View Full Version : Flyin' Miata Hard Dog Roll Bar GROUP BUY
RotorNutFD3S
01-30-2009, 03:58 PM
It's time to get the ball rolling here.
I just got off the phone with Keith @ Flyin' Miata, and they are willing to do a group buy with us on Hard Dog Roll Bars. This is going to be off the chart, off the record, whatever you want to call it, but it is for MX5Atlanta Members ONLY!!!
So here's the deal. We're going to combine shipping into one drop shipment by truck to a commercial address from Bethania-Garage, so there will be a really nice savings on shipping costs for everyone by going this route. No paying $75 to ship your one bar.
Since we're going to most likely use MeFryRice's business as a delivery point, it will be the responsibility of each member to come get their bar in Peachtree City. Or I will be willing to come deliver it in my awesome Previa for gas money (and your willingness to wait until a weekend if you're in some land far away like Athens ). I can fit multiple bars in there at once, but I'll have to unpack them.
At the same time, FM is giving us $20 off each bar ordered. May not seem like a lot, but you have to remember, there is very little markup in the rollbars to start with. Every bit helps us.
Also, if you want some accessory like padding or covers, they will be regular price, but I'm pretty sure that they can be shipped at the same time. So consider that into your price.
Since everyone checks the forums pretty frequently, and I'll be sending an email as well, the cutoff date for saying you're IN is February 15th. On Monday, Feb. 16th, I will call FM and give them our final bar order and receive the shipping quote. From there, I will report back with the total shipping cost that will be split among everyone that's in the group buy.
Everyone will then have until February 27th, to get their payment submitted. *EDIT* I just got off the phone with FM, and they have asked that I basically organize everything on our end since this is our deal. As far as paying is concerned, you will need to submit payment to me so that I can pay them one sum at the end of next month. Of course, no one needs to worry about this until after February 16 when I get the final quote. You can either pay by cash in person, mail a check or money order, or PayPal if you're willing to cover the 3% transaction fee.
Requotes are something that I'd like to avoid as much as possible since it's extra work for me and for FM and everyone's shipping cost will go up, so please, take joining this group buy very seriously. (Additions to the group buy will be allowed, but if you're looking to come into the buy between the 16th and the 27th, you'll be expected to pay immediately.)
So please respond to this thread if you're in, and I will keep the list updated. If you have any questions, please feel free to post them up, but please keep the discussion in the thread to a minimum. Unnecessary posts will be deleted.
What a great way to spend the tax returns!!!
Let's roll!!!

A big thanks to RotorNutFD3S for putting this together.
Prices can be found on the Flyin' Miata website:
Sport bars (http://www.flyinmiata.com/index.php?dept=91)
Hard Core bars (http://www.flyinmiata.com/index.php?dept=92)
Other bars (http://www.flyinmiata.com/index.php?dept=93)
Take $20 off the bar price. Shipping cost will depend on just what is being ordered, so we can't give a firm estimate on that.

Give me a few days to work on it and I will give a definite answer.

02-05-2009, 08:34 PM
Roger that Jim. You want double diagonals as well or just the plain Sport?
And I just moved myself to the maybe list. The Deuce I'm ordering is for Brittney's car and now she can't make up her mind as to what rollbar she wants.
jcmkam1990

I can't make up my mind about the diagonals. I know they offer a lot more rigidity. (roll bar on viagra)

02-05-2009, 08:43 PM
Yep, at the cost of some rearward visibility. If you can work the outside mirrors, you'll be fine. Don't have to tell me now, just something to think about.

The diagonals are fine for visibility. Yeah I recall quite a few people saying how much they wanted this to happen!

So, it looks like the M2 hard core hard top isn't SCCA legal? Do you guys know if i'd have trouble tracking it?
RotorNutFD3S
02-05-2009, 09:51 PM
Where does it say that? On Bethania-Garage's website: "The M2 Hardtop version of the Hard Core Bar is designed for the serious SCCA Solo 1 competitor that wants to maintain a dual purpose car for street and racing use, but doesn't want to give up the hard top or glass rear window convertible top."
Jack-MX5ATLanta.com
02-05-2009, 09:53 PM
As far as I know any of the Hardcore bars are SCCA legal. It's the Sport bars which use the thinner piping which aren't legal.
I have a Hardcore Hardtop Double Diagonal and absolutely love it.

TDR (http://www.trackdogracing.com/website/rollbars.htm) has it simply unchecked. Specifically for SOLO 1. I'm just trying to future proof it so I don't spend the money and the install and not be able to take it somewhere. I haven't been on a track or anything before but want to leave my options open.
FM (http://flyinmiata.com/index.php?deptid=5652&parentid=0&stocknumber=20-28020%20%201%20DIAG) takes out this detail in the hard top version. I didn't want to assume anything.
Thanks guys.

Pics of sport bar?
Solo 1 is no longer a series, as it's track trials now. Do they follow the same DOM tubing only and thickness as the GCR for road racing?
matredd
02-05-2009, 10:01 PM
I'm not too worried. Go ahead and add me for the M2 Hard Dog Hard Core Hard Top double diagonal.
The vinyl padding as well.
A tech day would be pretty nice. I'm sure we could get some momentum on the installs with a group.

Just one more post, Jack.
RotorNutFD3S
02-05-2009, 10:11 PM
What do you mean?
That the ability to have a thick bar and the option to have a hardtop at the same time is a good thing.
Jack-MX5ATLanta.com
02-05-2009, 10:16 PM
That and seen as some racing requires a hard top I would find it surprising if the rollbar which allows for a hard top would be illegal.
simontibbett
02-05-2009, 10:29 PM
True, but if you are racing you need a cage and bolt in is illegal. Most buying these are doing track days right? MOST track day clubs even SCCA states if the car has a roll bar, it must follow the GCR (for SCCA) or whatever rule book the club has, usually the same as SCCA as far as saftey equipment.
To make it easier on you all:
Sizes tubing per weight of car:
Up to 1700 lbs: 1.375 x .080
1701 - 2699 lb: 1.500 x .095
2700 lbs and up: 1.750 x .095
Materials:
Seamless or DOM mild steel tubing (SAE 1020 or 1025 recommended) or alloy steel tubing (SAE 4130) must be used for all roll cage structures. Alloy and mild steel tubing may not be mixed. ERW tubing is not allowed.
In competiton:
An inspection hole between 3/16 and 1/4 inch diameter must be drilled in a non-critical area of the front and rear hoop as well as one of the supplemental braces to facilitate verification of wall thickness.
^That last part shouldn't really be done for most on here lol, just throwing out how it's checked.
Keith@FM
02-09-2009, 10:07 AM
The Hard Core Hard Top meets all the specs for SCCA, but the problem comes with the height. It sits 1.25" lower than a normal Hard Core so it's tricky to get the clearance on the broomstick test. This might be why TDR doesn't consider it legal, but it's going to depend on the geometry of the driver and the seat.
All the Hard Dog bars use DOM.
Jack-MX5ATLanta.com
02-09-2009, 10:34 AM
I gotta say, even with the soft top bars I've seen it looks hard pressed to fit a broomstick for clearance with a helmet on.
Keith@FM
02-09-2009, 11:09 AM
Blame Mazda for that :) It's a small car.
People who are above average height are probably going to need a different seat if they want to pass the broomstick test.
Doppelgänger
02-09-2009, 11:24 AM
I'm 5'11" and can pass the broomstick test with the BFDM bar..and with the HDHCDDM2....I just slouch down

From my reading it looks like a Deuce - center brace will work with my '91 that has a duetto motors glass soft top. If that can be confirmed I'm in.
Black Powder Coat.
RotorNutFD3S
02-09-2009, 09:02 PM
From Hard Dog's site:
Compatible with 1990 - 2005 Miatas with original equipment or after market plastic or glass rear windows*
*Center braced Deuce compatible only with OEM 1999 - 2005 size converitble top glass rear windows or aftermarket windows of the same size and shape as the 1999 - 2005 Mazda rear window.
So as long as your glass has the same dimensions as OEM glass from a '99-'05, you're good. If you can confirm that, I'll add you to the list!

I'm hoping that we can get at least 10 people signed up so that it's worthwhile for us and for FM. Plus I'm waiting for her dad to say he's going to pay for it. Others have dropped out because of various reasons. I'm hoping an extension to the end of the month will help everyone out. Just hang on to the money for it, we'll still make an order no matter what, it's just the more orders we have, the more we can hack off the shipping price.
jester911
02-16-2009, 04:30 PM

Casey needs to sign up for this.
So basically if I want to get in on this group buy, I have to pick out the roll bar I want and submit the payment to you by the 27th? Then how long after that will it be before they are shipped to you? I should basically pick out a bar I want and deduct $20 from that price and give you that amount?
RotorNutFD3S
02-22-2009, 09:33 PM
You just need to tell me if you are in or not by last day of the month, actually, since that's a Saturday, we'll say that the end of the day Sunday, March 1 is the deadline so that I can contact Flyin' Miata for the totals first thing Monday. Please be sure that if you say you are in that you can commit the money for it.
Your cost is whatever roll bar you choose, minus $20, + any accessories if you choose. Then after we find out how much shipping is, that cost will be split between everyone. After the totals are figured out, you will be given your total, and that's the total you'll have to submit to me so that I can pay FM.
Payment can be made by cash in person, by check or post office money order, or PayPal if you will cover the 3% transaction fee.
