on a mountain run. He was spitting oil all over us and the motor eventually blew a couple months later.

That bloke(Mr. Awesome or Tyler if you prefer) happens to be one of the absolute fastest people at Deal's Gap. He was kicking *** in WERA(amiture motorcycle racing) this season until he broke his arm. He however hardly runs the gap anymore b/c his sponsers prefer him not to, making this photo is a rare sight.

Canon L 24-70. Cameras are a lot like cars. Money spent can definitely improve things, but much like the bad driver, somebody with far less equipment can always shoot the better photo. Photography continues to challenge me. Like racing, I always see room for improvement. Probably one more reason why there seems to be a lot of car people with cameras.

What are you using to post process? Are you shooting RAW? If you're shooting JPEG its gonna be hard to get REALLY sharp pics. If you shoot RAW you have to Post Process for ultimate sharpness...but yeah, a 5k camera with a $1200 lens is going to help too. :) Though, I agree that the photog is at least as important as what he/she shoots with...

MeFryRice

I would suggest downloading the trial version of Adobe Photoshop Elements 7. You can download and try the full version for 30 days for free. There are also a ton of freeware/shareware programs out there, but nothing is going to be as widely supported as Photoshop....

JennB

I want a 1 D

To tell you the truth, I rarely do any kind of processing to my photos. I'm terribly impatient and really want them to just come out the way I want instead of spending tons of time making the pic something else. I see some really awesome photos online but at the same time, you can tell the whole picture is only good because someone is really handy with photoshop. Actually, I totally suck at using photoshop so that's half of my frustration.

According to my camera, I've taken 7500 pics in the past year. I put a lot of time into taking each photo as well. No click and hope. I really try.

I need to start shooting in RAW now that I think I've got a pretty good grasp on most aspects of taking the actual photo. More and more practice is what I want... and eventually a really, really nice camera setup.

Its hardly cheating. Current electronic post processing is the same as old dark room developing. Sure, you can alter a picture so far from its original state that it becomes a completely new picture, but unless someone portrays it as the way it came out of the camera its not cheating. You also will almost never see a really impressive picture, shot RAW, that is unprocessed. Its called a RAW format for a reason. Unsharp mask in photoshop is widely used for sharpening pictures, just make sure to create a new layer and mask. Also use sharpening selectively and moderately. There are tons of tutorials on the web. Some of my favorites are the video tutorials you can download for free through Itunes. If you have a camera and its capable of shooting RAW, you are really doing yourself a disservice if you don't at least learn to use it when you want/need to....

For you photography/camera nuts, I know someone selling a Nikon D70S in pristine shape and they are including a Nikon ED 70-300 Zoom Lens all for $350. I've read some reviews online, and about 75% of reviewers and consumers liked it, but this was in 2005-6.
I realize it's a better deal than most you'd find on the net now, but I'd like to know if anyone has any experience with the camera and lens, or one like it. Seems a lot of Nikons resemble each other. The only complaint I read about the lens is it tends to curve straight lines as the extreme range of the zoom.

Most long zoom lenses have a barrel distortion issue at the far end of the zoom. The D70 was a nice camera in its day, nothing wrong with it now either. The only issue you may face is that Nikon is moving its consumer level DSLRs away from in body motor driven lenses. The D40 and D60 both need lenses with the motor built in to autofocus. For just a little more money, you can find a newer camera too though.

Jenn I hear ya... it takes way more time to post process than it does to take the pics, and it can be painful. BUT I look at it as being just like the film days and spending all that time in the dark room (what Belvn said). It's the same thing, just smells better and is a lot easier than playing with the enlarger and then developing to see what you got. Oh, and no "undos". ;) IMO the good photo comes from a well planned, technically correct shot and post processing of the same standard. So shoot RAW. :D

I didn't buy my 1D new- got it used. There's pros and cons, because a lot of the current prosumer cameras have features and capabilities that the used 1D mkII has at a similar price. Maybe not all, but a lot. I used my dad's 1Ds and that made my decision. Though I still stand by my comment regarding better lenses first. For example Canon D60s in excellent condition with less than 10k exposures sell for $200... that leaves a lot of dough for a decent lens. Even if it's something like canon's prime f1.8 50mm, which is incredibly sharp. I have one for that reason and it's tiny, weighs nothing and is fast at f1.8. Oh, and it's $100 new. A zoom is not a must. And buying used is another opportunity to pick up good glass at a heavy discount. It's a lot like cars- some just want the newest one and are willing to ditch the old one at whatever loss when they get the latest greatest model.

Here's some excellent sites with lens rating systems. I recommend going here before buying.
Lens Performance Survey (http://www.photozone.de/active/survey/surveyform.jsp?filter=%22brand=%27Canon%20EF%27%20 OR%20brand=%27Sigma%20AF%27%20OR%20brand=%27Tamron %20AF%27%20or%20brand=%27Tokina%20AF%27%20or%20bra nd=%27Vivitar%20AF%27%22&title=%27Canon%20EF%20(EOS)%27) (linked to Canon lenses)
PhotoDo (http://www.photodo.com/products.html) (just drive down with the links)

That's kinda what I was thinking. I read some complaints about noisy and slow parts. I'm really happy with my Sony DSC-H3 for now, it's a good point and shoot, just want something to compete with the nicer pictures I see sometimes that come from the DSLRs. Just like to jump on a good deal when it comes along too. I'll wait on this one.

And the expense of photo paper... I remember those days. Though I loved being in the darkroom. I think it focused me more than sitting at a computer since I do it aaaaalllll day.

I actually don't even know if I could handle a 1D or similar camera. My hands aren't big enough to hold the darn thing  . I've been thinking about a 40D a lot lately.

BTW, where do you look for used equipment? I see it here and these but don't know of a really reliable, consistent place to browse.

Developing a livable workflow for RAW conversion and PP is a must. I am still wrestling with it. I really like lightroom and its has dramatically improved my throughput for doing basic (and even not so basic) post processing. As for buying used stuff, craigslist and flickr (Atlanta Photographers Guild) as well as KEH in Alpharetta are some of my regular places to check. Oh and I love my 40D!!! Though if were buying now, and didn't have any other lenses for Canon, I would seriously consider the Nikon D90...or the new Canon 50D

Since I've sold my XTi not too long ago, I've been considering moving to a 50D, what do you guys think?

I think you should buy a Miata first.

I've gotten to use one since they came out, very, very nice camera overall.

I think the 50D is a no brainer, though, it didn't make me want to go through the hassle of selling my 40D and spending another $300....

I played around with one a little. Really nice. Personally, I was thinking 40D with a bit more money to spend on lenses though.

It appears the Miata has less body roll than the Lotus, but then again, the Lotus is taking the turn rather sharply...

The miata appears to be under steering a little...

I think he just took a different line. Most people came out quite wide and then in real tight on that hair pin. The lotus was alot tighter on entry.

I also think the miata driver was a little more skilled as I am pretty sure he was posting better times than the lotus...
