Simply picking up the phone and talking is way too simple and leaves no room for *****ing though.

Meh instant messaging is a side distraction for when you're bored online and don't feel like phoning someone up. It's also a lot quicker and easier than text messaging!

FlipKing
02-04-2009, 01:13 PM
^^^ Exactly!!! lol I talk cars til 4 in the morning most nights

Or even better... leaving the house and hanging out with people instead of staring at the computer for hours. Human interaction ftw.

I've had my AIM name since the mid-90's but I stopped staring at a screen and decided to go out and do other things quite a few years ago. Just got tired of it... but it is a good way to pass time in the odd hours of the night.

I'm still on it sometimes for work though. Easy way to talk to coworkers around the country or around the world for free and while multi-tasking.

I don't think I've used AIM in at least 3 or 4 years.

Doppelgänger
02-04-2009, 02:06 PM
the only reason I have used AIM in the past was at my old job so the salesman could send me stuff to check on... but I don't know why he insisted on doing it with AIM.. and not email or simply walking 10ft around the corner and asking me

I talked to you on AIM over the summer...

And how would you have done that? I highly doubt it.

We use to PM back and forth on IA....lol...don't remember?

Sawyer
02-04-2009, 02:39 PM
Yeah, when I first bought my MSM. But that's IA, not AIM.

simontibbett
02-04-2009, 02:41 PM
No but then you gave me your AIM. I thought you did at least lol, I may be wrong. Not trying to fight or anything.

MeFryRice
02-04-2009, 02:44 PM
I have to admit, I do text message quite a bit; average ~7k msgs/month. I do it mostly during work though, it makes the day go by faster.

simontibbett
02-04-2009, 02:45 PM
I will admit I text over 300...a day..

It's easy to answer quick questions with a text or to ask a simple question, especially if you are in class or work and can't call. And for me it's cheaper then calling.

MeFryRice
02-04-2009, 02:46 PM
And the fact that you don't have to spend a lot of time on the phone with people your not in the mood to talk to at that time.

simontibbett
02-04-2009, 02:47 PM
lol exactly.

Jack-MX5ATLanta.com
02-04-2009, 02:48 PM
Holy titty ******* Christ batman! That's a lot of messages.

Jenn I don't think we're sacrificing human interaction to chat online, but sometimes people find it odd if you want to hang out at 1:30am on a tuesday night  Well that may be extreme but sometimes you've got things to do and can't fit actually seeing someone in. It's a good alternative to chatting on the phone, and I find myself on Aim most of the day between classes or at night when I'm wasting time online.

I really don't see why people could knock an instant messaging service, I don't think anyone on here spends all day looking for people to talk to online

It's just a convenient service.

simontibbett
02-04-2009, 02:49 PM
Yeah I def. hang out with people in person and go out more then I just sit online. Hell half the time AIM sets up when who and where lol. I even text from AIM sometimes now haha.

Jack-MX5ATLanta.com
02-04-2009, 02:52 PM
And also, some of the stuff we've talked about on aim..... just isn't right for phone calls

simontibbett
02-04-2009, 02:55 PM
Yeah LMFAO it might be just scary on the phone.

ya'll know you can put your AIM name in your profile right? So we don't need a massive publicly viewable thread with a bunch of screen names...

FlipKing
02-04-2009, 03:58 PM
Yes, but a centralized location makes it easier than clicking profile to profile, lol

I get on AIM and instantly have at least 10 windows pop up asking for help on the gaming clan template websites I helped design or on other various programming issues, damn I used to be a computer nerd.
If I use my other screenname, it's a bunch of car related stuff. I can only deal with technical issues so much in one day, so I typically do not sign on ever. Unless there is someone in particular I'm trying to talk to.
I do text a LOT in one day. Thank God for free unlimited text messaging.

I mean I guess, I have no need to contact everyone at the same time... but hey, do your thing.

FlipKing
02-04-2009, 04:15 PM
Oh, i dont contact em all at one time, i've just added alot of people on AIM in case i need help or advice.

I still keep my AIM name from 14+ years ago - typically in the case where I'm looking for someone I knew then that I long ago lost their phone number or they moved away to another state... and whom I met online before the dot com boom on old Bulletin Board Systems. I used to have 8 phone lines installed in the corner of my bedroom in the early 90s when I used to run a dial-up chat system when I lived in Forest Park/Lake City.
