Well, all I can say is that I appreciate your mind blowing wisdom in enlightening me of something I already know, and restating things I've already said ;)
Oh good, then we agree.
It didnt appear so when you said "it DID refer to production, NOW it refers to style and sound"
because that would mean a single genre, which evidently we both agree it isnt. ;)

This subject always seems to touch some nerve with 'indie' fans. It really shouldnt.
I am sorry if I offended you Lazybones but I was raised by teachers, a whole freakin' family of them. Language arts were the primary major. I was that kid in your elementary, junior high, and high school who scored 99.99 percentile on the grammar and English usage part of those achievement tests while the rest of the school tested far below that. Yeah, thats me. I was the geek in the top one percent in that subject.
So, for me origins of words and true meanings are important, and always trump attached, false, and slang meanings. Don't worry, I too butcher the English language, use slang, attach meanings, inferences and so on. Why? Because its fun. And frankly sometimes I am lazy.
But at the end of the day the real true meaning is still valid and crucial to communicating thoughts and ideas effectively.

Nice. To me much metal these days is a total and absolute fail in the vocal department.
The so called "screaming and death growls" are akin to no talent talking
with music IMO....aka Ke$ha type garbage. It allows people with no real vocal talent
to become 'singers' and frontmen....but totally sucks in terms of real music....which by definition should contain melody, harmony, tune etc. The screamers are nothing more then Rob Halford wannbes...only without the voice. Thats my opinion. ;)

Well you know opinions are like *******s just as well as I do. I think screams and growls add an emotional intensity singing can't. Those "talentless hacks" pour their heart into those lyrics. I think it's a legitimate aspect of musical styling. You disagree, and that's that.
I am impressed with vocalist who can incorporate both styles. It makes the music much broader. For example check the beginning, middle, and end of this song. All one band, all one vocalist.

The only part that impresses me is when people can actually sing....which a few screamers can. The screaming adds nothing musical...for me, pretty much like Ke$ha adds nothing
to whatever sound is behind her. ;)
I think that its rather unfortunate that metal has gone that direction. Its not progress.
I think it has to do with something a musician friend of mine said, there is nothing really
'new' in music. Its all a rehash or a variation of whats already been done, much of it grasping at straws trying to be new and different.

With regard to opinions...its true that all music, art, and so on is 'opinion based' to a great extent. Beauty is in the eye and ear of the beholder.
However, in all cases there are still certain rules of nature (or creation) that apply. Within art that may be color, contrast, subject, composition etc. Within music obviously melody, harmony, tune etc would be the basis of music. We all, myself included, like some 'noise' added to music. I like it in the form of some over driven guitar, distortion, etc. Where we draw the line in those additions is where opinions definitely come into play, as well as what tune, melody, harmony, colors, composition etc we find pleasing to our senses.
To me screaming adds nothing but too much noise. I am seeking something much more musical (in terms of those basic rules of nature)then simply growling, screaming, yelling provides. Also I am not convinced that it takes much talent to do so. It seems in a similar vein as an 'artist' that does nothing more then throw paint in front of a fan. Neither of those things is something I can regard with very much respect. The guy who only throws paint in front of a fan is nothing say compared to a Rembrandt. The guy who only screams and growls is nothing compared to a Mozart. Ke$ha is crap compared to a real singer.
But, I fully realize that some people like talentless, and common low level talent art forms, even spend millions on it, so it is big biz.

That wasn't meant as a stab at ya. I was referring to how certain dictionaries are considering putting irregardless in the them as synonym for regardless because it's such a common mistake. It similar to the new meaning the word indie has taken. While Kurt is right that it's being used incorrectly, it's so prevalent that it's becoming correct. That's how languages change and evolve. If the mass majority of people agree that a word means something, eventually it takes on that meaning. I'm on Bridgitte's side with this one.
Look at the word "cool". It's one of the oldest slang words I can think of. I use it more often to describe something nice than to describe something with a low temperature. That meaning will always be considered slang, but it's still a legitimate meaning. It's in any dictionary.

I think it has to do with something a musician friend of mine said, there is nothing really
'new' in music. Its all a rehash or a variation of whats already been done, much of it grasping at straws trying to be new and different.
There's a lot there I agree with. I think sometimes artists ARE trying new things just to be different, and try to be fresh. I suppose the difference is, I'm okay with it when they fail. Not everything has to be new and different, but I like it when they try. It's fine to stick with a known good formula, but there's also nothing wrong with pushing the boundaries and accepting that it might not be that great. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Some people use music as a comfort of something known, and others use it as a chance to explore boundaries and create something their own. Neither way is wrong.
Going back to the vocals, I imagine we'll just have to disagree on where the talent is. I think the harsh vocals require a radically different set of skills, and heart. It's physically demanding, and you have to truly believe in what you've written to give that much of yourself into those songs night after night on the road. It provides music with a very raw, primal energy that I haven't seen captured very well in other ways. You'll think I'm crazy, but I can tell the difference between a talented vocalist that can control the pitches of the growls and screams and one that can't.
I think talent doesn't necessarily come included with the ability to sing. I've heard plenty of vocalist with great voices that just didn't have any passion. They just show up for that pay check. If anything there are more heartless, passionless singers than there are screamers. I've heard spoken word poetry over music that was very powerful.
It just a very different form of vocal delivery. It's polarizing. You either buy into it, and accept it as a form of expression, or you think it's horrible sounding horse-****. I do think it requires it's own unique skill set. (I know talentless, tone-deaf, lazy, and looking to make a quick buck. I said it for ya.) In the end it's all personal taste.

The flaw in your theory in this context is that unlike some words that have vague, multiple, or non specific meanings, some words have much more clear meanings as origins and roots and are not subject to nearly as much change. Well that coupled with the fact this 'new' use of the word 'indie' must first erase the word and meaning of 'genre' which is also a specific accepted term in English. It must also eradicate the word independent to some degree.
I'll give you an extreme example of such a word case study. Its a word that starts with a C, ends with a T, and rhymes with hunt. ;) That word's origin is directly from ancient language, pertaining to a very specific geometric shape. That geometric shape is the basis of the word. That specifc shape can also be related the construction of female genitalia. Henceforth the implications and general meanings of that word have been the same for thousands of years. You and 10,000 friends can call the flagpole in front of the post office a c**t but that doesnt make it so. Nothing about that usage is correct. But, at any given time a group or groups could practice calling it such, even though it has not a shred of origin relation or a bit truth to it. ;) Such use is outside a basic rule of language.
Some words, cool, gay etc are less specific in origin and meaning and can be used many ways. Current tradition takes more precedence in that case.
Your view the word 'indie' is understandable. Perhaps its a reflection perhaps of your musical tastes or whatever. But, its not based upon the rule of language. Its akin to saying that we are going to now assert that the words "multiple", "many", "numerous" will from now on mean singular....simply because we choose to use them that way. The 'indie' folks will likely need to narrow down the definition of that word. It literally contradicts what people want it to imply. Its meaning has nothing to do with what they wish to convey. Or perhaps a new word to describe the genre they are referring to will emerge. Time will tell.
Youre right though, language does change. But that change is not without limits.

I see what you mean about some words having very concrete and defined origins. That an aspect I hadn't considered. I still consider that only one way a word, and it's meaning can come into existence. I actually don't like how indie describes a certain genre instead of any independent artist, but when someone uses it I understand exactly what type of music they're referring to, then it worked.. Maybe it's a slang use of the word, but doesn't that still count as a definition of the word? Why must it negate "genre" or "independant". If anything, in that context indie becomes a type of genre. It's just a new meaning. Humourosly, what we're left with is an "indie" group on some major label, and a little pop group putting stuff out independently, waiting to get signed. I know that misuse drives you crazy, but how is that not language evolution?
If a thousand years from now we still have flags and flagpoles and every calls a flagpole a c*nt because we started using it as a joke and it caught on, then that's what the meaning is. Maybe no one calls it a flagpole anymore. No one can trace back the origin of c*nt, the word flagpole has been forgotten or regarded as an extremely old word for c*nt. There might not be much logic to it, but if a word is understood by almost the entire population to have a certain meaning then it has that meaning. It can violate many laws and rules, but as I understand it, spoken language is nothing more than a string of grunts, yelps, and tones used to convey meaning. I'm curious so feel free to explain more. I'm sure there's something I missed, but isn't that it's basic function?

Perhaps a specific made up spelling, even INDIE, will in fact become the title of a genre.
It may eventually become an independent word (haha pun) of its true origins as it were, and no longer associated with multiple genres.
At this point however there are too many genres under that 'label'. It doesnt even make any sense. I like indie music, but nothing related to what you and Lazybones think of when that term is used. Even the indie music my son listens to varies widely in genre. Words are supposed to convey meaning accurately, and consistently. This word doesnt. Its slang, subject to whatever meaning one attaches to it.
Thats why I say the current term is a misuse. It doesnt accurately convey one meaning in terms of sound. It also fails to convey which sound is being referred to. Over time we will see where that goes. Youth are quick to adapt words for their own use. Pop culture etc. The English language doesnt necessarily follow quickly or even at all sometimes.
 I would definitely not look for such to occur. Our basic rules of language are too long standing and grounded in something that has specific origins and meaning. (latin etc) They do not get 'erased' so easily. We tend to add new words rather then disregard the origin and true meaning of such words. A flag pole doesnt resemble the correct geometry for that to be feasible. We at times use words incorrectly for a generation but often the true meaning remains.

Damnit Kurt! I was finally agreeing with you!
I think language is constantly evolving. For instance, the words dude, artificial, awful, prove, counterfeit, brave, manufacture, and tell all have changed meanings over the past few hundred years.
Then there are words that have adapted new usages over time. For instance, if you were to "chair the meeting." Or when you tell someone to "chill". Even words that get erased (or just used so little that they no longer effectively exist) like thou, thrice, defedate, somandric, privign or penintime.
I also don't like people who attempt to place theirselves as guardians of language (I know it sounds hypocritical but my argument against the use of "indie" is purely musical and not linguistic). Frankly if language didn't constantly evolve we'd all be speaking some ancient language and Shakespeare would make no sense.
Remember, "10 items or less" is incorrect! You use "less" when the amount can't be precisely counted. It should be "10 items or fewer."

There is no question that words and language evolve.
Its not usually a process of a few years however, especially with many of the words you have cited as examples. Even some of those remain. Theyre just dormant for the time being at least. Others still pertain to some degree to their roots, even though some specific use has changed.
My basic argument against the term 'indie' is pretty much the same as yours...it doesnt correctly or accurately reflect a specific music sound or style. I am adding that this is due in part at least to the fact its so far been a misused word.
Also, I dont consider myself a guardian of language. Not even slightly. I just cannot ignore all the rules of language, the meanings, the origins....if I did I would be speaking some sort of pig latinish greekbrew. We cannot consider ourselves educated and ignore reality.
Bottom line - 'indie' currently refers to about a hundred different kinds of music. Its a fairly useless word to decribe much of anything MUSICALLY except the original meaning which was independent.

Okay, I missed your other beef of "indie" being too broad term to describe a genre. That's something I can't really attest to one way or another. I get what sound bonez meant when she said it, but the word is new, or it's misuse is recent enough, that others might not think of the same sound.
I also find it unlikely that people will call flagpoles c*nts anytime soon. I was using it as a funny example to pose my question.
If 200 years from now everyone is still calling their PDAs a phone, doesn't that make it a phone? Technically a phone is device for calling someone. Soon we'll have small portable devices we use for everything from communication, to providing media, working as a GPS/locator, monitoring our vital functions, and almost anything else we can do digitally all in one device.
The devices we call phones now are already way more than just phones. We still continue to call them phones. I think it's inaccurate, but I do it too. If we take someone from 100 years in the past and someone from 100 years in the future and ask them to describe what a phone can do, they could potentially have very different answers. Chances are though, most other people in their respective times would know what they meant when they said phone. The people from the future might be using an antiquated word to describe their devices, but if they all know what each other is talking about then that old word has a new meaning. Right? Wrong?
Maybe this isn't a perfect example, but you get the idea. So are the future people wrong? They all know what the other is referring to. How long must a word be used in a new way before that meaning is considered valid? I don't think there's a hard and fast rule.

BTW, I dont regard any of this debate as frustrating nor does it anger me. I think that such discussions serve a very good purpose...to cause us to examine our thoughts and exercise our brain, for something other then an episode of Survivor or Jersey Shore. And perhaps even further our own knowledge or understanding.
Also, its no secret that the average American functions on about the 3rd grade level. Their language usage reflects this. But, I aspire to something a bit better, at least 5th or 6th grade.
Seriously though, its the mark of education and intelligence to BE ABLE to use language properly and understand it, accurately conveying thoughts and ideas.
Its also the mark of ignorance and lack of education to disregard proper language, misuse & misunderstand it, and ignore or not even know of its meanings, speaking in made up slang, gibberish, and nonsense. Just watch one episode of Cops for some of that.

Oh sure, don't think I'm mad or anything. I didn't think you were. I'm just curious as to your thoughts on that example I made. I try to follow proper grammar and spelling as best I can, but I'm certainly not perfect. I just accept that, for better or worse, language is very fluid and evolving. You seem less inclined to support that, so I was curious to hear your thoughts.

A hypothetical question is hard to answer. It only has hypothetical answers. :D
If we look to history though in general words get retired or discontinued. Even many of those remain in the dictionary. Some get altered in meaning to some degree, often still related to the root in some way. This is particularly true with words of a strong origin, less true with generic (for lack of better term) words that can be used many ways or words that have multiple meanings. Those are more fluid. I doubt 'telephone' will be a word that will be of forgotten origin or meaning....although what a phone does changes. Generally the dictionary reflects all of that.
Uneducated slang and street language is not subject to the same rules. It just goes in any gibberish direction its users take it. Most slang of that nature fades away however, with a small degree of it becoming accepted in dictionary terms. Its 'fluid' and constantly changing with each whim as you describe. Perhaps one example of this might be 'ebonics slang gibberish' (my terminology) spoken in some ghettos or among certain groups of people.

People's reactions to opera the first time they see it is very dramatic; they either love it or they hate it. If they love it, they will always love it. If they don't, they may learn to appreciate it, but it will never become part of their soul.

Bulb is the original project of Misha Mansoor, the lead guitarist of Periphery. It's early, and he did this all himself so the sound quality isn't incredible, but it's still an interesting song.

Way back in time, during the ages of dinosaurs, (during the Quaalude dynasty) I was roadie, lighting 'engineer', drum tech, truck driver, and all around stage flunkie for a talented prog rock/metal band. These guys were and still are my personal friends. The much laughed at and commented upon picture of me with big hair, with the subsequent 'mildly' *cough* suggestive comments of a certain unnamed person regarding my then lovely young wife, was actually taken at a birthday party for the guitarist.
This was a 3 piece band (think Rush) and this song was written in about 1979. To some it may seem 'old' or 'dated' but back in 1980, 81, when my friends performed it was very much cutting edge kick *** material, especially for a relatively unknown act. My giant fro was totally kick *** back then too! ;)

I dig it! Thanks, Kurt. At least this song, is kinda Blue Oyster Cult meets Sabbath. With a cool little interludes here and there. That's just the kind of range I like to hear. You can see how it's inspired a lot of the music I listen to. (That you hate.)
So if it's a three piece, how'd they incorporate the keys? I still hear drums and two guitars.

Pretty much like Rush...the bassist also plays keys and taurus pedals.
This is a studio recording (and its 'indie' too hehe) so it may contain 'extras' in terms of layers/tracks.
Live was a wall of sound...much like Rush.

IMO these 3 guys are a very much under played and under appreciated band.
Perhaps its their ties to 'christian' themes or having a gay black singer I dont know.
I just know they rock and thats all that matters to me.
They bring a diversity of musical styles and creativity to their music.
In live shows I have seen they definitely bring the goods.

My music memory/knowledge was quite humorous last night. My sexuality came into question as two of the "Music Bonus" questions were played. I knew within 3 seconds (seriously) what they were, which was good. The bad- the 1st was "Heaven is a Place on Earth"- Belinda Carlisle. 2nd- "I Think We're Alone Now" -Tiffany. I was quite intoxicated by that point, and used Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion as my excuse for Belinda Carlise, but Tiffany...there was no excuse  Later on we were the only people to get Henry James as an author question, and the only people to not know Chicago was the Music Bonus

I should have recommended these guys a while back, but it kept slipping my mind. Its thrashy, 80s-ish dual harmony, metal with a great amount of energy.
So of course they broke up and some of the members formed a punk band.:( It's good punk, but it doesn't have this emotion. They still made 2 or 3 good albums.

I don't only listen to metal, but what I love about it is the genre crossing, and experimentation. I guarantee you there is at least one band that falls into the metal genre that you would enjoy. It gets written off as too loud, thoughtless, and simple. That's just not a fair statement though. A good example is how Kurt hates a lot of the metal I like, but we can both say we like metal. The bands can be just as different as a lot of other genres.
Hell, listening to Mars Volta, I KNOW, there are some metal bands you'd enjoy. Just sayin'.
Dr.Drew

There is some progressive stuff that I respect. Whether it be musicianship or just new ways of looking at song structure. But I wouldn't say I "like" it because it's not audibly appealing to me. When I listen to metal I don't feel any connection with it, in fact I find it very unpleasant. Like it's grating at my ears. But that doesn't mean there arent some brilliant musicians who play it.
There's plenty of jazz guys I know who started with metal, it's where they cut their chops.

I like all versions of music. I'm not opposed to metal, ie: Lamb of God, Mastadon, Garth Brooks, Three Inches of Blood, Devildriver, Black Label Society, GWAR, etc. But there has to be talent behind it, I hardly listen to the growls or "singing" when it comes to metal, I mostly listen for the music. If it sounds good, I'm all for it.

Animals As Leaders (http://www.mx5atlanta.com/artist/Animals_as_Leaders?feature=watch_video_title) - "CAFO" Prosthetic Records

You guys like Sigur Ros? The Radiohead fans might like them. It was actually Thom Yorke's favorite band for a while.
This has been my favorite song for a long time now. YouTube - ‪Sigur Ros - Popplagid (Popplagiư - The Pop Song - Untitled 8 - ( ) 2002)‬‏
The drummer is pretty amazing in this track. Skip to the end for the impatient people. It's a pretty long song.
The Explosions in the Sky fans might like

and YouTube - ‪Antarctica - Full Crescent Crusade‬‏
The next one is probably one of the most refreshing things I've heard in a while. It's funky and fresh.
YouTube - ‪Beats Antique - I got...‬‏
I looked up some of their other songs, but nothing seemed nearly as good as this.
The Eminem fan might like YouTube - ‪Jedi Mind Tricks - Liberal Arts Feat Canibus‬‏ I wish the sound quality was better though.
Canibus and Vinnie Paz/Jedi Mind Tricks make up 90% of the hip hop I listen to. Eminem's probably the other 10%
YouTube - ‪Canibus - Bis vs. Rip‬‏ is an awesome track. He battles his alter ego/himself.
It's kind of intense though. No hooks or choruses. YouTube - ‪Canibus - Curriculum 101‬‏ is another favorite.
His voice can be harsh/annoying to some, but lyrically, I think he's the best ever. On the low, Eminem and Canibus have been battling through albums for years now. Canibus is the Meanie, one of Eminem's tracks. Do any of you like Sage Francis? YouTube - ‪Sage Francis - Sun vs Moon‬‏ I think this song is about their battle where the Sun is Eminem, and the moon is Canibus.
The Oakenfold fans may like Ulrich Schnauss. I don't know the names to his songs, but listening to a couple albums, there were a lot I liked.
What kind of speakers/headphones/iems do you guys use?

If anyone is looking for good portable sound, this is probably one of the most comprehensive comparisons I've seen anywhere on the web. But at the same time, sound is very subjective, so the thread is really his opinion only. But his descriptions are still useful as a baseline in finding the sound you like. Probably because it sounds exactly like the no frills rock n roll from the 60s and 70s. Seriously, I mean, some of the riffs are identical. They even have the same look. The singer sounds like a young Steven Tyler, too. But I dig the bassist. Clean playing, good tone, tasteful fills. That guitarist though...he had a huge solo and he wasted it with a couple of sloppy gimmicks all thrown together.

Great show by George and the Mob last night.
I have to give the 'new' singer Chaz West some credit too. After Oni Logan quit the band 2 hours before their tour was to start some 3-4 days ago, Lynch asked West to sing. He is literally learning the songs on stage, not an easy task at all.
Anyway, George knows how to pick a fight with his guitar...and win.*

Although that song is fairly well done Blackberry Smoke is a bit 'twangy' for me. They remind me of Hank Jr, a little bit rock n roll shoved into country and blues. I like the rock, love the blues, but the nasal country sound kills it for me.
Although, when I hang out with my redneck friends from TN who like country music I can tolerate this kind of stuff over the generic Nashville garbage for sure. I have listened to many hours of Hank Jr while drinking beer in the woods. After they make me listen to twangy southern crap for an hour or two I make them listen to Black Sabbath, Dio, or Judas Priest just to even things out.

Froosh fans can be pretty coveting of anything Frooshy. Just anything that has been Frusciantified is considered sacred. In the highest levels of Frooshdom this means that no songs/words/anything that Frusciante has used can be re-purposed. Usually they work to change the world through Frusciantification.
Often times this leads to Froosh....ok I'll stop now :p

Do not like rap @ all. The Jesus Lizard is a band no one has listed here (I actually read this whole thing :jawdrop:). They are my favorite band and have been for quite a while. No Means No is another fav and they have a new album out that is great but nothing matches their album 'Wrong'. I won't bore everyone with a list of music I like. Safe to say I was into and still love old punk and hardcore. I've been in four bands here in Atl beginning in 1989. Spiney Norman was first band and I think the website 'Beyond Failure' will allow you to download some of that and my second band 'Batch of Gimps'. Very little around from third and fourth bands because they were so short lived. Those downloads are very old and VERY garage because that's the best a broke *** band could do back in the day. I love music. Now that I've found this thread I can share some of my favs and see if anyone agrees! Those listing the more metal stuff...check out 'Unsane' and tell me what you think.

No joke. I thought that you, Kurt, would like to know that I actually started out as a big fan of the classic rock as it were. 'Yes' was my favorite band forever as a young man & the album 'Fragile' still has to rank in the top 10 albums ever made. That driving bass line in the song 'Roundabout' always makes for good listening. As gay as it may sound, some of the 'B' sides to many of the overplayed 'Queen' singles are some great listening. Freddie Mercury still has one of the most pure voices rock has ever known. I do think that you would like some of the newer stuff if you knew where to look back in the day (commenting on the lull you feel music had in the '80 & '90's). When my friends & I were first into the punk scene or hardcore for lack of a better genre to group it in, we had to pour over records at places like Wax n Facts & match up labels to find other great bands. It was pretty much our whole life at the time...sad, I know. Internet has changed all of that & has made access to lesser know (read: less overproduced = better usually) bands easier. There is so much out there now I cannot keep up. Some of it is stellar.

1. Set the first Frusciante song at up 1:38 right at the first note of the lead guitar.
2. Set up Maggot Brain to 0:45 at the first note of the lead guitar.
3. Set Maggot Brain's volume to half.
4. Play both at the same time.
Pretty cool. Actually playing them both sounds reallllly awesome. Apparently John is a big fan of them and the song is a tribute to them (stole this little tip from youtube lol).

Daily dose of Froosh. Song gets sick at 2:45, best bass line ever at 3:40.

Simple Man is a great tune live.
I am not a big southern rock fan but some live Skynyrd can be great when they
are paired with other classic rock bands....which cuts down on the inbreds in the crowd. :)
Here's another band and their unrelated tune called Simple Man.

I love Skynyrd so much. Grew up listening to Poison Whiskey and The Ballad of Curtis Low. Great stuff.

A couple renditions for the Satriani fans...of which I am one.
Think you can play guitar? Try two.

Rush is still good stuff...and Neil Peart rides his BMW motorcycle to every show! He is a motorcyclist through & through...I love that because I love motorcycles.
In keeping with the music thread as well...I'm going to see the Melvins & Unsane next week...OH YEAH!

I understand this will send most people screaming from the thread, but I like Rye Rye bunches. I got her Ryott powrr mixtape and it's become my commute jam. Her first album is finally dropping in May.
I also just have a soft spot for Baltimore Crazy Leg dances.

I'll admit, that one song is super catchy. Might be a bit overboard to say you like the band though - do they have anything other than that one song?!? Other than cover songs ;)
