View Full Version : Official MX5Atlanta Dyno Day March 7th at Lethal Injection Motorsports
Jack-MX5ATLanta.com
02-11-2009, 01:59 PM
Righto, thanks to the good guys of Lethal Injection motorsports, who I'm sure plenty of us on here already know, we've managed to set up a dyno day with them.
What does the dyno day consist of?
In much the same manner as our previous meets there will be a gathering of Miata, cool people and some food. But there's more!
Each car will be able to receive 3 runs on the in house dyno. A/F readings are no added cost if you already have a suitable bung, if you don't they will sell and install one for you at $50. They don't like using the one's found in exhausts because they go through too many O2 sensors (something along these lines, I'm not a pro in this area).
When
Saturday March 7th starting at 9am (might be subject to slight change).
Where
205 Tidwell Dr
Alpharetta, GA 30004
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=205A+Tidwell+Drive,+Alpharetta,+GA+30004&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF8&split=0&gl=us&ei=UCyTSeWbBY-Etgeym8zRCw&ll=34.111023,-84.239216&spn=0.025832,0.05579&z=15&iwloc=addr
Price
The cost is $45 for 3 runs. Ok we met the deposit so the event is definitely going through. You can pay $45 on the day but will have to go after everyone who has paid the $20 deposit. So if you want to guarantee a spot please send me $20 ahead of time.
It is free to show up and hang out with everyone. :)
Payments via paypal should be made to jack d maddox @comcast.net no spaces
If you wish to do cash please get in touch with me and we will try and sort something out.

It's all good. I can relate. ****ty day at work, then found out my engine won't be ready to go when it was supposed to be. Kills anything left of a decent mood. Even with 12 hour shifts, hope things improve.
So to be on topic here, you coming to the dyno day? :D

Do you have to have a tow strap/baby teeth/racing hook in front to be able to get on the dyno and be strapped down?
Not likely. They should be able to strap it b/w spokes in the front wheels or on the control arm (not ideal)

Do you have to have a tow strap/baby teeth/racing hook in front to be able to get on the dyno and be strapped down?
Nope, they'll probably use the wheels.
Stephan/stefan, I put spaces in my email address to prevent spam bots picking it up.
Flipking, the extra $50 isn't too bad considering it's probably less than what you'd normally pay to have someone make it up and install it for you. You can still get some good runs without it and learn how your car sits.
I'm not expecting big power or anything crazy, I just want to make sure my car is performing as strong as it should be. And get a good baseline before boost.

I'm sure they don't want to have to deal with old crusty O2 sensors and bungs... I don't blame 'em. But I'm surprised that won't use a tail pipe sniffer if there's no bung- at least it would provide some kind of reference.

No. It's $45, $20 now. The $50 is a completely separate charge and only if you want them to go ahead and weld/install a bung for the A/F readings in stock cars.

Find out if they've got a tail pipe sniffer (they must). I think that would increase interest - it's nice to see the AF compared to the power line. And yes, this is a good opp to get a baseline for those planning some mods. Also - you can do things like timing advances to get a bump in power - and know you're getting a bump. Or try out an intake/air filter, or air flow meter swap. Some of that stuff doesn't sound too significant but spec miatas have left the dyno with 7hp gain from timing changes and swapping out afms.

If N3v makes nine, we could all pitch in $5 for the tenth spot and do a lottery of some kind for each of those three pulls (dyno guys would be happy too with one less car to strap down). OR the runs could be sold at $15 each. Depends on interest/demand I suppose. I might be up for an additional run in that case if I'm cam gear tuning. Thoughts?

Is it too late to sign up? I think that if I actually paid the $20, I'd have to motivation to finish working on my Mirage. I know you guys probably don't want some FWD monstrosity around your Miatas...but I really need to crack the whip and get this thing rolling. This would force me to work on it! And if I don't get it done in time, I'll just bring the Mazdaspeed3 and see what it'll do stock.
One more question....is it a 2wd or awd dyno? I have some EVO/DSM/Suby friends that might want to get in on the action.

Especially because I'm using the AWD tranny (replacing viscous couple with a viscous coupling eliminator), and I still have the transfer case and driveshaft. I would need a rear subframe from a 1G DSM, a rear diff from a Galant VR4 or EVO I-II, to relocate the stock fuel tank, and to fabricate a new engine crossmember (stock one is where the transfer case would sit).
So basically, about a week's work with a competent welder. But I want to get the 4G63T swap done first, and see how completely undriveable it'll be as a FWD. Then I'll decide whether or not to do AWD.

Everyone who's deposited gets first run and I suppose it will be a matter of first come first serve for everyone else. For those that deposited I guess it will try and be done in the order they paid but if someone's there and no one else is then their not going to be made wait.

Damn...I might have to give up my spot. I'm having an issue with boost control - I can't get my wastegate to boost any less than 15psi - and I don't want to blow up my engine. I'm going to work on it tonight and hopefully get everything resolved.

Nick - isn't this the same issue you had with the other/old WG actuator? What did FM say the base is on the new one you're using?
How's the arm adjusted? You need to make sure that it's fully opening the flapper valve (extending the valve arm all the way). That old actuator you gave me wouldn't boost over 10psi on my car - and it didn't get there until 7000rpm because that 10psi opening spread.
Is it peaking at 15psi? rising to 15psi? rising after peaking at 15psi?

I don't know that I'm a competent tuner yet. If tuning was Mike Tyson's Punch Out, I'm probably at the Glass Joe level...nowhere near ready for Tyson.
I'm mostly relying on auto tune to do the work for me, and I just got a modified map back from FM that has been massaged a bit. FM recommends ~12 psi, so I wanted to stay within that target.

Is it peaking at 15psi? rising to 15psi? rising after peaking at 15psi?
Rob - you are right; it's the same issue. The new wastegate seemed to fix the issue (I was boosting right around 12-13 psi), but I swapped my cat for a test pipe and now I'm hitting 15 psi. That makes me think two things: 1) that it wasn't boost control keeping it at 12psi; instead that was just the new WG base boost, and 2) that whatever issue I had before wasn't with the WG; maybe the boost solenoid is leaking?
The arm on the actuator has about "one hole" worth of pre-load. I tried bending the bracket a little to take some of the pre-load out, but without too much effect.
As for the 15psi, it seems to slowly climb up to 15. I've been letting off the gas at that point since it exceeds my boost target.
When I get home I'm going to try running the hose directly from the turbo to the wastegate actuator to see if that changes the base boost. I might also throw the cat back on to cork it up a little bit and lower the boost.
Thanks for the help guys.

I didn't realize you were running EBC. You have to tune it from the default settings- has that been done? Are you running closed or open loop?
I don't know how much EBC tuning you've done, but here's some more info:
If you're holding at 12psi for a bit and the rising, raise zone 600 (WGsp O) a few points at a time, checking for changes. If you're your passing 12psi immediately, then lower zone 12 (WGsns).
It took me a while to tune mine, but it was a custom application. And I have yet to tune it for your old actuator after numerous datalogs. But in your case, it should be the best case scenario since you're running an FM kit. We could also mess with this tomorrow and you could dyno later if you want. And another (temporary) option is open loop - but that's going to produce different results with different conditions.

Sounds like there is a boost creep issue. If nothing changed in your setup on the vacuum side (turbo, vacuum lines, wastegate, boost controller, etc), but you suddenly are boosting too much after an exhaust upgrade, it seems to me that not enough flow is going through the open wastegate....aka boost creep. Might need to revert to the previous setup until you can either:
1) port the area around the wastegate flapper enough so that air will flow better through it
2) start saving for an external wastegate setup.
Personally, I'd put the cat back on and see if it goes back to controllable boost levels.

Thanks for the help guys.OK, now that starts to make sense. You are making more boost with your previous EBC settings because you have drastacally reduced pressure in your exhaust. The reason why the turbo works is due to pressure differential between the front and back of the turbine. The greater this delta, the more able the compressor will be at packing air into the motor.
What you're going to need to do is dial back EBC duty cycle. Link closed loop EBC is a pita. I'd just go straight to the open loop and you'll need to fudge in the duty cycle numbers until you hold what you want.
Or just get a MBC.
sorry i couldn't make it.. i had a variety of issues today :E

Damn that is a low reading. We'll have to have a make yourself feel good day with a dynojet next time

I heard they used a Mustang Dyno. Crappy choice.

Not really. Mustang dynos (when loaded properly, which I think this one may not have been) will give you the numbers that you're putting down on the street, as the pavement is resisting the power that your car is making. Dynojets are almost resistance free and are better for higher numbers to brag with. I like having both.

Yup, that's how I feel. Although 80 does seem pretty damn low for a car with 135 crank. But hey it's just a number, and my car still feels pretty damn fun on the roads.
It just makes me think of how fast casey's old 240 was when he broke 220 on that dyno.

just curious...what did the red NC pull at the end of the night? I was outside, the car was on there for an hour it seemed

there were a couple of those..... lol (and it didnt have anything to do with the shop)

Honestly the dyno operator seemed to know his stuff. I don't think he had it set wrong at all. Mustangs read low, that's all. Also, my car looks like it was making boost exactly the same on the dyno as it does on the street. My silver car never made as much boost on any dyno it was on as it did on the street. Never put it on a mustang though (I would have if I knew where one was).
Make comparisons between the different cars and all the numbers work out (ex: my car made 2.4X Jack's car which is exactly where it should be)

The guys were super nice and were laid back, but id have to say the dyno was a little low, like it had too much resistance on the rollers, for example, im sure everyone remembers my like 2 minute pull in 4th gear. my 4th gear tops at 140mph at 6400rpm, ive personally taken it there, with wind resistance. On my 4th gear pull it wouldnt go past 5000rpm with no wind resistance. so....idk, but anyway i put down 118whp@5600rpm and 129wtq@4400rpm.

that particular type of dyno isnt free rolling, it adds resistance based on your vehicles factory specs to simulate real life situations.

It reads low, simple as that. Just think on the bright side when you put your car on a dyno jet, it will increase the size of your penis by 2-3 inches. lol jk

lol, ya its supposed to, but it put more resistance than it actually has in real life even with wind resistance. oh well, the numbers werent too bad though, and the guys were real chill, ya i vote for a dynojet day, lol

I don't think it had enough power to go beyond it any time soon.

Yeah, mine too. When they did mine in 5th, it couldn't otp out on the dyno, but I later tested this theory out (Eric as my witness) that I had no problem reaching 5th gear redline with actual real life wind resistance.
Oh, BTW, for everyone who saw my lovely 11:1 AFR and jerky dyno pull. I loaded up an old map and the car is running FAR better. My dumbass should have brought the laptop. I will from now on though!

For not trying that to start with. But come to think of it, when did you change your map anyway?!
Doppelgänger
03-09-2009, 09:24 AM
I didn't change it. I'm thinking the maybe the WBo2 was slowly deteriorating and the autotune slowly changed the map?
Will the Hydra be able to safely fuel the car off the NBo2 under WOT? It felt fine...
But I still need to figure out what is wrong with the WB.

What type of wb was it? Fouled sensor from the heat?
Doppelgänger
03-09-2009, 09:46 AM
It's a NTK L2H2. Don't think it's just fouled. I need to really check it out because after my car sat running on the dyno, I went to plug it back in and it was cold, which tells me the heater element in it isn't working. It could be unplugged? Won't know until later.
Oh Eric, the IAT is still reading fine :)

That's good to know. And your theory of autotune screwing up the map is probably right on the money. However, I still wouldn't trust the NBo2 for anything other than idling, but I think that's all the Hydra uses it for, is out-of-boost operations. I'm still betting on the wires getting kinked where it comes in through the shifter turret and messing something up.

the autotune would make a good bit of sense.
I say follow the wires back and see if they got damage or if they are unhooked. If that leads to nothing then I would try and find someone(Stephen) with a working Hydra wideband to see if your is dead. If neither fixes your problem then you no it something with the Hydra.

Mike- if you have "closed loop" OFF then it shouldn't mess with your current map- except for usual running conditions like air temp etc. You don't need the wb for anything but tuning- they used to remove them after tuning to save on wear and tear.
I had a great time. Derek was very accommodating- his point was for everybody to have fun and relax. I'm sure he'd sped things up if somebody asked. The only real time eater was the lack of the ign pickup requiring a rolling rpm calibration. But that might have been an hour loss tops. Oh- and only two floor jacks in the shop.
I still have to figure out why my power curves are so different from the dyno jet which shows big power fall off up top. I did go through my logs and noticed that I was running an average of 13.8psi (13 target creep to 14.5) vs. the 16 I thought I was running. Not sure why since that's what the gauge showed on the morning drive over- otherwise I would've adjusted it. Did anybody else notice their boost levels on pull vs. what they normally see?

I realized on the way home that we should have dyno'd the MS3 in 5th gear instead of 4th, because it's a little closer to 1:1. Probably could have picked up a couple more hp :(

Like I told you yesterday, since you've been tuned on the dyno, you shoudl not be allowing the wb to do anything to change your fuel map. Plus you should never run closed loop in boost. EGO correction is only for cruising.

Sorry I missed coming out Saturday; sounds like you guys had a good time. I ran into some trouble with my new (to me) IC setup. Anybody near Marietta have welding skills for a quick repair?
just curious...what did the red NC pull at the end of the night? I was outside, the car was on there for an hour it seemed
I made 121hp/118tq. :) I don't mind the Mustang dyno, but I can't use those numbers to compare to everyone else who uses Dynojet of course.
Oh and far as my car being on there so long. The first two pulls were quick, but then the operator took a break. I actually should have just done the two and left because I was late for a dinner already.

Ben - I'm closer to Marietta than FL. ;)
Hari- using Mustang numbers is easy. Just get the other person to reveals their's first, then give them something higher.

That's why I challenge people to fuel pressure duels. They'll never win because the direct injection setup on the MZR engine uses like 1500psi! Or in the Mirage's heyday, I'd see who had the highest hp/liter. With a 1.6L making 215whp, I could usually crush all those fools with V8s. At least, on paper!

Alrighty, I'll re-load the map again and turn off the autotune function until I buy a new WBO2 (that's a whole new story..trying to find a good deal on a new WBO2 that I can use without having to pay FM $275 for a replacement)
