What do you listen to??

Okay, so I am old and blunt, I'll say it for you, I dont like country music, hip hop, rap crap (which really isnt music), or the like...and I do like classic & hard rock ('oldies' for you youngsters) :D

Faves include:
Rush, Led Zeppelin, Bad Company, Styx, Boston, Black Sabbath,
Dio, Judas Priest, and many others.

For newer modern bands I like:
Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, Alter Bridge, Staind, Saving Abel, Back Door Slam, and more.

Chick bands: Heart!! Thats it. lol... in fact if you want to hear any live Led Zeppelin tunes performed these chicks do it well....plus Nancy is hot playing guitar. ;)

Bands that seem not to fall in any of the first catogories:
Joe Satriani, Dream Theater, and various prog metal.

Genres that I enjoy include:
Blues, blues rock, 60's-80's hard rock and metal, classical, jazz, prog metal, alternative, but mostly I like plain old unvarnished blues based guitar driven rock n roll. I am a huge fan of 'cover' tunes. I collect rock tunes played by artists other then the original band/writers.

When I was a young fellow I worked for a 'metal' band. They played progressive style rock in the form of Rush but with a Black Sabbath, Ted Nugent, & Yes flavor. In addition, they covered Rush, Sabbath, Nugent, Hendrix, Joe Walsh, Van Halen, and many others.

I drove the truck, ran the stage lights, and was the drum tech. I spent many nights sitting on or next to a huge pile of speakers with rock music pumping through them amplified at 5, 10, or 20 thousand watts...or some mega number. Of course I did this without the benefit of any hearing proection, so that, along with firing 44 magnums without ear plugs, has left me with a nice case of partial hearing impairment. Just so you know, I am not senile, I just cant always hear what youre saying! LOL....

Current Albums I recommend:

Alter Bridge - Blackbird
http://www.amazon.com/Blackbird-Alter-Bridge/dp/B000VKJ6VS

Back Door Slam - Roll Away

Staind - The Illusion of Progress

I'm listen to mostly classic/hard rock and modern rock. I can stand a little country music or hip-hop, but mostly older stuff there. I also like a very specific set of techno/electronica artists (whatever you want to call it), such as Paul Van Dyke, Paul Oakenfold, Juno Reactor, and The Prodigy. Never really listen to those in huge doses though. And I can't stand the crap that's just repetitive beats and sounds.

I also love going to concerts. I've met (and gotten a ton of stuff signed by) Trapt, Nickelback, Three Days Grace, Chevelle, Seether, Flyleaf, Halestorm, Shinedown, and had lunch with Crossfade and Breaking Benjamin before a show, and I just scored tickets to see Buckcherry and Saving Abel on October 9th at The Tabernacle.

SexPistols > Ramones :P

I have a very broad taste in music, and I change obsessions pretty often. I do agree with most others, NO country, Very little "rap".
Right now, I'm going back to my 90's punk roots with some Millencolin, Face to Face, Vandals ect...
All in the wake of an odd Metal stage...

General tastes include: Punk/Metal/Blues/Folk/Bluegrass/Jam
Honestly, if I can tell that a musician is passionate about what he/shes doing, I can get into it.

I started off with the true Brit rock of the 90's, which I'm sure is very surprising

I listen to pretty much everything except for country and crap ***** sound like Dave Matthews and Jack Johnson.

I'm big into techno - trance, dnb, dance, house and all that at the moment. And I won't lie, I do like rap, just not the stuff you hear on the radio all the time.

And of course, 80's!

Oh dear.. this could get long.

I've always been really into music. My tastes are all over the place and I have been digging deep for good stuff since I was in my very early teens. First concert (that I didn't attend with a family member or something like that) - Fugazi (January 1993). Most recent concert - Nine Inch Nails (about 3 weeks ago).

I probably listen to Tool more than anything else but my ipod is full of years and years of music that I love.

Examples:

Rock bands, traditional and not such as:
Tool
A Perfect Circle
Nine Inch Nails
Phish
Spoon
Muse
Bad Religion
Band of Horses
Descendants
Swervedriver
Self
Pixies
Fugazi
Idiot Pilot
Radiohead
Stone Roses

I listen to some rap/hip hop but definitely none of the crap that is on the radio these days. I like old Outkast, anything by the Beastie Boys, old west coast NWA type stuff and even some terribly ghetto fabulous Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Three Six Mafia and Trick Daddy sometimes. There are a ton of rap artists that I have one or two songs from on my ipod but a lot of the stuff I can't listen to for too long.

I also have a nice little collection of vinyl at home. I used to spin drum and bass waaaay back in the day but I still listen to it a lot. I'm really into Evol Intent, Dom, old Konflict stuff, I really like a lot of the new dubstep that is out as well as the really hard stuff that is being produced these days. I love the early 90's old school stuff that got me into DnB as well as some stuff from the late 90's. There was a bit of a lull in 2003, 2004-ish where all I listened to was old stuff because I didn't like the new stuff but it's a lot better now. I still like Tricky and the Prodigy as well, though neither are DnB. And of course I love Squarpusher... no idea where to categorize him though... lol.

I can enjoy most any type of music if it takes talent and has soul behind it though. I love jazz and have been to jazz clubs and festivals in many cities around the US. I love bluegrass. Well, I can't say I own any right now but I do enjoy it quite a bit. I know tons about really obscure bands and artists, toooooons about old punk since I was really into it for years and years and still listen to it. Hell, I even know a lot about straight edge hardcore and have seen Earth Crisis 4 times... that usually surprises people. I saw a lot of bands like Offspring and Green Day in tiny clubs with 200 people back before they were ever on the radio. (I've totally lost my love for Green Day but I still love Offspring. They put on a hell of a show) Saw Pennywise, NOFX, All, Helmet, tons of bands that I am really glad to have experienced.

The ipod probably has about 200 different artists on it and I'm about to add a lot more. I'm pretty slack about updating it.

I'm not the girl you want to go up against in music trivia. (Mike can attest to all of the free pizza we've had at Mellow Mushroom trivia nights because of this fact). If you ever need to ask someone about anything from traditional rock to hip hop to shoegazer pop to obscure electronica to 80's music and disco all the way back to 60's rock and even some big band... I'm your girl. Ha.

Well that's good to know for pizza. I'm thoroughly enjoying the latest Ministry of Sound Garage Classics of the summer... how I wish we had this stuff getting played here.

Yeah.... don't taunt Jenn with Music trivia!!

I myself... oh boy. I first started listening to grunge back ~91 92 when a friend of mine introduced me to Nirvana. Now I listen to a lof of things. I played in several bands when i was a teen too and I also played in my school's orchestra from 6th grade up to when i left highschool... i played the cello ( but also play bass buitar, upright bass, guitar and can hold a beat on the drums). So that even gives me a soft spot for classical/ochestra music. A lot of what i listen to is:

Tool (probably being my favorite pick if i had to pick one band to listen to)
A Perfect Circle
Failure (GREAT 90's band and if you listen to Perfect Circle and know "the nurse who loved me" - that was orignally done by Failure)
Idiot Pilot
Filter
311
Sublime
NIN
Toadies
Weezer
Beastie Boys
old Blink 182
The Vandals
Muse
old Korn
Suicide Machines
Primus
Rage Against the Machine
Unwritten Law
Deftones
The Urge
Social Distortion

Then there is some rap/hop-hop that i don't mind... old snoop/jay-z/Dre/WuTang etc... I also don't mid some of the old classics like J. Cash/Zepplin/Hendrix/Beatles/Iron Maiden/old Metallica/BOC. I'm not really a fan of country/pop/cheezy techo (i.e. house) and i really hate most of this new wannabe thug rap bull****.

Being the self serving kind of guy that I am I like anything I can play and get paid for! I lead a two/three piece acoustic duo and we play damn near every weekend in one little joint or another.

Those of you who are into internet radio , check out Hounddogradio.net... We've done some live shjows in the studio there and recently played a benefit at Blind Willie's in Va Highlands for them. I have also been known to co host the Saturday night show on occasion..

That said I listen to a pretty wide variety of music. I'm no fan of country or rap but anything else is fair game

Something different...

If youre into Christmas themes, rock n roll, with a splash of classical and Broadway...I recomend this upcoming show....

Trans Siberian Orchestra
Sun. Nov. 16 at Phiilips Arena, Atlanta, GA

I have seen them several times, always entertaining. The best show I have ever seen them perform was when they played at the Fox Theater. I dont like Phillips Arena...but the band is cool. Very talented bunch of artists gathered together.

Guess I'm the only metalhead here!

Fortunately, I also listen to a lot of other stuff, like rock (classic, progressive, grunge, etc), jazz, and a tiny bit of hiphop or techno.

I've been to way too many concerts to list.

I've been playing bass and guitar since 1994. I've dabbled on drums now and then as well. I'm currently in a metal band (the link in my sig).

I listen to rock(but whats on the radio gets old and starts to sound the same), classic rock all day from elton john to the stones, country(not cookie cutter bull**** that is mostly played on the radio), rap(again not cookie cutter bull**** that is played on the radio), chill/reggae ish bands like 311, sublime, OAR and mostly metal! My favorite band is Killswitch Engage, also big ones are Lamb of God, Through the eyes of the Dead, As I lay Dying, In Flames, Bullet for My Valentine(light metal), Trivium, and August burns red to name a few. As far as musical talent goes all i can do is play guitar hero/rockband(i'm a geek) and i used to play trombone through my middle school days, I am a HORRIBLE singer, tone def i suppose, and i cant keep a rythm...wanna start a band? lol

Man, my musical tastes are so diverse I don't know where to start....

I listen to lots of different genres of music, but aside from classic rock and dance/trance/house there are maybe one or two artists within each genre that I will listen to on a regular basis. I dabble in older hip-hop, peruse industrial from time to time, swing around to classical for a bit, get stuck on a single artist/album in any given genre for weeks at a time, and then maybe settle on some lo-fi whilst cleaning my camera gear and guns.

I'll work on compiling a list, but it's going to be so crazy I'm almost afraid to do it

Oh yeah, I absolutely CAN'T STAND new rap/hip-hop (with VERY few exceptions), country (Eagles don't count), and whiney college boy music (gavin degraw, etc).

I am ashamed (or not) to say I don't know of a single new band that I'm excited about, can't even name the ones played on the radio because it does not catch my ear. I do listen to WRAS, and have since '72 or so, and enjoy about half of their playlist. They were my absolute favorite station way back in the late '70s when the punks took it over and held total control 'til about 80 or so when the school took it away from them. I started listenening close to music back about '66 or so, and like all the old rock (Hendrix was my favorite, saw him at the Atlanta Pop Festival in '70) and the usual and unusual classic rock, then morphed to punk and new wave in the '70s and into the 80's and was big into the local scene (Brains, B-52s, Pylon, Swiming Pool Cues, Guadalcanal Diary). Got married to a stick in the mud and gradually lost touch with the scene.

Recently remarried and she likes the music scene (although not all that I like, but she tolerates mine Ok). So we are starting to go to clubs again when we can. I still like the old guys, love the new Jeff Back CD, and the latest Who album from a couple years ago. Right now mourning the loss of the guitarist for Pylon and the guitarist for the Stooges. A real shame about both.

Oh yeah, last weekend when it rained all day I got out the Ramones DVD "It's Alive" and rocked for hours. Drove the wife and kids nuts but I loved it. Damn I miss too loud rock'n'roll shows. I think tonight we're gonna go see Dave Ridarick (ex-bass player for Riggs, if any of y'all remember the movie "Heavy Metal) and his latest band. I'll be deaf and hungover tomorrow.

And no country or rap for me, either.

^^^^ I'd go just for Tool and Alice in Chains.

I saw Green Day around the same time you did. I was already in high school...so that show was fun, because I got to throw around a bunch of little kids in the mosh pit!

I TRIED to see AIC back in '94, when they were on tour with Metallica, Candlebox, and Suicidal Tendencies....but of course Layne had to go back into rehab, and they were replaced with Fight (Rob Halford's band at the time). The show was OK, but it would have been WAY better with AIC.

I almost got to see them the last time they toured (with the new singer), at a secret show at the HoB in Orlando (my Mom works at the box office there). But it turned out to be an acoustic show, and I would have had to leave Augusta at the asscrack of dawn to catch it. I like AIC, but I generally hate acoustic versions of anything, so I didn't make it.

Speaking of grunge though....if the current metal band I'm in doesn't last too long, I'm SERIOUSLY considering forming a grunge cover band. I think I could make some decent money if I found the right front man...and I'd finally have a reason to dust off my old combat boots!

I saw them three times in 92 and 93. I was lucky that those shows were all ages... I did a lot of sneaking into shows back in the day. lol

I honestly couldn't believe when they got popular. Before that, the preppy kids at my school made fun of us for wearing Green Day and Offspring t-shirts. We were not happy when the kids we hated were now listening to the music we loved.

Hell yea... Something about the music that came out in the late 80s and early 90s seems to me to be the best. All the best Ska, Punk and Grunge all came out during that time period, let alone bands were still completely influenced by all the great old school rock. It seems like 90% of the crap that comes out now days there is just no heart in the music anymore.

Hmmm...lemme take a wild guess here, you were middle school/HS age range then? ;)

Every generation thinks their music is the best based upon that 'formula'.
It has alot to do with when the mind is impressionable and other factors I think.

My older siblings think Tommy James & The Shondells, Sam the Sham & The Pharaohs, Cream, etc etc are the best ever. :D

metalman

More on that thought....

To me the most influential and 'best' music of the last century grew out of the 60's.
Super groups like The Who, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath etc.
The influence of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Deep Purple etc etc. This kind of phenomenon will never exist in pop/rock music again I dont think.
And then those influences carried forward by the bands of the 70's... Aerosmith, Rush, Boston, Montrose, Van Halen, Styx, Kansas, Judas Priest, and so many countless others....each within a different style of rock ranging from pop to metal and prog.
The 80s was a rather dead period to me, with but a few new bright lights like Metallica etc, with the influx of new wave euro-garbage, and then silly hair metal no talent crap like Poison etc. But even that band is just a silly cartoon caricature of 60's/70's rock. But thats how I see it. :D

Yea that would be a good guess. Granted I know my view is somewhat basis but I also look at it, as nothing since then has even tried to be new or original. Yea I know what I enjoy it's really original but atleast you can tell they had influences and tried to blend the two styles together..aka Ska.. you can hear the blend of Reggie/Jazz(aka the horns) mixed with punk/rock

Well depends on how you view best but I will always agree that the music that came out of the 60s and 70s would be the best for its influential value. Whether or not someone likes the greats like Who, Zeppelin, Sabbath etc, it is hard to disagree that 90% of the music that has come out since the 80s was massive influenced by the greats.

Granted there will always be a place for the great "classics" of modern music, but granted I grew up on all that. :D

For the metal heads.

The new Born of Osiris is much more melodic and traditionally structured. They've taken a progressive metal turn, but I don't think they've done it successfully.

I prefer the first album as it contains sporadic break beats, interesting key board interludes, better dual harmonies, and enough time changes to keep the songs from getting repetitive.

This album seems to focus more on the metal and less on the death-core aspect of their music. That's not a problem to me. It should have been a good addition to their discography, but the songs just don't seem as inspired. I think they started experimenting with a new sound and lost their focus.

On the other hand, if you like folk-death/folk-metal then Eluveitie is a band you must check out! They keep getting their sound better and more distinctly theirs with each successive album. They also have a fairly new album that's completely acoustic. It concentrates exclusively on the traditional folk music that they usually combine with the death metal. It's also very good. You should give it a listen.

If you don't like heavier music, you should probably avoid anything I've suggested above.

I also learned Brain Drill has broken up.......

I'm probably the only person on this board that has any idea what you're talking about! I just got the new Born of Osiris, haven't listened to it yet.

The bassist in Brain Drill is awesome, could tell just by that riff right at the beginning of that song.

You should check out my (old, but soon to be remade) band, Hollowmass. There's a link in my sig, and you can also download other songs from here:

The second half of "46lbs" is pretty heavy. And if you're into something more epic, check out "Something Cruel."

I'll hopefully have something recorded from the new version of the band....the songs we're writing now are WAY heavier.

Lols. I was thinking there were a few more people into it around here, but you're probably right.

Anyway, I didn't mean for my B.O.O. review to sound as harsh as it came out. There's definitely a lot of good in the new album, but I think the next album will be the one to really anticipate. Be ready for things like the end of a song transitioning from a Dimmu Borgir style gothic blast beat to sort of a blackened deathmetal rap rock outro.......yep..

I hadn't noticed your sig link before, so I'll go check it out sometime.

Naw. To me, Blink was actually MORE Blink pre-Barker. I think Enema and everything thereafter is decent, but more radio structured. It sounded to clean and produced.

The true pop-punk sound was with the original drummer. You had your E.P./demos like flyswatter and Buddha. Then Cheshire Cat and Dude Ranch.

If you start bringing in production qualities that are too good it looses a lot of the punk aspect and just ends up being....well pop.

The true pop-punk sound was with the original drummer. You had your E.P./demos like flyswatter and Buddha. Then Cheshire Cat and Dude Ranch.

If you start bringing in production qualities that are too good it looses a lot of the punk aspect and just ends up being....well pop.

ive never undestood why some people think that. theres a difference between bands who record music with good sound quality and those who change their sound to fit the recording qualities. they definitely didnt lose any of that on Enema or Take Off Your Pants, they just progressed. you cant expect a band to sit around and make 10 years worth of music that all sounds exactly the same, it gets boring and repetitive. the self titled album to me seems over-produced at first but if you really listen to it its still blink, they just decided to try something different.

That sounds funny to me, considering they've been around since 1988! But I get what ya mean. I dig some NIN, too.

Have you seen them lately though? Still rocking like a decade or two ago. It's hard to believe how old some of the music is, it still sounds so relevant. Mike told me he read a quote from Trent saying he was stopping so he didn't end up like Kiss. Putting on makeup and doing a little circus dance for the fans.. something to that effect. I get it and I totally respect it.

Nah, Chashire Cat and Dude Rach were good, quality 'we spent our time working on our sound', Enema started sounding more of what the producer/racord label wanted to push and after that it was all kinda trendy. Korn is another example of a band doing this...their self-titled album was not bad, but their latest stuff is a 180* turn around from how they used to be...and not for the better. 311 has gone through a good bit of evolution too..but it's not a bad one. NIN on the other hand, yeah, Trent has managed to keep the one-of-a-kind sound that makes NIN without making everything sound the same. Tool has also kept their signature style...which is why I love Tool. When Maynard wanted to do something a little different, we got APC..which was equally as great and I wish he would go back into the studio with both Tool and APC. One band that has disappointed me with their "new" stuff is Linkin Park...I want to kick whoever is putting the Prozac in their water. Green Day, though, has to be the prime example of evolutionary sound fail...I can't stand them now...total crap.

Another bad that got some airplay, but never made it "big"..and really kicks ***, is Local-H. They're had like 6 albums an only a few tracks have made it to the radio, yet they still have their own sound.

Yeah, here is the article that is creating quite the uproar in the industry....it seems Trent struck a few nerves with it

Article from CageRattle-
Trent Reznor has further explained that while the current Nine Inch Nails tour is the band’s last, he has no plans to retire from music making. The NIN main man said that the group “as a touring live band or live band that’s on the road all the time is stopping. I’ve just reached the point… where it has invaded every other aspect of my life. Also I think creatively, my time would be better spent on other stuff that could be NIN or outside NIN. Some of it may be collaborative things. I have a number of projects that are not music-related which I have put on the back burner for a long time…”
He continued, “I’d never want to be Gene Simmons, an old man who puts on makeup to entertain kids, like a clown going to work… In my paranoia, I fear that if I don’t stop this, it could become that. Because it’s nice to get a paycheck, and now the only way to get a paycheck is to play live, so it’s all those things swirling around in my head.”
As for the state of the music industry, Reznor said that “To see that system collapse is an exciting thing. There isn’t a clear answer on what the right thing to do is right now, and as a musician you’re up against a pretty difficult scenario: most kids feel it’s OK to steal music, and do freely… The good news is that people are excited and interested in music.” He added, “There are ways that you can monetize your business, but the traditional way of going to a record store and having to pay for it, those days are over. In the States, there aren’t any record stores left. The only place… is like a Best Buy where you go to buy a washing machine and there’s a tiny rack of DVDs and CDs. I think we’re in between business models right now.”

^^^^He hit the nail on the head. Even with people buying CDs on iTunes, the downfall of paying for music is well on it's way. Add to that a fresh generation of kids who, through Guitar Hero and Rock Band, have discovered that they might have what it takes to play instruments/sing, and the next 10-15 years in the music industry are going to be very different from the way things were just 10 years ago.

There's a damn good reason why I gave up ever trying to "make it big" through music a long time ago. I know I could make a living playing in a cover band, doing weddings and corporate gigs, and I may in fact do that eventually, but a "record deal" is never going to happen. I know several bands who have been "signed," and most of them receive ZERO support from the label. These guys are touring like 8-9months out of the year, splitting $300-400 a night between 5 people, living out of a ratty van. And they've been doing it for YEARS.

But anyway, it'll be interesting to see what Trent Reznor does. He's a pretty intelligent dude, and it's safe to assume he'll always have a pretty wide fan base.

I actually said that some of the stuff of their later albums was good. I even said the Enema, and TOPAJ were decent. They just lost the punk sound.

I think bands progressing is great. I don't want them to be miserable.

When it comes to punk you CAN judge a band on things like recording quality because it's supposed to sound a little rough around the edges. It's supposed to sound "do it yourself." If your sound doesn't make me think of 3 dudes traveling all over the U.S. living out of a ****ty little van, then it's not true punk to me. It can sound punk, and it can sound good. It's just not punk anymore. Part of that music is the life style. It may sound corny, but it's true.

From Ashes Rise=Punk. Blink=radio flavored punk.

well any older than enema of the state doesnt count as blink in my eyes because it was pre travis barker, therefore its not blink. he kinda brought the band together.

See that just kinda backwards thinking.. That would make it NEW blink as he change the band and I will agree with that. But anything pre Travis Barker would be old Blink and everything after would be new blink. Now you may enjoy older new blink.

I will agree with Mike that most bands tend to conform to what the label thinks is the best sound. Which really sucks cause it tends to be different then what got the public attention to start with so then we as a mass get bored with the band, as they start to sound just like everything else.

I will have to disagree with Mike on KoRn. Yes they have evolved and grown and may not be for the best, but the weird part is their evolution is not because of a label. Now days the evolution of the band is purely the bands choice as they are free from a major label, and are more self producted. Thou it is still noticeable on Follow the leader how much the record label got them to merge in other sounds. With that said, I still pefer the old CDs to the new stuff but I do still enjoy a few songs from the newer stuff.

That band is a collection of individuals doing a 'cartoon' of 80's hair metal.
The lyrics are funny as hell.

Priest was cool. Probably the most laid back crowd I have ever seen at
one of their shows. This is a 30th anniversary of their album British Steel so they played the entire album. That meant some songs I havent heard them perform in years.
Halford's best vocal performance of the night was on "Victim Of Changes".
The old guy can still do it. My boy thought it was all badass and especially liked "Nostradamus". I think one day when I am dead and gone my kids will remember
fondly the time their old man took them to a Priest show. ;)

One last edit...while agree he's a total badass...I think a lot of his stuff (especially this solo), just sounds like a bunch of clicking. It might be the crappy speakers I'm listening to it with right now...but I dunno, I think he's a little overrated.

I do agree, it all seems a bit sloppy and choppy, but he is still a god on bass, like this amazing grace solo, pretty good stuff. And yes, his faces do not give him any extra points.

I need to see them bad!! Lucky you.

I took the afternoon to catch up on some music I've been missing out on. Here's the albums I've got so far.

Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
Passion Pit - Mannors (checkout "Sleepyhead" on youtube)
Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadaus Phoenix
Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros (check out their performance on Letterman)

I know it's all bearded indie stuff but I'm a sucker for bearded indie stuff.

Not much music being made these days that trips my trigger.
I have been listening the new Alterbridge and Saving Abel stuff.
And for kicks I DL'd the new Krokus...the Swiss AC/DC, and a throwback to the 70s-80's.

Well the two bands are very similar in music style and sound. Marc Storace, Brian Johnson, and Bon Scott all have (had) similar voice qualities.
Krokus has been around since the early 70s and after seeing AC/DC they changed their sound to be like theirs. You can fool some people with some of their songs telling them its AC/DC so it seems to fit.

I think the term 'indie' is largely misused. Some think its a genre.
It merely means independently produced. :)

I still say thats a misuse. :) A slang term as it were.
People like the artist I posted, DC Slater, consider themselves indie artists, even support their causes etc, but certainly dont fit the freakadoo (my slang word ;) ) genre that kids tend to refer to when using that term. He is a virtuoso rock guitarist. I have some long term musician friends who are also indie, but their genre is actually symphonic 'prog' rock. Another guitarist friend is also indie, and his genre is also rock, prog rock. His music has a 70s/80s rock feel in a similar vein as Rush.
I have this same argument with my kids, the term indie implies much more then how the term is used by kids these days. ;)

And more power to him, but nonetheless, the term 'indie' is now a slang used to describe a genre of music. And we 'kids' are aware of the wider meaning, but this is how it's more commonly used 'these days.' ;)

I'm a kid these days and I classify music based on sound and not appearance. There are so many genres that use the word "indie" to describe a certain type of their music. Your indie and someone else's indie might be totally different.

Exactly. Not really the mark of a genre.
The term indie can in no way even refer to a single genre. Because that word actually refers to production, not style or sound.
Such the case when one substitutes an incorrect English word in place of a correct one.

This is more a discussion of "then" and "now." it DID refer to production, NOW it refers to style and sound. There's no official written document saying this, it's just how it is "these days." I don't really see what the big deal is. It's just an adjective used to describe something. So what if it was used differently back in your day? Things change!

Dr.Drew
01-05-2011, 07:05 PM
But it's the same now Bones. For instance, there is now a such thing as "indie metal" that sounds nothing like the bands you listen to. Yet it's followers, here in 2011, refer to it as "indie."

Or what about "indie hip-hop?" We like roughly the same types of music from what I've gathered but I get irritated when people call it indie. Sometimes it's alternative, sometimes rock, sometimes pop, and a million little genres in between, and yes, some of it is indie, but the general sound, or type, overall, is not indie.

Indie is just a word that carries different inflections based on who is saying it and because of that I disagree with anyone trying to use it as a label for the music they happen to listen to. Every band was Indie at some point.

Uhh yeah, its not a matter of 'back in my day'.
Unfortunately the genres within indie are many, thats a fact.
And we already know what a genre is.
But, you can call your own favorite music by that term if you want, even though its not the right term....and it means something else....and even though someone else's idea of it is something completely different....which is why is isnt a genre. ;)

The music I posted earlier is 'indie' yet I bet it has no resemblance to what you call indie. Yeah, thats because its not a genre.

Like Dr Phil would probably say..."You cant paint a black cat with a white stripe and turn it into a skunk"

lazybones
01-05-2011, 07:47 PM
Oh for the love of god. I was simply saying it carries more meanings than just what Kurt was saying it is. I'm aware it describes independent artists, whether it's rock, hip hop, etc., but I'm saying it's heavier meaning as of late is as an unofficial genre.

And yes, I will continue to call some of the music I listen to indie, because that's an unofficial genre. Like I said, it has many meanings. It's widely referred to as a genre now, I'm not the only one. I'm not saying it doesn't refer to independent labels.I'm just saying it's got a wider range of meaning then it did in "your day." Let's keep Dr. Phil out of this. ;)

I know.
A lot like pig latin. People take real words, alter them, attach a meaning, and other cult members of the pig latin community think they know what you mean...most of the time.

I am not disputing that some people such as yourself and many others use the word
indie as a reference to a genre. I am merely pointing out that in fact it is not.
It cant be, as in fact it refers to multiple genres. Thats a fact, not my imagination.
Which evidently you sorta kinda agree by your own words with yet sorta dont.

And Dr Phil didnt say that, I did.
Just because you paint a black cat with a white stripe doesnt make it a skunk.
Just because you may call all independent music a single genre doesnt make it so. ;)
