View Full Version : Nickt93's New Daily Driver - Lexus IS300 LS3 T56 - 459hp/425tq

As many of you know, this week I picked up a new daily driver - a Lexus IS300 with an LS3 Chevy V8 stuffed under the hood. I found the car on Atlanta craigslist while searching for an LSX RX7. Despite the fact that it wasn't exactly what I was looking for, now that I've had it for a few days I'm realizing that I would much rather have this car than a LSX RX7 - it's more unique, more practical, and very well built.

The car put down 459hp/ 425tq on the dyno, but has since had some changes to the exhaust (addition of cats and resonators) and a swap back to the stock cam, so power is probably closer to 400hp currently. The aftermarket cam and open X pipe exhaust came with the car, though, so I can swap them out if I'm looking for more power somewhere down the line.

Now for some pics!

So, what's next for the car? Here's my "to do" list:

- New wheels and tires. The previous owner had 275 drag radials mounted on ASA AR1s. Right now the car has some 235 Dunlops - not quite enough section width.
- Have the open X pipe exhaust flanged so that it can be swapped out with the current setup that has cats and resonators.
- New stereo; shopping for a nice double DIN head unit with iPod control right now.
- Front end respray - there are quite a few chips on the hood and fenders that I'd like to fix.

The thread title says "drier." tehe!

I'm glad you are putting new wheels and tires. While it may look like an ultimate sleeper with stockers, I think more meat is always a good thing.

I doubt you will, but are you gonna miss the ls430? I only ask because I love those cars, and would love to pick up even an LS400 for a second car/daily.

Congrats, I want a ride!

I'm going to miss the LS430 like CRAZY! It is one of the best cars I've ever owned. Those cars' reliability is equalled only by their comfort. I (obviously) have a hard time saying goodbye to cars, but this one was especially difficult. I have found some therapy that makes it a little easier - turning the key on the IS and listening to the deep sinister rumble of the exhuast. I'd recommend an LS to anyone as a daily - they are great cars.

God bless you Nick. If you werent such a nice cat I would have burgled you by now.

Seriously, I want a ride damnit. I wanted a ride in Thor but Rip had already parted it, I wanted a ride in Mike's car but the O2 sensor was banging against the driveshaft, I wanted a ride in Thunder but it won't act right. Please don't sell, trade, or otherwise dismantle this before I get up there.

Dude, you have no idea. His girlfriend looks just like number 13 on House, only maybe better looking. She hasn't even gotten sick of him in like 5 years. We all want to be Nick. Sure he'll say he's jealous, 'cause I have kids, or something nice like that. Screw that Nick, I have kids, they make you miserable, and poor. I'd be jealous of the IS300, but I never really fit that well into the IS300 Sportback I had a couple years ago, the seat went back far enough but the B pillar airbag was in front of my nose.

Awwww shucks, you guys are too nice! And it looks like you have discovered my secret - be an old dude with no kids! These days won't last forever though...eventually I'll give in too and the toys (not the Supra. Never the Supra) will have to go. For now though, I'm going to ride the "dual income no kids" wave!

Do you guys specialize in estimating how awesome something is? I'm confused.

I think he is referencing the front end respray I mentioned above.

Dr.Drew
06-13-2011, 04:33 PM
Don't just respray the front, do the whole damn thing. This car is too awesome to be gray (I know it's "silver" but let's be honest, silver is just a shiny gray). Paint it fire engine red! With day-glo orange flames on the side! Maybe even a naked lady mural on the hood! Or you could have a picture of yourself wrestling a tiger with a bear in a headlock!

Also, just checked your facebook Nick and you're older than I though. I put you somewhere around 29-30. But still not quite old enough to consider yourself an "old guy."

If there was ever a stripper name- beats Porsche and Mercedes hands down. I checked out the specs on the 335i and it is amazingly quick. It's not that much slower than the v8 M3 and rumor has it that the 300hp rating is way underestimated. Of course it weighs a quarter ton more and has at least 100hp less than Corvexus.

Scary:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7zy-th2pTuM/Th77pQITWhI/AAAAAAAAD_s/UpjUTvvqMnI/s800/photo.JPG

Losing three wheel studs at 70mph on a congested stretch of I-85 is no fun! Especially when you've got three people you love dearly in the car. Could have been the end of nickt93! ARP wheel studs will be on order shortly.

As much as I'd like to think my car is too powerful for wheel studs, I don't think that's what did it. I never checked the lug nut torque after picking up the car, and I think they may not have been as tight as they should have been, working themselves looser over time. Eventually they loosened too much, allowed the wheel to wobble which snapped the three studs in the process.

I was headed to ATL and a silver IS went by in the oncoming lane and then the exhaust note...doh! I didn't see any other v8s so I assumed it could only be the IS. Sportcross is just a rare car to come across. We looked at one way back and went with the SUV in consideration of the kids.

Only two of the wheels are finished in snakeskin. I'm thinking about wrapping the other two (oh yeah, Ben - they are a vinyl wrap) in leather or naugahyde...or maybe a burled walnut (it is a Lexus after all). Or I'll just paint 'em all black. These are track only wheels, so it's an opportunity to do something...different.

It's not for me - it's for the car. Every time I drive it it asks me to take it somewhere where it can stretch its legs a bit :) Try as I might, I haven't been able to use more than 70% of this car's potential on the street.

I just did a mtn run sunday morning. It was awesome. Not awesome that I had to feather the throttle and stay in 5th and 6th through the twisties for fear of my life (it was 50 deg and there wasn't a chance tires would warm up). I'm definitely down for a spirited mountain cruise - just let me know when! I'm not really the white-knuckled, tail out, driving at 9/10ths on public road type though, so I probably won't be setting any lap records ;) Driving crazy on the street never really has been my thing - Atlanta roads are scary enough even just going with the flow of traffic.

On the track, though, that's a different story! I've got a set of track wheels and V710s for the car now, and once I fix a few odds and ends the car will be ready for some occasional track duty.

Speaking of fixes, the car is with Jason at Enthuza right now getting some exhaust work done. The previous owner hacked up the beautiful exhaust that was originally on the car - a dual 3" X pipe setup - and instead went with a non X-piped dual setup with cats/resonators. I'll have both sections flanged so that I can swap them in and out as needed.

Totally agree with you. The street is not the place to push it, much less mountain roads. I'm talking an easy cruise enjoying the color change.

Let's do it. Set a date for us to meet up and maybe some mx5atl'ers would like to join us :)

Yesterday I had my first real chance to enjoy this car - I went to Little Talladega for JZilla's track day. I didn't think the car was going to be ready in time, but I worked on the car all day Sunday and got everything in order (new control arms, cleaned up some wiring in the wheel wells (from the wire tuck) that I thought could come into contact with the wheels under suspension compression, etc.

I really didn't want to push it too hard - this was supposed to just be an opportunity to shake down the car and find any weak points that might need some attention in the near future. I did find one - more on that later - but it was no big deal.

My restraint only lasted about halfway through the first session. I started off at about 7 or 8 tenths, but after a few laps I got really comfortable. Coming from a Miata I expected this car to feel a bit on the heavy side. While it's not as nimble as the Miata, it was surprising how well this car hooks up. I started the day on a new set of Kumho Ecsta MXs, but then switched to V710s. The V710s definitely had more grip, but the car felt really good on both.

I only had a chance to upload one clip last night:

And another one from outside the car

The car ran great all day - the power steering got a bit hot, so I'll probably add a cooler at some point. On my last run of the day, the accessory belt sheared off, leaving me without a few critical things: power steering, water pump, alternator, etc. Luckily I was able to salvage a chunk of it that had the part number and make a quick run to O'Reilly's to get a replacement. Not a bad job - only took about 5 minutes to get it on. Huge thanks to Casey Foster for letting me borrow his truck to run to the parts store, and to VitaminD and JZilla's friend Brian for helping me put it on, and to JZilla for hanging out while I got packed up!

awesome car. Sounds awesome too. When he cranks it on, he already wins.

I think the sound is the best part. It's the kind of sound that makes you commit poor driving choices for the sake of awesome.

i wish i had enough cool points to hang out with you guys :(LOL the only cool points is an interest in cars. :D

I have a membership at atlanta motorsports park which should open by the end of this year or early next - I'll have 120 days of access to the track every year so if we pull together a meet up we should do it there :) I'll drive everyone who shows up around the track too :) If you don't drive it's free to ride along. If you do drive it's 250 for the day and you can only do it twice a year with a member sponsoring. :p

Nick...your car sounds absolutely awesome when you step into it. God I shoulda had a V8!

4-7's...is this the one they are building up here in Dawsonville? I haven't been out to that one yet which is a crime because it's in my backyard. I live even closer to that than I do to Road Atlanta & Road Atlanta isn't all that far from me. I hear the same folks that do the Safety Team duties @ Road Atlanta will be doing it for this track...if so, THAT'S ME! I will definitely pick some days @ the new track & watch all you crazy mofo's circle the track. Hopefully no one will need me...if you ever need a firefighter/paramedic it's a bad day. I'd love to run my car too...but it may not be ready until...well...forever. :(

On another note...we never did set up that mountain run. I don't have a car up to the challenge since the miata is outta commision but if we schedule it on a day when I'm off I'm game as all get out to join on my bike. I have heated gear so if it's a little chilly I can handle it. Salt on the ground...not so much...so it may need to be soon. Besides...I'd love to see these cars you guys have up close & personel & meet the owners, of course.

I got the car weighed - 3374 with a full tank of gas, no driver.

That also includes a massive 6 channel PPI amp ;) 10" sub was out of the car though.
