Figured I should pitch in. So here's the "bike killer".

So she stayed all stock for the first month or so, aside from the wheels. Then I started tinkering...

Machined the front of the VC off. If anybody wants one of these done I'll do it dirt cheap. :)

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b304/NismoSER/Maggie/DSC_0520.jpg

A few of the folks on here know of my obsession with light weight. If you can toss it up in the air and it comes back down, it's too heavy. Thus:

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b304/NismoSER/Maggie/DSC_0524.jpg

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b304/NismoSER/Maggie/DSC_0541.jpg

Just got my Azenis mounted and picked up a Hard Dog HCDD for cheap. The wheels are going on tomorrow, and the rollbar goes in as soon as I make backing plates and cobble together the right bolts. The bumper cover is currently being modified to allow for a center exit exhaust to be fabbed up.

Then comes suspension, brakes, and then the power mods. Still debating between a 7lb. JRSC + some motor or a 10lb. with lower compression. The general consensus seems to be less motor, more boost, but there are pros and cons to each. I'd like to think I'd be happy with 200hp and a lot of weight reduction, but who knows. Might end up going even crazier in the long run. :)

my oh my, the miata dot netters would have a fit if they saw what you are doing to a 91 brg!

Are you going to put any of the interior back in or truely go bare bones?

Jack-MX5ATLanta.com
08-23-2008, 01:27 PM
I think that makes it all the sweeter!

You know my stance on the interior, but the fact it would infuriate so many shifts my position a bit. The end result is going to be spectacular though. I imagine it to be on a similar level to the exige.

Roadster
08-23-2008, 03:31 PM
BFH, I'm keeping the door panels, simply because I don't think I'd be able to make a replacement out of aluminum that's any lighter. A stock black dash will most likely make it's way back in, but it'll be pretty well cut up and trimmed to lose the now unused parts. Going to make a gauge face out of either clear plexiglass or aluminum for the center dash to house all of the auxiliary gauges to come (Water temp, air/fuel, boost, oil pressure).

The ragtop will probably stay for now. Never know when it's going to rain in the mountains.

Roadster
08-23-2008, 03:34 PM
It's got a Montego trunklid on it right now, courtesy of metalman. Wanted to lose the trunk rack and BRG body panels don't seem to exist, so this was about the next closest thing.

It's going to get all torn down over the winter to be repainted and get all of the hail damage and other dings repaired. The interior will be painted body color to make it look more uniform.

Updates over the last few days:

Made some backing plates out of .200 cold rolled steel plate and got together all the necessary bolts and installed the roll bar.

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b304/NismoSER/Maggie/IMG_4025.jpg

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b304/NismoSER/Maggie/IMG_4022.jpg

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b304/NismoSER/Maggie/IMG_4032.jpg

I made a plate to cover the shift hole out of scratch-resistent plexiglass. Drilled the 3" center hole with a hole saw, offsetting it towards the passenger side to allow for engine twist. Cut it out on the band saw and finished it on the belt sander and with a file. No more 900 degree heat blowing into the cockpit. :)

Why not just use an OEM boot instead of the plexiglass?? Just curious.

When youre ready for some body & paint work go see my friends at Sentry. Tell them I sent you, that way it will cost you double!! lol.....

Because I was bored, had some plexiglass, and felt like making some ****.

And it weighs a few ounces less than the rubber version...

Is Sentry the place in Lilburn you mentioned before? Another engine builder we deal with recommended them the other day also.

Yeah, the Cottrel's at Sentry in Lilburn. They race Miatas and paint alot of racecars for others, including OPM etc. Ken & Mike are good people. Mike has the pink 99 that is often in the front of the pack.

Tommy...Get some Duplicolor flat black fabric and vinyl paint and spray the cloth parts of your seats...will make them look like new for very little $$.
Dont spray the vinyl parts of the seats though.
So, you saved 4oz in weight by removing your finish panel? :D

Also....I concur...The BFH Miata has a nice pant job for the $$

Roadster

Actually, the finish panel was cracked so I took it off until I can come up with enough extra cash to get one of those reproduction ones from RSpeed. But that'll be a while, probably right before it gets torn down for the body work.

But yeah I'll definitely be getting in touch with those guys once the suspension and brake upgrades are out of the way. Priorities priorities. :)

Haven't updated in a while, so here goes:

Bought a used Jackson kit a while back, been in the slow and arduous process of trying to adapt it to my car. It's not designed to work without power steering, as it uses the pump bracket as a mount point for the tensioner included in the kit. Without it, there's just a big void area there with nothing substantial enough to use as a mount point.

No way in hell I'm going to re-install power steering just to make the installation of the supercharger easier. I'm too much of a damn masochist for that. Nope, going about it the hard way...

First order of business was to get one of the blank pulleys that came on cars with AC but no PS (thanks again for finding that, Eric). I thought that the only purpose of it was to act as an idler for the blower belt, not realizing that the different bracket also removes several mount points essential to the SC setup. Oops....

Started to piece things together before finding out how much more trouble it would end up being:

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b304/NismoSER/Maggie/P1011624.jpg

So I took everything back off and partly assembled my spare 1.6 engine at work to mock up the blower and make the necessary pieces to adapt it to a car with no options:

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b304/NismoSER/Maggie/P1011636.jpg

I spent most of this weekend at the shop trying to sort out various issues. Made a plate and bracket to bolt the lower support bar to the power steering blank pulley, and scrounged a random Ford idler pulley (pressed out and swapped the bearings between the idler and the ribbed pulley that came on the bracket so it would fit the shaft), and spent half a day running between parts stores trying to find the right length drive belt. This was the result thus far:

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b304/NismoSER/Maggie/P10116612.jpg

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b304/NismoSER/Maggie/P1011660.jpg

So I thought that pretty much everything was set, so I brought it home this evening and went to put it all back on the car.

Everything was looking perfect...except...

The blower drive belt just barrrreeellllyyyy touches the three bolts that attach the water pump pulley. Arg.

So back to the shop with it all in the morning, have to find a way to make a bracket and another idler to keep the belt off the water pump pulley. Hopefully it'll actually be running within another week.

DROVE UNDER BOOST FOR THE FIRST TIME TONIGHT!! :p

Yeah so, finally got it all up and running. Needs a bit of fiddling. No idea where the timing is set and didn't install the adj. fpr yet, and scouring the internet trying to find a used MSD ignition retard box (the one that was supposed to come with the kit) just to run it well enough until I can get a Link or MS. Anybody on here have one or know someone who does? I found one on MiataTurbo for $40 but it was sold already.

Anyway, pics of the re-engineered belt routing and mount brackets:

$40 to be able to drive the car reliably for a few months until I can afford to spend $500-$600 on a used Link setup is well worth it to me. I'd like to get suspension done before then anyway.

Well if you can find one at $40 then yea that is not a bad deal. Backing your timing down to 6 deg is what is done on a stock Greddy Turbo kit. It works, just everyone talks about the total lack of out of boost power due to it. But again at $40 dollar is a steal for a little peace of mind I guess.

Lots of new parts, pictures to come tomorrow.

Got the o2 clamp wired in and working fairly well a couple weeks ago. Still haven't done the afpr, for which I got an Autometer pressure gauge and firewall isolator. Just haven't gotten around to putting it in.

Picked up a pair of Corbeau Forzas, mount bracket for the driver's side (passenger to come later), a harness bar from Bethania, a 1.8 brake swap from Kurt (and Goodridge lines that have been hanging around but haven't been installed yet). Got some new smoked turn signals arriving Monday, and drove to SC with Jack today to pick up a set of Megan coilovers, which will be getting installed tomorrow. Just need a set of brake pads for the 1.8's and some aftermarket swaybars, and then I can shift the focus back to making more power.

The 1.8's that I got have stock pads, I was just going to go ahead and spring for some good ones before I do the swap.

P.S., has anybody else heard of Megan coilovers not lowering the damn car at all? The back is bottomed out and it can pretty much be called stock height. The front can go a bit lower, but I kept it level with the rear for now.

I've got all three locknuts bottomed out on each other in the rear, and the shock body is bottomed out inside the lower a-arm mount. When the car is off the ground, the spring droops about two inches. The lack of any amount of preload, I've heard, isn't such a good thing. But it would seem this is as low as it goes. I don't want it slammed, but some amount of non-stock stance would be nice...ideas?

I figure I'll continue this thread since I bought the car from Tommy back in December. :D

New mods/parts:
-BC Racing coil-overs
-Woodward collapsible steering column w/ quick release (adjustable, lighter, safer, cleaner)
-Personal leather steering wheel
-new custom fabbed kneebar
-aluminum radiator
-slim fans
-obx radiator hoses
-SS clutch line
-new clutch slave
-SS brake lines
-1.8 brake conversion
-Kirkey intermediate road racing seats
-Kirkey seat brackets
-GForce 6-point cam-lock harnesses w/ quick release tabs (so I can swap em into the race protege)
-intake turn signals
-GV front lip spoiler
-spec miata tow hooks
-hardtop
-viper car alarm w/ remote start (since I removed the ignition switch + wires)
-finished dewiring the rest of the a/c, heater, and airbag wires
-flipped and rotated the gauges, center mounted
-dremel'd the turn-signal/wiper stalks to fit the new steering column
-removed the stock seat bracket mounts

Things still left to do:
-hand polish the valve cover
-tint the windows
-remove the last remaining spot welded brackets
-rewrap the wiring harness
-gut the doors + remove the soft top frame
-paint the interior (BRG)
-paint the non-matching body panels (BRG rustoleum as a temp fix until 100% of the bodywork is done)
-add panasport rims
-find some smaller side mirrors
-build carbon fiber dash
-Add horsepowa. (1.8 turbo or 302 :D)

Ultimate goals:
-2000 lbs max weight
-300whp minimum
-a unique vintage-ish race inspired miata with tons of added lightness
(It helps that I'm OCD about making things extremely simple. I'm a huge fan of minimalism.)

*oh noes*

Had to measure, drill, and tap new holes for the Personal wheel (unexpected PITA!)

Damn, yep that's Tommy's ugly &%$# car :) If you ever decide to get rid of that 1.6 lump, let me know, I think that's the purdiest little 1.6 I know. Gettin a wild with the paint colors? any descision as to what the final colors are gonna be. I assume this is going to be a track car? Anymore of an interior going in?

I'd like to see what this means.

Look at the last picture posted, the gauge cluster is upside down.

lol, the paint colors were like that when I bought the car.
It doesn't look horrid until the hardtop is on. Only then is the rainbow complete.
It'll be my daily driver + autox toy this year, track car next year.
Final color will be "Kona Blue Metallic" from the 2010 Mustang... but it'll probably be 2 years before I get around to painting it.
The only bit of interior going back in will be a sheet of carbon fiber for the top part of the dash... Anything else would weigh too much.

I'd like to see what this means.
I had to crack open the stock gauge bezel, remove the needles, remove and trim the faces, and modified some mazdaspeed protege needles to fit.
I think it looks great.
(I have one more needle in the mail as the MSP's don't have an extra one for the oil psi guage)

Eventually, I'll get around to making new vinyl overlays for the fuel, water temp, and oil psi gauges... but it's not on my top priority list.

Yeah i do love that shade of blue when/ if you paint it, she will look good. If you got it up and running we need to make a trip to the mountains sometime in the near future.

Plans are to stick with BRG. I have to admit that I've grown to like the color.

Fabbed a new knee bar, the revised version sits a little bit lower (for the gauges to mount in the stock position)
http://i459.photobucket.com/albums/qq314/prodigyprotege/1991%20British%20Racing%20Green%20Roadster/IMG_0150.jpg

Modified a carbon fiber protege dash to fit in the miata... it was an uber PITA to make fit.

--I still need to get the suspension dialed in, it's nowhere near where I want it to be.
--need new wheels + tires

destitched the boot cover to fit around the roll bar

And last but not least, bought some '65 Shelby GT350 bullet mirrors and mounted them a foot forward of the oem mounting location
They look nice at every angle except directly from the side.
Should look nice after some paint..
