Aftermarket seats?

The stock Miata seats kill me on long drives. My shoulder blades are just above where the side bolsters disappear and they end up hurting quite a bit...esp. in the mountains where one gets tossed about so much...

$700 for a pair of fixed back, 13lb., carbon fiber shelled seats. Everything we've read about them indicates that the quality is actually pretty good. If that's true...they're pretty much a steal.

But I'm even cheaper than that, so it'll probably be Sparco Sprints for me. :)

Anybody on here (Simon and Andrew) got non-stock seats in their cars?

As for the non-FIA approved part, it seems that's mainly got to do with the material not being up to the flame retardant race specs... if you put your car on fire on the streets I think you have some other issues with the driver mod.

I'm betting the stock seats would light up pretty quick too, so at least non-FIA approved probably isn't a step backwards in this case. :P

Those look like awesome seats. How much do the stock seats weigh? I'd be curious about how many pounds are lost by switching. Isn't there a limit though in CSP for how light your seat can be?

yeah, CSP has a 20 lb minimum.

That's the one annoying thing about the SCCA if you're a car guy. You've got to balance your desire to modify the car versus what class you'd have half a chance in.

Funny. The aftermarket seats are pure torture devices to me. (although quite useful in competition) The early OEM seats (90-93) I find to be fairly comfortable. 99,00 seats suck balls though.

Not really. It's just a matter of what's more important. Do you do it for the competition, or do you do it because you enjoy working on and driving your car. If it's the latter, run A Mod and f*** the classes. If you care about being the best driver you can be, and competing against the best, well, start worrying about classes ;)

I'm one of those have your cake and eat it too types, I guess. I think that's pretty common though, wishing there was a class that allowed EXACTLY what you wanted to do and nothing else. Like the butterfly brace or the new front subframe Flyin' Miata is selling. But to Roadster, in an attempt to be on topic, I hear that the '01+ seats are much nicer if you wanted to try a cheap fix.

Keep in mind Steve's no tall fella ;) Depending on the seat, you could probably use stock rails.
