I know some of us posted pictures of our cars in the intro thread, but I think it would be a good idea to have a dedicated thread just for pictures. To keep load times down and to make things easy.. only post ONE (1) picture of your car per post.. and only post another one AFTER someone has posted after you! This way we won't get anyone posting 20 pictures in a row and we can drool over one picture at a time.

I'll start with a teaser picture from a photoshoot I had last weekend...

Doesn't look exactly like this anymore. Montego trunklid, black seats and no other interior, and will have a rollbar next time anyone sees it, but this is close enough for now. :P

I'm glad I spent the money on the MSM headlights. The originals on the car were fogged and getting some condensation inside. I'm REALLY glad I'm a Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development member, 'cause those headlights weren't cheap with my discount. List price is just.... insane. I'd love to put the MSM interior in the car, the black and red trim? I think that'd look just awesome.

Yeah it would. Does your car have the door panel inserts? (as in a raised/dimple textured area above the arm rest) If you do, you can get the red ones from the dealer for about $12 each... i ordered some from a Sinshen edition (blue) to go with my 10AE seats... installation was about an hour with basic tools... hell, i'd do it for ya if you ever decided to. This way you don't have to buy the whole door panel. Also, i don't think finding a set of red/black seats would be too hard.

JDM88

The red/black is actually stock??? There's a red Mazdaspeed Miata that parks in the same complex as me, I assumed they were just seat covers. That's quite cool actually. I wonder if there are any other similar mods for the NA's.

MeFryRice

Yes, the only color that didn't receive the red/black interior is the lava orange MSM. Lava Orange came with black leather.

Car does have the dimpled/raised inserts above the arm rest area. I called Gerald over at Jim Ellis and he was saying the inserts aren't available separately. I had a look on the Mazdaspeed Motorsports catalog, and although they're shown separately from the rest of the panel, I can't find a part number for 'em. Do you remember who you dealt with? Any Mazda parts guys wanna help a Saturn parts guy out?

Call Shawn in the parts department over at the same Jim Ellis and tell him you know me (the guy with the silver turbo miata with the 10th anniversary interior...he'll know). He knows what needs to be ordered. I'll try to get a part number for you. But yes, i know it's possible...because i ordered a set of blue ones myself.

I don't know what you're talking about.

nderwater

funny everyone should ask, i was just talking with metalman about it.

I bought my M3 this spring to replace the Miata - it was irritating that I couldn't take my toddler anywhere in it and I wanted a fixed-roof ride to start doing track days again. Selling the car turned out to be more difficult than I expected though. I can't tell you how many people have asked me how hard it would be to take the turbo off!

The few buyers who were genuinely interested were put off by the car's two nagging issues - the exhaust manifold has a crack in it and the gearbox scrapes a bit going into fifth. I don't think I can't get a reasonable amount for the car until I got these things resolved, but I haven't had the time or money to do so (Get this: I was quoted $700 from AVO for a replacement and $350 from MazCare to install it!).

Long story short, I'm not in any hurry, so selling the car is on the backburner for now because I'm sick of taking the time to show the car and give test drives to people who aren't going to buy.

RotorNutFD3S
09-05-2008, 01:54 PM
Refresh my memory, how much were you asking for it?

nderwater

Got any pics of the turbo/manifold assembly?

RotorNutFD3S
09-05-2008, 02:24 PM
Yup. Free food and drinks attracts help like flies.
Manifolds are not that difficult to uninstall/reinstall.
In any case, I'll relay that info to a friend of mine that's shopping for a pre-boosted Miata. Not sure what his budget is at the moment, so no promises.

nderwater
09-05-2008, 02:43 PM
I'm not afraid to dig in and swap the manifold myself, I was just really surprised at what I was quoted for it to be done. I had been looking into getting the current manifold welded, but once I got the heat shield off, it was obviously toast:

metalman
09-05-2008, 02:48 PM
I have seen other AVOs cracked that same way. Bummer.

Jack-MX5ATLanta.com
09-05-2008, 02:54 PM
Damn and that's a cast iron manifold right? how often do you boosted fella's run into these problems?

nderwater
09-05-2008, 03:05 PM
Turbo manifolds have a finite life span. this one didn't have a ton of miles on it, but over the years had been through thousands of heat cycles. I'm not that bent up about having to replace it, I just wish that AVO wasn't asking so much for a new one. I've found other turbo manifolds for half the price, but they would require too much re-engineering of the turbo and exhaust plumbing to be worth the cost savings.

RotorNutFD3S
09-05-2008, 03:13 PM
Cast log manifolds don't typically run into problems like these. What I also notice about the AVO manifold is that it does not have the recommended stress relief cuts in it. Probably the cause of the crack.

Jack-MX5ATLanta.com
09-05-2008, 03:41 PM

Ebay? 100% chance of fail.
ETD = good stuff
new FM = good stuff

Oh, look into JGS manifolds, I bet you could get one of those and pretty much copy the AVO so you don't have to a) buy from AVO ; b)fab a new dp. Check them out... http://jgsturbo.com/index2.html

Don't worry Nick and Ben, i've already been through what happens with the hood risers with him

Glad to see ya made it over!!

Nick, the manifold/kit on his kit is a 1.8 AVO kit...*if* you had a 1.8 manifold, it still wouldn't fit because the AVO has a rather unique turbo mounting position, which would require a new down pipe and intake routing :( It sucks that cast iron can't be patched....

Heh. I assure you that you don't want to get me started on engine bay extraction. I doubt anyone has experimented and cut into hoods as much as I have. Doppelgänger

Magnum Collision.

It looks different because the hood and the bumper don't meet at the same angle. They meet at a slight point, which reflects the light differently..which makes it look like two different colors. Look at where the sides of the bumper meet the fender.. they match because they meet at the same angle. I'll post a side shot and you can see what im talking about.

MeFryRice
09-09-2008, 08:17 AM

Doppelgänger

Precisely why i took it to them. Jenn had some work done on her Miata and MINI over there and honestly you cannot tell anything ever happened.

I'm actually working on trimming the stock bumper support to fit under the GV bumper in an attempt to push up on the bumper to try to make it match the angle of the hood.

P.S., I just pulled the stock leather steering wheel off of mine. It's pretty much mint. Dunno if you're going for something aftermarket soon, but if you want one to get by on, I'll let it go cheap. The one in the pic looks a little battered.
